For all of Super's faults, after Ressurection F, any time Frieza is on screen it is just phenomenally fun. His boundless charisma just seeps into every scene.
Also, Frieza is evolving his methods. He is training to get power so he can keep power. That is literally unprecedented in Dragon Ball where villains are introduced and thrown away.
I think the episode where Gohan invites Future Trunks to have dinner with his family is actually important. It reminds Future Trunks of how good life could be and just how much they've lost. It must also be emotionally difficult to see this other version of his beloved dead mentor living a full rich life.
I thought the same, it's a bitter sweet moment where he recognizes thay Gohan is finally able to live the life he always wanted and it's such a drastic difference from the Gohan that trained him that he almost doesn't even recognize him anymore
Filler is supposed to seem important but in the grand scheme there's no difference in the rest of the plot if that has ever happened. It just does and never matters again
Lowkey the filler episodes in the Black/Zamasu saga were good scene setters. The future Trunks/Gohan episode actually made the stakes of the people in the future world seem much higher. Future Trunks thrives for the life that present Gohan has, as it’s one he used to have himself.
If I recall correctly, the Battle of Gods film, in one hour, managed to foreshadow Videl being pregnant, while Super, in nine episodes, just brings it up out of the blue when it’s relevant
Imo battle of the gods > than the show Resurrection f < than the show. Like it doesnt feel special at all. Battle of the gods has a reasion to be made. But rez f just seems stupid. Like they are trying to go for the nostalgia of the frezia arch but it just seems pointless. It's essentially the beginning the cell saga but it takes a bit longer.... The show does a better job at it because it FEELS like it was made for anime. Like it makes sense. It isnt worth it to be a film.
The spirit sword is such an anomoly to me. Like, they literally had the perfect explanation right there at the beginning of the arc. All they needed to do was say that while he was training for Buu with the Supreme Kai, he also trained with King Kai to learn his techniques as the Supreme Kai thought they'd come in handy against Babidi, Dabura, and Buu.
Or when trunks talked about how he stopped buu, goku could have shared how he defeated buu with a spirit bomb, explained the gist of it, and since trunks has never seen or performed the technique himself, the spirit sword is what he comes up with. Just any explanation would have been nice honestly lol
They could’ve saved the episode if they just gave the slightest hint that Goku trained Trunks in the past on how to use the spirit bomb and it pisses me off. It could’ve literally been a throw away line and the scene still wouldn’t be nearly as dumb as it is
They could've even tied it to some magic that was within the sword Tapion gave Trunks that granted him abilities after training/fighting for long enough with it. It's not that far removed a concept as the Z sword was supposed to do the same thing and everyone assumed it was legit meaning it is probably possible.
Buu _tries_ to be nice due to Mr. Satan’s influence, but he has lapses back into his toddler mindset from time to time. And he doesn’t have the intuition necessary to think that Beerus is anything other than a big, purple, talking cat.
@@Oknahidwin I don’t know if you guys know this, but saying that „well, this character acted the exact same way *over a decade ago“* isn’t as much of a slam dunk argument as you make it seem like it is. There is this neat little thing called „character progression“. Don’t know if you heard of it. Every single character in Super has been boiled down to their most basic traits. They are nothing but a shell of the characters they became by the end of Z. Yamcha is just a weak coward. Krillin is weak, and hyper-aware of it. Tien… basically doesn’t exist. He’s just a stoic, emotionless husk, getting dragged along for the ride. Piccolo is literally just there to serve as motivation for Gohan. Gohan is just repeating the exact same character arc he‘s undergone like 30 times by this point. Future Trunks is just „The depressed/hyper-serious guy“. Buu has regressed into being a petulant baby again. Goku is so goddamn stupid, I‘m surprised he still knows how to breath. Goten and Trunks are just comic relief. And it’s original characters aren’t a whole lot better either. At least the Androids, Vegeta and Bulma are still decent.
What I especially love about the ending: Earlier in the show, Whis commented on how Goku and Vegeta cant fight as a team since either one just fights individually and not reacting to each other. That made them fighting together very uncoordinated, which could confuse an enemy but still was no replacement for actual Teamwork. And then at the end of the show, out of all those many characters this show has to offer, who is the one Goku can fight flawlessly with as a tag team? Is it Vegeta, his eternal rival? Is it Krillin, his best friend? Or is it Gohan, his eldest son? No, its Frieza, his mortal enemy. He was the one Goku was more in sync with than anyone else. I loved that.
I love the tractor joke so much. It's even funnier in the English dub IMO because Sean Schemmel adlibbed the "AaaAAAaaaAAAaiforgotmytractorAAAAAaaaAaAAaAAthathuuuuuuuurt" line, and I lost it at that line. I STILL smile at that joke to this day.
