  • While not ready to go right out of box, discussed in this review are some of the tasks you need to consider to make this inexpensive Tomahawk a viable tool. Given its price this is a great way to get into Tomahawks as well as presents a great modding opportunity.

    It is not just the steel that is good it is the heat treating that cold steel does that makes them great and hold a edge.

    As axe prices rise and rise I think these are a better and better value. So many people have made negative assumptions about these, I think they are now more than ever best bang for buck in a multi role pack friendly tool, and of course the best part is making the mods to make them yours !!!

    Looking great! Love CS hawks, I've modded several myself, also throw them all the time. They really are great.

    Buddy of mine got one. He brought it out on a hike and we had a little throwing competition on a dead standing tree. It was a lot of fun. We did end up breaking the handle though. But that was some major abuse we put on that thing. I will be getting one or two or five.

    • @GrottoGroveGroves
      @GrottoGroveGroves 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you take out that stupid allen screw you will break handles much less. a throwing hawk supposed to have a loose head. helps keep it from breaking from shock.

      It's fun certainly fun but would add a lot of practicality as well (although removes some power in the swing of course). I'm almost complete now with the shortened version and has turned out really good to this point.

    Use a wood file and sand paper to get a good fit, that's what I do with the tomahawks i use. Most tomahawks usually come all funky, but with a little work you can make it perfect.

    Have you tried the trail boss, more of a small axe than a tomahawk. I love mine, i took off the coating and stained the handle, cold blued the head. My head had circle wedges and came a little loose, after rehanging with a split wedge its rock solid. And i had to put a good edge on it. Sounds like alot of work, but they are fun to customize and i like the trailboss design. Shaved about 2" off the top of the handle when i rehung the head.

    Strip off the coating with a chemical bath. Few strokes with a hard brush. Get some gunmetal blue, apply it to the entire head. Really helps improve it. I'd sharpen it after the bluing and everything else was done to it.

    The hawk with the wedge in it, what did you do to the head? It looks significantly shinier than the one with the perma blue on it. It also looks a bit worn, like it has got a patina on it. Kinda new to this, so if you can explain what you did to it I would appreciate it. Thank you and continue doing what you are doing.

    • @Cr0cket20
      @Cr0cket20  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That one I just stripped the original black coating off. If I were to take that one out and use it, would have to really take care of the head because there is not a protective coating on it. The really dark blue hawk I left the blueing on there for much longer than suggested. That's why it's so dark. If you didn't want it as dark don't leave on as long.

      I cut a small wedge from a tree branch or any piece of wood you can find. That works great. It's in one of my tomahawk videos somewhere. Can't remember which one.

    I have to be honest, I used to be annoyed at the state of the axes they send.
    But after figuring out how to make them work nicely, I now buy them as blank slates to which I can grind and finish myself.
    I wish they actually sold both the head and haft without coatings so I don't have to undo shoddy work, though.
    For £40, the hard work is already done.
    My friends and I use them for throwing

  • @jelkel25
    @jelkel25 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I put knife oil on my CS Norsehawk and the black coating is flaking off. I don't know if it's my brand of oil or all oils but unless you never oil a carbon steel tomahawk don't count on the paint sticking around, you will be " modding" it to some extent.

    1055 is junk, but half the $ of 1095. Another advantage of 1055 is that it won't hold an edge at all so there's no point in ever sharpening it. 1055 is better than anything for the $& is excellent at splitting because it's not sharp at all. 1095 will stick every time, and it's impossible to extract 1095 from a log. Log splitters are supposed to be very dull like me. I'm self deficating. aero

    these hawks are trash, yea the heads are made of 1055, but its a product that comes unfinished. any company that puts a screw in the head to the handle is a joke, and by the time you fit the head to the handle you run out of handle.
