Just watched your great DME arc approach tonight, 26 Jan 23. You asked the audience when the last time they did a DME arc. I am proud to say that I did one yesterday on a Red Bird simulator as part of my IFR currency work. Very glad I keep up both my DME arc and NDB skills. They really knock the rust off the rusty pilot. Love your videos. Terry
MzeroA....thank you for your support through your videos... I believe that it gives me the support to be a safer and more convenient pilot. Today I only have 100 hours in the air. To know how to fly IFR will help me feel better flying VFR. I'm a swedish pilot who really appreciate your videos. Thank you....... / Pilot Berg...
I had flown the same approach first time 8 months back during my IFR checkride in Ocala and I passed. But you're method is also amazing......... Great video
Well done, Jason! I earned my instrument rating in 1990 and don’t recall ever doing a DME Arc approach. Going for my CFII check ride next month and this will definitely be part of the experience. Thanks for the help.
I just passed my PPL on Tuesday at my flight school and then had my first IR sim on Friday . Excited to learn instrument. This is another great video by Jason.
THURSDAY (December 10, 2020) On my IFR LONG CROSS COUNTRY flight, I flew this approach. I watched your video the night before. Great preview. My flight was KSRQ TO KISM (VOR APPROACH DME ARC circle to land) on to KOCF for The ILS (this approach and touch and go) back to KSRQ (RNAV APPROACH) and land. 300 miles, 3.5 hours. Cherokee 180 N3644R. Thanks for the good work the Mzero team does.
Absolutely fantastic. I love your teaching style. Using the videos really helps me know that I am understanding the stuff I am studying. Thank you so much!
Love it! I like to teach the WIRE checklist as a pre approach checklist Weather Instruments Radios Environment (brief the approach) then BCGUMPS on the approach (before landing checklist) and then at the FAF Time gear power tower lights flaps. Great videos keep it up!
I was taught MARTHA for pre-approach briefing: Missed, Atis, Radios (com/nav), Time, Heading inbound, Altitude mins. Was also taught to always be configured before FAF.
When did you record this video? At minute 14:30 you can hear a readback from N14814... Thats me in a Skyhawk from my flight school in Venice where I did my IR and hour building! 😍
@@bacu62 Back then we were flying IFR from KCGC to KVNC... if that makes more sense to you. Never heard of a flight school where you're only allowed to fly at your home base 😅
Hey man your video is super helpful. I’m working on my instrument rating now in school. I have a flight tonight. Doing a vor localizer and ndb in a piper archer with the g1000 out of kfpr. Lots to do all at once but so much fun.
Great video Jason! The level of detail is great to cement all of the key concepts and to re-validate the procedures we were taught during instrument training.
LOVE your videos. Especially this is in actual airplane (not in a sim). Would've been GREAT if the camera was focused on the instruments (especially heading indicator) that you are twisting so that the procedure is clear to understand. What if there was wind blowing you off course?
Great video, Jason. I liked the approach overlay. Close ups of your panel would be great, though I know it would be difficult to mount cameras there. QUESTION: You mentioned at the 14:19 mark that 5.9 miles was what you were going for next. Wouldn't that be 4.9 NM, the FAF? 5.9 is the IAF. Thanks for all of your great work.
Loved the video as I will be doing these in the next few months. We are bit more strict in my school, no gps and we wear an IFR cap thats restricts our eyes. Even so I will be watching this multiple times before my flights. Thanks.
Really good video.. always enjoy watching the content you put out. Maybe a little more explanation of why and how much your twisting the OBS on the VOR from radial to radial as you fly around the arc would have been good.
Yay I’m the first comment . Sir I love your content it’s fantastic . Honestly please don’t stop what your doing because it’s great and very useful info . Thank you for all the effort you put into your videos!
Thanks for the video, I am just learning about DME arc. What would have been super helpful for the video in my opinion is saying your heading vs your VOR you are tracking. I am still trying to not have them confused. Maybe a recap at the end of the video while on the ground could have even been great.
Excellent video and great training aid for new pilots, VFR or IFR. Talking to yourself helps eliminate mistakes on the ground and in the air! Keep threm coming! Safe flying.
You have some really good content but I think this one is a litte lacking in explaining what the DME ARC approach is. So is it flying an arc to an approach to land by keeping the radius of your turn the same amount of distance from the VOR as you intercept the approach to landing?
Question on this. I know GPS can be in lieu of DME, but what about when the plate specifically calls for "DME required". Can GPS still be used? and how would one be using the GPS for the approach, but at the same time, get the distance from the VOR (unless they have 2 GPS units, which 2nd gps can be set to the VOR as waypoint for distancing)
Nice video Jason. You and your business venture have sure come along way since I was a CFI at OCF while you were doing your initial training. Regarding DME arc's I used to get them all the time when flying into Mexico, even in radar environments. Of course the FMS and autopilot do all the work in that type of flying but it is still a bit of a curveball when you first get that assignment flying in there. They also have DME arc departures. Really weird.
Huh I didn't know that localizers were used for these arcs, unless when you tuned to it you were just meaning to put it into NAV1 or NAV2, but not currently using it. What do you use for live ADS-B on your iPad? I don't have iOS myself, an android user, but yeah. Just curious if you use flightradar24 or something.
Just got my instrument rating but I couldn't resist watching a video about something I already know pretty well! Nothing wrong with watching approaches from the safety of my computer chair!
The hangar manager of my dad's airplane is a 40 year commercial pilot. He said he never once had to fly a dme arc. So why are IR students being subjected to that?
Love your style. Great job Jason. Looking forward to getting your instrument ground training course. I haven't flown in...... Damn it's been a couple of decades.... Sure wish I had you as my instructor back then. Thank you very much.
This would drive me nuts flying with him [hamster effect] . We have these thoughts, but only annunicate the important points like DEVIATIONS, and set ups, established, way points and altitude checks otherwise monitoring the approach with our scans and accomplishing the checklist.
Great video. I flew my DME arc just fine on my check ride, but when given a hold off a VOR (the 030 radial) I drew it and wrote it and promptly dialed in the 300 radial. Didn't take long for the examiner (who was also being observed on MY check ride by the FAA) - I was a little nervous - to say, "I have the airplane." Shit, I busted my check ride! Humiliating! Oh, that wasn't the end of it. I busted another hold on the next ride. I then beat the hell out of my steering column on the ride home in my car I was so pissed. So after 10 more hours (my instructor was incredulous since I really had these down) I finally got the thing done. I was just psyched out! The same examiner busted me on my Commercial check ride. He told me on my spot landing, "see where the runways cross? that's your spot." No problem, oh unless there is some ambiguity on that instruction. Do you hear the ambiguity? That runway is 150 feet wide. Where's the spot? The edge of the runway? Which edge? Or the center of the runway? I didn't think anything of it and logically chose the center. I aimed and landed and He said "you missed your spot." I'm like "what?" He gave me another shot back at the home airport, but by then the winds were incredible that April morning and there was no way I was going to hit it doing nearly a max crosswind landing with no other option available. I went back a few days later, got behind the power curve intestinally and just banged his airplane down, but I was going to make sure it was within 50 feet. Hope the Cutlass gear was o.k.
Great Video Jason. I didn't see you actually reference the DME while flying the DME arc though. With my DME equipped airplane, I was taught to maintain the arc by being +.1/-.1 on the DME Arc distance. Wadda think?
Your flight instructor should be able to assist you, but if not, you would need to look at the procedure plates for all of the controlled airports in the area. Especially any of those close enough that your DPE may use during the checkride.
I also fly in the DFW area. I have found only 2. There may be more but I have not found them. One is at KSLR (Sulphur Springs). It is a VOR DME approach with an arc. The other is Longview (KGGG). It has an arc into an ILS. It is outside the DFW area though.
Thanks, Greg. That's great information. I'll make a point to try the DME arc in Sulphur Springs next time I'm flying...if I can find another decent IFR bird around KFTW. Is it just me or are they becoming harder to find these days?
Never say it in the video, are you performing Turn 10 Twist 10?? And you never discussed the 14 DME staying within 1 mile either side. Love your videos. Start Safe, Stay Safe
Love your videos, great instruction, but, if pilots were also auctioneers you would be the greatest! I 'tend' to avoid your videos because I have to listen SO HARD to grab the snippets of instruction relative to the subject of the video and tune out the horrendous amounts of other side comments (albeit instructional) you make non-stop w/out breathing! I do a lot of rewinding to grab sentences relative to the video subject, but I got it on this one, too. Thanks to you and all other instructors who preach "a pilot is always learning"! Safe landings always, my friend!
Not sure I understand the purpose of the video when all we get to see is the geo referenced plane on the approach plate. No explanation as to how you did it.
Great video. It would be nice if you showed the panel more rather than the pilot. It's more informative to watch the instruments rather than just staring at a pilot sitting there. But it was still very, very helpful! Thanks!