Great review Mark! I also always found hilarious that scene (17:39) where Vegeta fails to cook. In Italy that scene became a bit of a meme because Vegeta's VA, Gianluca Iacono, also voices Gordon Ramsay. It even got a hilarious montage by Iacono himself on his TH-cam channel, where he mixed that scene with scenes from Ramsay's shows and redubbed them to make a gag where Gordon is humiliating Vegeta for his inability to make eggs, and I love it.
Italian Yamcha is also in a bunch of low-budget, dollar store animations from Dingo Pictures/Midas Interactive, that seems like a country where it's real highs and lows being a voice actor.
@@Alucard-A-La-CarteWorking on low budget products happens everywhere. If a network acquires the licence to distribute a product, someone will have to work on the localization, wether the product is good or not; a voice actor doesn't choose which roles to play, otherwise the directors don't call them anymore. You have to be a professional and do your job well according to the director's guide, even if you don't like it, especially if you don't like it to make sure you don't half-ass it. In facts, voice acting covers so many different products that it's pretty rare to work on something that you'd actually like, but that also depend on the personality of the individual (Christian Iansante, the voice of Rick of Rick & Morty and Rick of the Walking Dead and many others is notorious for hating almost everything he works on and he's not shy about it 😅 yet he always gives it his best). Another example. Mario Cordova, Italian VA for He-Man back in the 80s, ended up voicing the narrator on the Teletubbies. He hated it, yet he did it for like 20 years. Because it was his job, even if you don't like it you have to do it.
39:00 - Vegeta's stance is Ashita no Joe reference (Many anime specially shonen reference it alot). Its basically a counter move that baits an opponent to attack and hit them with a cross counter. Kinda like what Vegeta was planning. Heck the whole Hit fight very boxing/joe like.
yeah mma fighters and boxers do that a lot, Conor McGregor is known to do stuff like that for example, Jon Jones as well but he uses his length even more to make it look like an illusion, Floyd Mayweather Jr as well. It's set up so that you have this sort of spring like stance in your step that is sort of visually hidden by your head being used as bait and being a big target your opponent has no choice but to pay attention to as soon as the opponent moves a muscle forward you launch your head backwards and out of their range, slip whatever they threw at you and counter it really really hard. Anytime you see a fighter standing with that head forward type of thing its always on purpose as bait, they are usually propped up on their front stance leg as well and put a little bend in the knee and use it as a spring to push themselves back more or less :)
That tractor grab Hercule punch though... I forgot about it until you mentioned it, and did a spit take over my laptop screen. That scene will never fail to crack me up, and I'm so glad I have a goldfish memory, so I can essentially reexperience it fresh every now and again.
Well done. Describing Gohan training for a day and seeing strong results, l wish you'd have used that line from Vegeta in DBZA. Semi-perfect Cell: "How? How did you get so strong!?" Vegeta: "I trained all day yesterday." SPC: "Oh, you think you're CUTE!?" V: "Bitch, I'm adorable."
Actually the technique Goku used on Roshi in the T.O.P. is basically the same as when Hit killed him when Goku hired him for his training. So it's not really out of nowhere.
Holy crap I'm glad someone FINALLY points out how Vegeto's outfit in the Goku Black arc made no sense considering he should be wearing a outfit that is the fusion of what both characters currently wear and Vegeta was wearing his full Saiyan armor and not just his under armor when they fused.
@@johnathangonzales1245 Lol, died to a virus hahaha, the only time we get any mention of death that is out of combat. No one else ever died from it ever again, a virus that took the life of a man that is basically a god amongst humans only did it to him hahaha.
@@anima94 that still doesn’t make any sense cause that would have to be an alternative (3rd) trunks cause the original trunk that went back in time died to cell, then the other trunks(2nd) actually succeeded in killing cell and the androids. And in both those timelines Goku is still dead so how does this trunks have the memory of the second trunks if the second trunks already confirmed he’s dead in his timeline. The whole zamasu thing doesn’t make sense cause trunks timeline hadn’t ever met Goku. And the other zamasu was killed by beerus
An effective way to remove Buu from the story could have been the other gods sensing the divine ki of supreme kais inside of Buu during the exhibition match and saying unless he expells the kais from him he wont be allowed to participate. Goku would probably say sure why not, but Shin would remind Goku and the rest of us that if the grand kai is removed from Buu that it could reawaken the evil dormant inside of Buu, and possibly create another version of Kid Buu.
sadly that cant work with the info we got in the manga in the moro arc, but i dont wanna spoil it for anyone who hasnt read it, so i wont get into that. 👀
Toppo was allowed to participate, despite him training to be a God of Destruction and even unlocking Hakai energy during the tournament. Goku and Vegeta _are_ gods, and yet they’re fine to join in.
