Amazing Japanese Retirement Home and Senior Living that You Will Want to Live in Now

- What kind of senior living community do your parents want to live in? How about you? Aging in place is the most popular answer these days but not always the most practical or feasible. Most nursing homes, assisted living facilities, retirement homes, retirement communities are too institutional - not a place where I would want to live out the rest of my years. There are community alternatives, cohousing options and intentional communities gaining popularity. In Kanazawa, Japan, I found one such village called Share Kanazawa. As we think about issues of continuing care, it is critical that we think not only of the practical aspects of a senior community but also of the emotional value a home brings to a person. This is what Share Kanazawa does so well. After watching this video, you may want to move there (or figure out how to build one wherever you live!)

I am almost 50 and becoming disabled. I love this concept and would live/retire here in a second. Can Americans live in the elderly or disabled sections?
I love the concept but i think she could do better. Early retirement is the key to a successful retirement.
That is true. I started investing in early retirement when I was 25 years old. I followed a simple strategy of saving 50% of my income and investing it in low-cost index funds. Now I enjoy traveling the world, pursuing my hobbies and spending time with my love once.
Got this information late. I think i have not been lucky with investment. trying to have balance. How do you go about yours?
I invested 60% of my portfolio in stocks and 40% in bonds, which gave me a balanced mix of growth and stability. I also diversified my investments across different sectors and regions. You should get some help.

What a lovely concept ! This is what is missing from many senior living resorts - that you have just the elderly all around, no youngsters. This model takes care of that! The elderly and the young - they both need each other.
It would have been nice if they'd shown the interiors of one of the residences where the seniors live.

We do have something similar to those living arrangements. Need to work on getting medical students, food service students, to live and work in the facilities for rent reduce, while they are going to school.
I am covered with goosebumps and feeling teary. I cannot state how strongly I love this concept. It's beautifully rendered. I am 60 and my friends and I often have conversations about what we'd like to see with regard to community living in our wisdom years. I am most definitely going to share this video with them. What a great idea to integrate and create opportunities for various age groups and backgrounds to connect and interact and support one another. It seems they're taking it back to how communities SHOULD BE instead of everyone living on their own and only taking care of themselves where they dont even know who their neighbors are. This is such a wonderful idea. It seems a bit quiet but I hope it blossoms as a community and that it becomes a positive example for similar communities around Japan and throughout the world. Thank you Kaoru! Yes, it was pretty quiet that day because it was cold outside and it was mid-afternoon. They really engage the local community as well by having lots of events which is really cool. Hopefully, this will be a model for more communities like this to pop in other parts of Japan and the world. :)
I know of an elder who resides part of the year at what was once called leisure world - a retirement community for 55 and older fit and lively people. I’ve heard of Vi village in Palo Alto that serves an active elder community. And I’ve heard of an organization called Green House Project that is a home based assisted living program that’s in about 25 states. These setups have a bent for either assisted living or active lifestyle clients - not integrated multineed communities that include children or the disabled and students and families focusing on symbiotic assistance within a micro community.Which to me seems far more engaging and emotionally stable.

This is lovely. It reminded me of a proposal from Sweden. Many years ago, there was a pilot program proposal to change the zoning of all of the apartment buildings in a city in Sweden. All of the ground floor apartments would be reserved for the elderly. All the floors above would be for families or single adults. The idea was for the residents in the building to stop by to visit the elderly on the ground floor- to ask if they needed anything from the supermarket and or to just visit and chat. The feeling was that this would be beneficial for all. Children on the upper floors would have some relationship with their elderly neighbors downstairs and all would gain a sense of shared community. It was also believed that this kind of model would diminish the loneliness and isolation for all. The idea was to challenge the tendency to segregate and silo the elderly- but to integrate them in and within the neighborhood and community. I suspect that legal and bureaucratic obstacles may have sabotaged the proposal.