close up view of panel would be nice, as you make adjustments and reading distance.
Flew my first DME Arc today! I was all over the place! Gotta love IFR training!
Thank you Jason, your videos are very educational. It’s been 17 Years since my last flight, this week I’m getting back on the horse.

You won't be wearing that IFR cap solo .. that would be illegal and unwise.
i.b. hemp correct, that’s why it’s for lessons only.
thanks for doing this videos for free Jason, your videos are great
I need him as my flight instruction. I would learn so much more. He talks very clearly and has a great understanding of aviation.
About to take my IFR check ride, great brush up on this little used procedure. Thanks!
Good luck Jack!! Let me know how it goes!
You have a gift for teaching big J! Wish you could come instruct me here on the west coast. I think getting your ground videos will have to do.
Thanks for the positive feedback! Fly safe!
Really good video.. always enjoy watching the content you put out. Maybe a little more explanation of why and how much your twisting the OBS on the VOR from radial to radial as you fly around the arc would have been good.
Glad you had fun. But more technical would be better. When to turn. ? The twisting and turning concept etc.

Question - is anyone still flying DME arcs anymore? Are their airports that have a DME arc approach but no GPS approaches in the US?
Did you have DME in the panel, or just use the Ipad?
The hangar manager of my dad's airplane is a 40 year commercial pilot. He said he never once had to fly a dme arc. So why are IR students being subjected to that?
Your voice is only coming from the left channel. I recommend converting the intercom audio to mono to avoid that.
Great video though!

Awesome video
A suggestion, while talking show the gauges so we too know what to look for
Do you worry about using the word "for" when calling it altitudes to yourself? Example "I'm 900 for 280"?
I tried highlighting my approach plates. Now I can't get the highlight ink off my Ipad screen. What do I do?
Ha! Good one! Thanks for watching!
super helpful! thanks!
Why do you sit in the right seat?
I’m surprised you’re not wearing a hat and/or sunglasses! Looks like you were flying directly into the sun lol.

If I m correct the limits are +/- 2 NM. During checkride it is +/- 1 NM.
Wish I could see the instruments
How do I find out if one of these approaches exists in my area? I live in DFW.

Is it not offivially +/- 2 NM but the +/- 1 NM only for the checkride? Afaik, the +/- 2 NM give you 1,000 ft clearance above obstacles.

Not sure I understand the purpose of the video when all we get to see is the geo referenced plane on the approach plate. No explanation as to how you did it.
Why isn't he flying at the left hand seat?
Cause he is a CFI and they sit in the right seat.