Lowkey the Zeno appearance at the end felt weird. Like yeah having Zeno as a buddy solved these problems, but doesn’t that kinda invalidate any future threat?
Not necessarily. You have to remember that zamasu infested the entire timeline and since zeno no longer had a multiverse to govern it would be fine to just annihilate it@@mnstrtrckkd
Poor ending, zeno was just an out. He is a character of infinite power who has befriended Goku. That parts nice and is an ode to Goku's lovability. Then come the part " there is no way we win, but wait I have a friend with infinite power. I would've called him sooner" Introduction of characters with massive power jumps isn't new to DB. But it was tasteful like a pinch of seasoning. Now it's just a gimmick to make gags like "look tiny man has infinite power so wacky. Oh look he befriends this guy even after being just a high ranking being.
1:48:36 That moment with Vegeta feeling so much cringe or disgust that he couldn't even punch Ribrianne has to be one of the funniest moments in DBS to me, or even dragon ball in general. My ribs hurt after how much I laughed at that.
A better explanation for Boo not taking part in the ToP, would be that he has the power of the Grand Supreme Kai inside of him. Would make sense because Kais couldnt take part, and also would be a huge foreshadowing for the Moro arc.
Honest to god Majin Buu would be an immediate victory to universe 7 given how he can regenerate, heal people, stretch, and can even absorb people. No wonder they had to write him out, he's too good for a tournament like this.
The distinction is that Buu (especially Majin Buu) has been blasted away with things as normal as a strong kick. (See Kid Trunks' kick so he and Goten could save Vegeta before his final blast.) With flight being explicitly forbidden, this would make him a serious contender, but not an instant win. He'd have to play defensively to win.
They probably could have played into buu’s whimsical and silly nature as his main weakness, as he probably wouldn’t be taking the tournament and its rules as seriously as everyone else.
2:00:39 I feel like the thing people don't appreciate about this ending is that its a badass thing that DOESNT at all contradict any existing rules of energy attacks. Beams can already clash, and we've never seen two beams in this context (that being an unfired attack vs a launched one), so it is just using the existing rules in an interesting and unique way.
I 1000% agree with you about Episode 32 being amazing! When the show slows down the fights & explores a brand new fighter's unique, interesting & deadly way of fighting is just something I absolutely love about Dragonball! It's something the show does so well & it's on full display in Episode 32. It's just a crying shame that there aren't more moments like this in the show, although there ARE some. Hit is easily my favorite thing to come out of Super!
More consistent than toe?? Damn! Toes have been consistently allowing us to walk from place to place since the dawn of time! I didn't know a higher level of consistency could be achieved!
The gohan thing is an emotional payoff. Gohan in trunks' timeline was his best friend and master. His master was unceremoniously murdered in cold blood by the Androids. The man that trunks grew up with, the man that trained him. Seeing what gohan had become (the scholar, weak kid) was akin to how us the fans felt during the buu saga when gohan turned to his nerdy self. The payoff is trunks coming to understand that this gohan is what his gohan would have become as well should there have been peace. he sees this Gohan as an alternate to his own master and is happy that his master had a happy life and a future. It means a lot to trunks knowing what a person gohan in this timeline is. That "filler" episode of Gohan and Trunks spending the day together was an episode meant to show trunks' understanding of this side of Gohan. it wasn't filler imo.
Yeah, it also gives trunks another drive to keep fighting. Trunks has been in survival mode most of his life, and at this point he thinks everyone close to him is dead, and he is visibly distraught and grieving and it’s probably not clear to him why he should keep fighting (although he still would, it’s just that as he is at this point his spirit is badly damaged). Being with Gohan seemed to help heal his spirit though, and strengthen his resolve to fight.
He'll probably do it in arcs like the others Edit: He just tweeted about it and said he wants to make his DBZ review something special. So I'm guessing it'll be a 1 million subscriber video
One thing I love about Vegeta turning Blue against Cabba is seeing Goku, who is using that moment to watch gauge Hit's reaction. He could tell Hit was the most dangerous on their side and stared him down with that signature smirk. It's a small but enjoyable moment for me, I love that ark
Just wanna say Mark, the way you contextualize and point out the subtle aspects of certain moments in all the series’ you review- especially dragon ball, have made my and many other’s experiences all the more rich and meaningful. Thank you man.
