My cat has officially taken up the role of the 'Feline Gargoyle' in our household. Every day, without fail, he climbs to the top of my bookshelf and stares at me with a look that says, 'I've seen things, human. Things you wouldn't believe. And I will fail to use my litter box again and again and...."

Oh god! At least they’ve been good about the litter box… except poor Charlie. I’ve had the clean up a little 💩 stuck to his leg a few times 😆

Have you considered the Women's Prize for Fiction? Piranesi won that award and some other recent winners include Demon Copperhead, The Book of Form and Emptiness, and Hamnet. It is different from the hugo/nebula awards in that it is definitely more literary that SFF but SFF books do make the cut! It is one of my favourite awards to follow and I feel like the books are (almost) always great!

  • @scarlettesc

I suggest you do a choice awards for the decade! For example, you read the nebula nominees/winners from 2010 to 2020 and choose your top picks

I love the idea of Nebula/Hugo themed reading vlogs! Mostly because they do usually include some of my favorite books of the year.
I also want to recommend The Blighted Stars by Megan O’Keefe, I definitely think this is a Sci-Fi you would enjoy!
Also I LOVED the world building in Master of Djinn. That was such a fun read!

There is also the Arthur C Clarke Award which is very unique because the nominated/winner authors aren’t always from USA & the sci-fi pros are really creative 😃 Herve Le Tellier, Kazuo Ishiguro and China Mieville were nominees 👽🛸

That 'no award' year was when a reactionary group called the 'sad puppies' worked with a right wing website to nominate a slate of works on the ballot because they were unhappy with the trend of work being nominated/awarded by Hugo voters which they considered too focused on progressive issues and/or too literary. (Not all the authors in the slate were aware they were being lumped in with the group, and several of them don't suck as humans afaict.) The actual Hugo voters responded by selecting 'no award' as preferable to anything on the slate (novel list gets the most nominations, and thus is hardest to game, 3 of the 5 nominees were 'legit' and you might consider skipping the other two within your challenge) . And then the Hugo rules were changed in subsequent years to make it somewhat more challenging for one group to game the system like that.
I do find the Nebula award (voted by authors) and the Hugo award (voted by sf convention fans/goers) to have interesting overlaps and disagreements on what is best. In both cases, there are personality things happening (e.g. imo Mira Grant getting the nomination for Parasite because she didn't win for Feed) and timeline things happening (Song for a New Day is very much a 2020 book, impressive partially because it was obviously written before then). And of course some authors being nominated/winning for the awareness of their body of work rather than that particular piece (e.g. the later Willis novels imo).

The 2004 winner, Paladin of Souls, is so good. I would recommend it. Also, I haven't read Blackout/All Clear, but I have read other books in the same series (I think every entry in the series won the Hugo in its respective year) and I have enjoyed all that I've read. Fire Watch won the best novelette Hugo and Nebula and is a nice short introduction to the series.

I love the Hugos. A ton of these books are on my TBR - Nettle & Bone, A Master of Djinn, Six Wakes, Piranesi, Goblin Emperor, and A Hundred Thousand Kingdoms to name a few. I liked Old Man’s War (Scalzi) - there’s a fun, brain-related piece of technology in that book that I desperately want. (I’ll keep it vague!!) I didn’t like the Kaiju book. I loved how it started but the second half was like watery tea. I liked Parasite by Mira Grant but not nearly as much as her other book, Into the Drowning Deep. Clawdia kills me. I loved that epic leap onto the higher shelf!

Among Others is a witchy story, you might enjoy it although it's not my favorite I've read from this author. She has one with the one life - two timelines trope (My Real Children) that I always think about whenever you talk about loving those kind of book. I've also read a standalone cozy fantasy by her which is pretty awesome too (Lifelode). I've heard good things about her series, but her books are so hard to find.

I get it why you didn't continue with the Expanse but I'm so sad though. It's my favorite scifi series of all time. I've read it all last summer. And it's amazing. I think you'd love Holden, his character arc is soooo good. The detective - he's built to be noir, it's outdated yes, but ... I mean, I still liked it, but I can see how not everyone would. However the rest of the characters are super awesome. ;/

Have you ever looked at the book club selections by Jenna Bush? (Read with Jenna) Or all the sub-categories for the Edgar Awards for mysteries? Or Pen awards (Canada for instance)? Have any of their winners appealed to you. Another booktuber suggested analyzing what books we liked as children, write the top 10 down, write out what that was which drew us to them. It helped me to stop buying books that would never appeal to me. And I would only buy paperback books to see if I agreed with the person or organization that recommended those books. This way I could see if I could trust those recommendations. Also, do you have book recommendations that you wish your subscribers would read about Canada?
