@@chadmullins7553 Hi, Chad! One thing we videomakers need to always keep in mind is that currently, about 2/3 of people using the internet - including TH-cam - do so on a mobile device, and about 85% of those on a phone. TINY screens! I view videos on a 27" monitor, but it is impossible for the human eye to distinguish between HD and 4k on any screen smaller than 50". That being said, and to answer your first question, yes, I do think it would enhance your videos if you would zoom in closer on the menu selections. Partly, this is because (sadly) DaVinci has no way to use a "light mode" skin, and their default interface of grey font on black is very low-contrast quite difficult to distinguish - unless significantly zoomed. By the way, I thought you did a quite good job of narrating clicks and keystrokes. It is frustrating how many tutorial videos I've seen where the videomaker says, "And then you click here..." and does so in a half a second on a small item on a non-zoomed screen. Grrr. Thanks for NOT doing that! 😄
Chad, Thanks for the video. I also recently found the Smooth Cut transition but didn't even think about adjusting it with the inspector. Thanks for the tip. Ahhh that is my favorite transition. It is a 3D lines transition that I downloaded from Envato Elements. If you have Envato, you can look up Psychedelic Transitions 3D
In my current tutorials, I am using Magic Zoom from MrAlexTech. However, this was an older tutorial, so that was probably from a free pack that William Justices made.
Thanks for the good tutorial! Would have been nice to see your finessing the cuts, because there's a big difference in the clip in the beginning and in the part where you apply the smooth cut. While your intro very much looks like one clips, the demo after applying the "smoothest cuts" preset still had some very obvious blur/cross disolve kind of feeling. Would've been interesting to learn how you got rid of that! :)
Totally understand! However, it would really make the tutorial longer and boring if I do that. I will be doing livestreams and things in the future where I can spend more time to do such things and answer questions while doing them. So maybe keep an eye out for that if you need the visuals... When it came to finessing it, all I really did was cut a couple frames off here and there until it mashed the way I would like it to. If you have any questions about things, feel free to ask them. Or if you have something you would like to learn, you can leave that comment as well. This is still a small channel, so I am learning about the viewers and what they really want/need to learn to work on.
@@chadmullins7553 Thanks for your quick answer! I understand that you want to keep the video as concise as possible, but to me it feels like the most important step of the thing that you wanted to teach us is actually missing from the tutorial :D If it's just a matter of shifting the frames around a bit, then that sounds reasonably easy. But I still feel that this info should have been part of the tutorial. Maybe you wouldn't have needed to show the full process for all clips, but just give a short overview for one? Just an idea, of course.

I will be doing a video about it in a couple of weeks I think. It was your comments that helped me get looking into it and finding a way to perfect it. Thanks!
Very cool. Looking forward to it. I have tools to fix audio. The problem with the video I was referencing was a Livestream so it was pointless to even try to scrub it. Bottom line is get proper levels in pre production, set your mics with proper headroom, no peak levels. In post use the EQ, use a compressor and on your main out use limiter set to a -1 and you should never have an issue with TH-cam lowering your levels. There are some settings that need to be done in Davinci as well. Setting to -14 luff's, using BS. 1770-4 meters, locking meter, using absolute scale. There are multiple things that need to be set (which can be set as a present once you do it) and your audio will be clean. If you listen to my episodes where it's just me talking my audio is clean. Livestream is a different animal.
You couldn't have picked a better time to switch! Resolve has only gotten better. During your transition, what were some of the highlights about DVR that helped you?
There are so many things I like better with DVR, but my top 3 would be; 1. The inclusion of the options tab below the timeline. So easy to isolate a clip and jump over to fusion and add/make transform elements, animations, intro & outro effects, etc. 2. I like DBR's Inspector over PP's element options. With PP you have to so many plug-ins from the media basket just to do half the things found in Inspector. 3. DVR came included with all kinds of simple drag and drop transitions. I've been with PP since the old CS1-6 days and would have to create my own transitions. It wasn't until CS6 that I learned a way to save the elements of the created transitions so I wouldn't have to create them every time. These are just the top of my list and daily I'm finding the list growing more and more. Thanks to my surprise enjoyment of DVR, I'm even considering giving Affinity Photo and Design a try since they're considered alternatives to PS and Illustrator. May jump completely from the Adobe train.
@@jemperor642 Wow! That is really an awesome breakdown! I didn't use PP so much, but I can completely understand and relate to the features. I switched from FCP...
Hey! Thank you! Really appreciate that feedback. I have since made a lot of adjustments on the Audio and should have it corrected for all uploads moving forward.
You’re welcome! Thank you for commenting! Feel free to ask anything or make suggestions for content you would like to learn. I am creating more about the edit page over the next couple of weeks
Thats a very good question... It would depend on the scene and the feel you want when making transitions for gaming as to which transition you should apply. The smooth cut is for 2 similar scenes to transition seamlessly. With gaming, that might get confusing if you are in a new location. Instead of the smoothest cut, you might want to try a fade or something like that.
I am really happy to hear that! I hope to create more useful things for everyone soon. What are some of the things you are interested in learning with video editing with DaVinci Resolve?