I was literally looking for something to watch while doing therapy by grinding a game and this bad boy dropped as I was refreshing TH-cam. Your videos are always bangers so this is gonna be a treat.
I never thought of it, but seeing it again after a while I noticed that at 1:50:29 a non-beating heart is made start beating again by the use if an energy blast. Where did I see that before? Of course, in Dragonball Evolution where the "Kamehameha" (citation needed) is used for that very purpose. Thanks Toei, I really needed to be reminded of that movie.
I always felt like a big part of Vegeta training Cabba was influenced by him learning that the Universe 6 Saiyans never destroyed their Sadala. There are more Saiyans out there, but also those Saiyans are incredibly vulnerable to the galaxy around them. He wants Cabba to go Super Saiyan, at least in part, to help make sure Sadala doesn't go the same way that Planet Vegeta did, especially after learning that Frost is just Freeza With A PR Department and also using the Saiyans. Easily one of the best parts in Super.
@@dansmith1661 Except any threat they run into that's capable of destroying their planet is capable of destroying many planets. In the world of Dragon Ball people with under 20k powerlevel can destroy entire worlds in seconds. And there's absolutely FTL travel, since Namek is all of six days away. Which is, if you think about it, horrifying once DBZ devalues PL so much.
The series makes you empathize with Emperor Frieza. The bullshit the Saiyan girls were pulling in their fight with Goku really makes you think Frieza had a pretty cut and dry point when it came to destroying planet Vegeta. Kale and Caulifla could've made a pretty good ally there, they could've fought Goku just to increase their power levels then give him a little of their Ki and ask him to ally with the promise of using his Dragon Ball wish to restrict their universe, but no they had to try and fight him at his weakest ever. A very Mary Sueish point in the whole tournament as well. Yeah, this whole Saiyan nobility and warrior spirit is total bullshit. Goku should pull a Frieza on planet Sadala. Cabba is basically Universe 6's Krillin. Honestly I wanted Cabba to have more of a part too and more of a story as well, but he was thrown into the cupboard and wasn't given anything. I guess the writers were more interested in giving Kale and Caulifla a story and being okay with Cabba very weak performance. Maybe Vegeta feels exceptional to him because he's a second rate Saiyan just like him? lol
Frieza's recruitment is one of my favorite episodes of the whole series. The dialogue between Goku and Frieza is snappy and witty, the voice acting is great, and both characters actually feel like themselves while having a more evolved relationship. Instead of just hatred and the desire to stop each other, their relationship has evolved to an almost respect for each other, yet still a strong dislike. Great episode
Goku: Forgets senzu beans. Totallynotmark: could you imagine the goku who prepared for the androids making this mistake? Goku who prepared for androids: Here bulma hold these senzu beans while we go into the city to fight androids that we cannot sense.
@@Melomocksart ok you guys are confusing DBZA for canon there in canon he was supposed to take it when showing symptoms, i get it dbza is good but still
I thought it was mind boggling how Ginyu taking over Tagama's body was supposed to be any kind of threat, considering that him taking over Goku's body on Namek led to him not knowing how to utilize Goku's power properly so it essentially became useless. Now it suddenly doesn't work that way because of "shut up don't question it"?
Unpopular opinion: Vegeta vs Mageta is one of my favorite fights in the series. It’s creative, got some incredible moments for Vegeta as a character, and showcases a entertaining and funny character in Mageta.
Finally somebody agrees, Mageta was always such a underrated character, he was such a unique character with such a unique fighting style, I kinda wish he had more time in the TOP with a rematch against Vegeta where he trains to not be so easy to break by insults so he fights much longer than what he did in the universe 6 v 7 saga
I love when DB does those "gimmicky" style fights. It's actually one of the things I believe Super does a lot better than DBZ. In DBZ, almost every fight is solely decided by who has a higher power level, but in Super, the gimmicky style fights utilize a degree of strategy such as Gohan vs Lavender, Vegeta vs Magetta, Goku and Vegeta vs Trio de danger, etc
@@jantheking7028 Gimmicky is always great, especially those World Tournament days, Tien vs Goku were some of the best fights, because the Crane School was unique, they had telekinesis, they had flight, they had the +2 hands and x4 body things that made it really interesting. Then all these nice things became obsolete because Crane school became obsolete.
I remember the final episode I was watching it in a Cafe with tons of people watching at the same time , the tag team with Goku and Freeza was the most hype thing in the world , and Freeza trying to take him with him was something to remember at his point everyone in the Cafe was chanting Freeza Freeza Freeza , I was smiling and having the time of my life at that point it made me forget every disappointing moment in Super really it was so powerful so good that I still remember to this day.