I really like the concept and it's so well maintained. It's nothing like the typical old folks home that gives you a "waiting to die" depressing environment.
Why don't we do elder care like this here in the states? It's maddening. This makes so much sense for everybody who participates in/lives in the facility. There's still a great opportunity for private corporations to make a solid profit in this kind of setup. I feel like this could work here in New York with public/private stakeholders. This makes me want to live in Japan... Great video. This info is impossible to find. Thank you for giving this info to those of us whose lives are upended as we try to figure out how to care for our aging parents.
Perhaps it’s the disposability mindset of our society - elders aren’t easily seen as an integral resource capable of significant daily contribution.
I want to live there too.
Because the elderly generally have no value in our culture. Probably before long we will be euthanizing them.
I wish I was a young person, surrounded by all this elderly knowledge. I would take advantage of it. They've walked the path...I would be just starting. What they have to share would be PRICELESS.
Yup, it's every man for himself here in the USA. And if you mess up, and don't have enough money at the end of the road there's a nice tent you can get at Walmart, an option many more are doing now. Saves on rent.

Wow, i was so engaged and intrigued. I live in AZ and there is so much space to create a community like that. It is tragic we have the history we do for taking care of our Elderly. Our communities are ready for this type of arrangement bc the crisis exists.

I'm in the process of seeking a retirement community for my elderly mother, and I so wish I could help her settle into as engaging a community as the one profiled here. I love the multi-generational approach embraced by this community, and I wish there were a way to see more of that in action. Thank you for showing us an alternative path for assisted living.

This is absolutely phenomenal. Combining old & young, & keeping everyone engaged & involved as much as they can be in living fully is a boon to older people. Wondering what the population is of the community living there. Confusion re the cost. Can you clarify what he meant?
The cost depends on what size place you have and whether you are an elder, a student, or a person with special needs. But their food and other costs are subsidized by the government. :)

The culture in the US is very different from Asian countries that's why you can't see anything like this in the US.
Wished America would be more like that. I wished I was born in Japan.
Thank you for making this video, though I am seeing it only three years later. The idea of community living is phenomenal! It sounds so simple, yet most governments choose the easier option, that is, to isolate facilities for elderly, disabled, children & youth separately, and in the end, a much divided society. The kids need to see that they too will grow old one day, and can have much to learn from the elderly, not only experience, but also stories, it's a link to the past. The students can have a cheaper lodging in return to serve the older people. And for the elderly, the last thing they want is to be pushed to a corner where there is only old people around, everything becoming purely functional oriented, no dignity, no respect, and eventually forgotten...
This is really a great place and should serve as a an example for others to follow.
Probably when the video was made, it was only recently opened. I expect there is more vegetation now, and I would suggest to add a bit more seating in the outdoor areas where the elderly walk around so that they can take a break if needed to. Perhaps some of the steps can become ramps instead so that even those who are using wheelchairs can benefit from this wonderful environment.

This is an amazing concept. Quite well thought out. I was wondering about the extent of government involvement and costs - like how disproportionate is it compared to current models.

The financial market has tough one this past months, but I watch interview on CNBC where the anchor kept mentioning "...CATELYN MORRIS...". This prompted me to touch with her, and from October 2021 till now we have been working together, and I boast now of €15k in my trading wallet.
What kinds of investments do you make. I totally agree with you. I have a lump sum right now doing next to nothing in a savings account. but it's hard for me to take part in the market right now due to the fulltime nature of my job. it will be way to stressful to combine so I don't even think about-facing it

This concept is very nice. But in the USA it would cost an arm and a leg for someone to live in a community like that. Here you either have family who you live with and takes care of you, have a lot of money and go into a nice senior community, or go into an assisted living facility and live a horrible life. Those are the choices here in the USA.

Japan is a rich country! I understand that most of the population comprised of the elderly! What I don't understand is why is the subsidy from the government only 1.30 with the elderly paying 4.50? Wouldn't it be good if elderly contributes 1.30 and government subsidize 4.50? It would be better still if FOC for elderly especially for those single, without children or next of kin!

about $1500 / month for rent. As you can imagine, there is now a pretty long wait list to get an apartment there. They are using this as a model to build other similar communities in Japan.
All the Assisted Living facilities I visited while deciding on a place for my mother were not like this. All of them were just small apartments for the elderly to sit in until meal time. No stores, no animals, no where to take a walk safely. Just sit in your room.
I would move my mother to Share Kanazawa if it were here.

Elderly care here is atrocious ! If you windup in a state run home your death clock speeds up drastically. Unqualified incompetent people are hired. Care goes right out the window. Even if they’re good caregivers they’re not given the time needed to properly care for each patient. Even our hospitals are under staffed.