I would love to see a video on the mouse edit setup, that would save me a bunch of time. Right now I have my Stream Deck setup for editing with Resolve and that has saved me a bunch of time but adding in the mouse edit would be golden!
Hey! Thanks for the awesome feedback, it is much appreciated! There have been several people asking about editing faster and the mouse, so I will plan on making a video regarding that very soon.
so what kind of editing are you doing? Talking head? Podcast?
i second this mouse setup
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead I am planning to make my next video about how to cut a video faster and which mouse I use as well as which basic mouse is useful in DaVinci Resolve
thank you!
Happy it helps you!
nice one, thank you!
can you please say what mouse you are using?
Oh yes, I use the Logitech MX master 3s for Mac. I will be making a video about it soon and how to use it properly in DaVinci resolve to speed up the editing process.
I didn't know about that smooth cut transition in DR. What is the transition you use sort of scan lines? I love it!
Ahhh that is my favorite transition. It is a 3D lines transition that I downloaded from Envato Elements. If you have Envato, you can look up Psychedelic Transitions 3D
@@chadmullins7553 Cheers m8!
Sorry, how did you do that highlight in 1:59?
In my current tutorials, I am using Magic Zoom from MrAlexTech. However, this was an older tutorial, so that was probably from a free pack that William Justices made.
Even the mistakes can be used artistically
haha yes, they can. I was trying to be as dramatic as possible, but even then some of it was smoothed out pretty well haha
I understand that you want to keep the video as concise as possible, but to me it feels like the most important step of the thing that you wanted to teach us is actually missing from the tutorial :D
If it's just a matter of shifting the frames around a bit, then that sounds reasonably easy. But I still feel that this info should have been part of the tutorial. Maybe you wouldn't have needed to show the full process for all clips, but just give a short overview for one? Just an idea, of course.
@@MrFair I appreciate the feedback of what you would expect from a tutorial... I can try to do better with them in the future. For now though, it will take some time to be able to get back into another video that will have transitions as I have so many requests for certain types of videos. I can not get another one out very fast about this just yet. I just want you to understand the timing a bit.
@@chadmullins7553 No worries, I don't expect you to make another tutorial. Just wanted to give you honest feedback, since it seemed like you'd be interested in that, what your comments also tell me you are :) Good luck with your channel, by the way!
@@MrFair Yes, of course! Everything I can learn from the viewer is extremely important, so I am trying to be as engaging as possible and being sure to put the viewer first. I can not help others if I do not listen to them. =)
How do I get my old layout back just like yours my layout now looks like complete shit since they updated like idk how to fix it I had everything perfect
I'm sorry you are having trouble... You would like for it to look like mine?
When in DaVinci resolve, go up to "Workspace" go down to "Reset UI Layout"
That will then set it to the default layout.
Please let me know if this helps.
Hey Chad. Please say where you find this beautiful transition that you are used in very beginning at 0:09 ? Can you are share it to me and another you'rs a viewers ?
Haha this is my favorite transition from Envato Elements. It is the 3D lines you can find it by searching Psychedelic Transitions 3D in Envato Elements website.

Great tip! Thanks fir teaching it. it’s going to help me a lot.
Awesome to hear that! What kind of videos are you making? Talking head?
@@chadmullins7553 yes exactly- I am a newbie and probably should get a video editor (not sure it is great use of my time) , but it is so much fun and satisfying. One of my main problems was those jump cuts, but could you make a video on how to adjust the length of the clips without wrecking the whole timeline. I have work arounds but they are so inefficient and I mess it up and often have to start again . I know there are lots of people who are just starting out who need basic skills to get going before they invest in a complicated course.
@@designinkco Thanks for the feedback! And to answer your question, it is a big YES! I am in the process of making a couple of videos to help exactly what you are asking for.
Most people have asked about editing with the mouse I use, which really is awesome with editing, especially for those issues you have. I will also be doing a video specifically about the features of cutting in DaVinci resolve with whatever tools you already have as that is the 2nd most requested video.
It is actually a lot easier to do than you realize, but making rookie mistakes happens often... We will figure it out and you will be able to edit smooth very soon!
@@chadmullins7553 Thank you - I feel like it should be simple - maybe it is but I'm still messing it up...looking forward to watching more of your videos and learning
They are simple, but only when you become used to it. The next two videos I release should clarify a lot of your questions and help you create a system or process that you would use in n your everyday workflow.
Thanks man!👍

Very well done and helpful.Thank you.

