      Love how this take is so completely inaccurate. Same way the media tried to make the new mail-in ballots for this election to being interchangeable with absentee ballots. Same way they don't distinguish between legal and illegal votes. Same way they consider illegal immigrants and legal immigrants as a unit to use for arguments on immigration.
      This one is completely misleading too because the take is LEGAL votes. Bot of the arguments are for the same purpose. "STpop the count" was to wait until they are validated, and the other is to count legal votes.
      MSM twisted the meaning into something else, and it's not making me optimistic that enough people have learned to find reputable news, and not opinion analysis, or complete disregard for facts as truth by twisting the context enough to create a completely different meaning.

      That's what I found the funniest about the "Count the Vote"/"Stop the Count/Steal" thing. Sure, "Stop the Count/Steal" is grossly undemocratic, but it's said by people who are just mad their candidate isn't doing that well. Anyone who has cheered on a losing sports team knows the pain of being ahead only to lose once the game reaches its end. But "Count the Vote" -- like, they are? That's why it's taking so long to finalize the results, and the reason the numbers are always changing?
      I just was hoping someone inside the buildings would open a window and yell out to them that they, indeed, ARE counting the votes. Then a massive cheer would arise from the largely maskless crowd, and they would all go home and stop spreading COVID and ignorance. One can dream, I suppose.

    The Deposition Effect: the Stockholm Syndrome's less abusive sibling.

    • @FreeScience
      @FreeScience 4 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      I guess it's the effect of being in a stressful situation and you (and possibly other participants) depend on the other to resolve the problem, so you can get out of the situation. This makes you feel "one" with them, even if you don't actually have the same optimal outcome. But I'm sure some people are immune to that effect and "cause trouble" even if it's not in their best interest, as their disposition towards other is that they are either idiots and wrong, or want to take advantage of you.
      I think it's a pretty healthy mechanism and it's certainly lacking in society in digital domains.

      I think an even more distant related mechanism is the unwillingness to, first accept that you made a bad decision, then admit it to others. It's related in the sense that if you are in a situation with others you have in some way "decided" to be in it, even if your choice was forced by the circumstance you likely feel better to tell yourself that it's your choice.

    “The polls” is a general statement. The national poll averages nailed Biden’s popular vote of 51% and only underestimated Trump by 1-2% (which is still pretty good for polls). State level polling in MN, NV, AZ, GA, VA, CO, NH were spot on. PA was off by about 3%, which really isn’t bad for polls. The worst poll misses were in ME, IA, and WI (off by 11%, 7% and 7% respectively) while FL, MI, OH, and TX weren’t the worst, but still off a good 5%. It was kind of a mixed bag with polling this year. Down ballot races had worse polling misses than the top of the ticket, but the outcome was still within distribution ranges of probability models.

    • @ericslavich4297
      @ericslavich4297 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Also, in fairness to the polls, you need to wait for votes to be counted before you solidify your opinion on how well they did. Even over the last two days, 200,000 additional ballots were counted and Biden's lead grew very slightly. By now, the national polling error is arguably in the same range as it was in 2016 (the video says 5%). 538's national polling average had Biden up by 8.4% on November 3. Biden is currently sitting at +3.9% in the nationwide vote count (51.1% to 47.2%), which gives a polling error of 4.5%.

    Polls weren’t actually that far off this year. Biden handily beat Trump in both electoral votes and the popular vote. The only reason that vote even feels close is because of the unusual delay in tabulating all the mail in ballots this year which, unlike most years, were a significant percentage of the votes in the key swing states. They also predicted a close Senate race and, indeed, we have a situation where a Georgia runnoff is going to decide who controls the Senate.
    Also think of it this way, in any other election where an incumbent president lost by millions of votes and their opponent got over 300 electorsl votes it would be considered a pretty massive loss because of the advantages incumbents normally have in elections. The fact that we’re collectively astonished Trump didn’t lose by even more is really an affirmation of just how truly terrible Trump is as a president and a human being.

    • @TerryTerius
      @TerryTerius 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a mixed bag. Some states drastically overstated or understated support for one party/candidate versus the other, some were much closer to the final result. In Ohio and Wisconsin for example, Trump outperformed his polling numbers well beyond the margin of error. Some of the Senate races were equally off, look at SC, and Republicans swept house races that should have been more competitive.
      So yes, the final result in the House and the presidency may have been the overall expected outcome, but the polls were still pretty misleading. I just can’t interpret what happened as a thorough repudiation of him, and the Republicans were not punished for enabling and supporting his behavior for four years. Granted, the only reason the presidential race appears so close is because of the electoral college.

    • @Bodyknock
      @Bodyknock 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Robert Hunt Psst - no they didn't. Democrats won the Presidency and gained one seat so far in the Senate and still control the House. And if the Senate runoffs in Georgia go badly for the Republicans the Dems will control that too.

Weird that the Democrats would give themselves 14 million more fake votes this year but also give Trump 11 million. And why only put all those fake votes in less important places than, say, Florida or Texas that both threatened to swing this year and win by a larger margin? And if there really are 3 million fake votes getting tossed around, why not stick them in tight races like North Carolina? To be fair to fivethirtyeight, they give a range of possibilities, and while Trump certainly beat their average (again), to say nothing of the House and Senate, his win wasn't entirely outside the range of what they deemed possible. Also, while the swing states tended to lean further Right than they predicted (both the ones Biden won and those he didn't), the only state to go to Trump when they had it leaning Biden was Florida (which would have been much closer if not for the voter suppression). They also got Georgia almost perfectly right (IIRC, they had it as very slightly leans Democrat going into election day).