Yes, this should be good even as far back as 17 I think.

smooth cut my work time in half! 💪
really, just using this transition sped up your workflow that much? Thats awesome!
How long do you usually spend on a video?
@@chadmullins7553 *sorry* I thought you were going to explain the mouse deletion trick 😅 that keybind explanation would have, the smooth cut did make for cleaner dialogue though!
I will say a lot of my clients are not trained for the camera, and do a lot of movement and readjusting while they speak so we'll see how smooth it will look
@@_mattcreates_ oh I see. There is a video for that mouse specifically. Also covers keyboard shortcuts. And you can still use the smooth cuts with some movement, but it will be seen quite a bit. However might be fluid

What transitions do you prefer in your videos? Have you used the smooth cut before?
really interesting I dabble in Davinci still learning.
Happy to hear it has interested you. What brought you to DaVinci Resolve?
@@chadmullins7553 Long story - friend got sick with the thing that was going around called me and ask me to learn Sony Vega Pro 17, and how to stream, I have tried them all and discovered DaVinci Resolve by accident due the FF feature, have the paid version and love it !
Dropped a sub. This content is of high value. Keep it up
Thank you for the awesome feedback! It is very much appreciated! Which page are you learning about the most in DaVinci Resolve?
@chadmullins7553 Edit page my home lol. I actually want to learn how to put 3d text in like floating text . But no tutorial seems streamline for me. Like the intro to a faze montage
@@ChaosGamingSA That sounds pretty cool... I have done some 3D animations with text, but it does take some time for a tutorial like that. I will definitely put it on the list, but its going to take some time for me to make it as an easy tutorial to follow.
@chadmullins7553 perfect and good luck. I think a video like that would do well. It's a topic that I feel isn't covered nicely but I know it's technical
@@ChaosGamingSA I hear you... DaVinci Resolve is probably not the best in 3D space... I have been trying to work with it recently, but certain features are not as user friendly as most other 3D rendering things. I think Blender might actually be your best bet to make such things. Would be easier, faster and probably have high quality tutorials on it.
How can i make jump cuts automatically? It's hard when i record long videos. Thanks.
You mean to make cuts automatically so you don't have to manually edit it? There is no free version of that. However, Auto-Cut is now available for DaVinci resolve, so if you do not mind paying something, you can get that done easily with them.
@ the only way is buying full version, right? Thank you.
@@JonasBrave Sorry, I must have made it confusing... What I meant was the only way is to purchase a third party plugin. the one called "Autocut" is the plugin that would work with it. I am currently in process of creating a collaboration with them and will be doing some videos about it soon.
@ thanks for answering 🙋♂️
@@JonasBrave No problem! Feel free to ask anything anytime
Wow this is HUGE for me as I do a lot of talking head stuff. Had no idea!
Yes, this is perfect for talking head videos! Jumpsuits are the main cuts we make with the Talking head vids.
What else do you need to improve for your talking head stuff? Working on motion graphics or anything?
@@chadmullins7553 Honestly motion graphics. I have no clue. I have heard it talked about but I really dont know much about it. I know how to use the transform tools and very little fusion stuff but I get by. I dont think my videos are half bad.
@@tattoosinreview Awesome! I will be doing some motion graphics videos coming up soon. I will take a look over your channel soon when I get a chance and check your videos out too!
Hey man! Hows it going? I couldn't remember where you commented about the audio being messed up, but I figured some stuff out in DaVinci Resolve and I have perfect audio for TH-cam now.
Just started using Resovle about a month ago, after years of using Premiere Pro... I'm so mad at myself for waiting so long to make the switch.
You couldn't have picked a better time to switch! Resolve has only gotten better. During your transition, what were some of the highlights about DVR that helped you?
There are so many things I like better with DVR, but my top 3 would be;

You’re welcome! Thank you for commenting! Feel free to ask anything or make suggestions for content you would like to learn. I am creating more about the edit page over the next couple of weeks
How to do this for gaming videos? 🤔
@@chadmullins7553 thank you ‼️