Freiza was the MVP. Dude had amazing character growth, and has shown hes not just a spoiled brat born with absurd power. He was the ruthless counter balance the universe 7 team needed. I really wish Majin Buu wouldve been able to participate, but lets be honest here, Buu wouldve clapped everyone. Hes immortal, super regeneration, and is the highest power level you can be outside of God-Ki. Only Toppo and Jiren would be able to handle buu.
@@OTG1776 when the final 2 episodes were airing, there were viewing parties all over the world, in stadiums, cafes, movie theaters...i personally watched it with my friends at a bar. It was amazing seeing how many dragon ball fans there are...and how old we were lmao.
Honestly, one thing that REALLY bothered me throughout the entire show was the complete lack of any body damage while fighting. Yes... I get that things have been toned WAY down since the earlier DB/DBZ days, but not even red marks?? They can't even so much as use red scratches or bruises, & maybe just a LITTLE blood? I mean c'mon man, there is such a thing as going from one extreme to the other, and in my humble opinion it really hurts the action! The damage clearly taken by the heroes adds tension & weight to each fight, & when a character is supposed to be losing but looks exactly the same as they did at the beginning... the fights lose something emotionally speaking. I really, really hated this. Has Japan really gotten THIS cautious with it's kids these days? Hell, we have far, FARRRRRR worse bloody content on prime time TV these days. Is a tiny bit of unrealistic cartoon blood going to scar children for life? Of course not. That would be an absurd notion to say the least.
That's exactly why i can't watch or enjoy Super at all, if the slice of life or narrative is bad, atleast i can rely on some bloody and tense fights right?.....nope
When Roshi goes down and Krillin is screaming from the bench "Goku, please!!", that really got me. And Goku calling Roshi "master" after all these years.
@@VeggiePun it spells the punchline out before the punchline arrives (the "punchline" being goku making an even worse job of pretending to be hit by getting his tractor), and tries to add to really a well-made joke, ruining the surprise, etc.
Theres a video where someone cut the ToP fights together all at once. The length was about as long as the series said the tournament had been, which is pretty cool detail.
The relaxed stance that Vegeta takes against hit is him trying to "loosen up" because Whis says he's too tense when he fights. The stance is part of training.
I noticed Vegetas stance was weird too, but I realized he's likely applying Whiz's advice that he's too tense and, seeing Hit as unrefined at first, is choosing a pose that will force him to work on his weaknesses as a fighter.
1:19:51 In Defense of Goku for the start of this arc, It is explained later that Zeno was planning on wiping out much of the multiverse for their low mortal count anyways. This tournament gave them a fighting chance to survive.
Except that whole argument is retroactively rendered moot when 17 wishes back every universe Zeno erased, putting every universe right back in the position they were before the tournament... poised to be wiped out by Zeno. But because Toriyama is a hack, that will never be mentioned or brought up at all.
@@dylancross1039I believe it's implied though that the tournament was a test, and 17 made the right call. If the wish was something extremely selfish, he would have erased Universe 7 too, then started over
the fact still stands that goku didn’t know about that. and even if he didn’t know what zeno would do to the losing universes (erasing them) he ignored the others telling him that it’s a bad idea to remind zeno about things like that. so it was just dumb luck that he saved them all. alls well that ends well i guess
@jayreid2513 So... still lazy writing for the sake of a payoff. To clarify, that nonsense sets it up so the ONLY possible winners that wouldn't wind up with every universe involved wiped out, would be Universe 7. This entirely Removes any possible tension, not just because you can tell from a country mile away the exact result the moment the Super Dragon Balls were mentioned as a reward, but because you know that none of the other universes except MAYBE 6 would have wished anyone back, and even then it would have been Universe 7 and not everyone. Again, a better writer would have done something not as contrived.
Great review I never imagined Dragonballs story would be continuing this long after it started. One thing to note about the tournament is the Zenos kept making exceptions to the rules, as long as they thought it was cool they allowed it.
The way you explained the final episode is so perfect. People who didn't understand cause they care for action(not a bad thing) can understand it better.
Even for someone like me who doesn't care as much about action Mark often puts things in a way that gives weight to things I didn't understand. I fully agree that the way he explains things is usually either perfect, or at least perfect from the perspective he talks about it in
bringing back frieza was one of the best decisions this series made imo every second he's on screen is an absolute treat (rf saga aside) and is hands down my favorite dragon ball villain HE'S JUST A SILLY GUY
It starts super weak, but ends super strong. That to me is a good summery of this anime. It was INCREDIBLY rocky and messy, but at the end of the day I'm genuinely glad it exists.
@@kin4386 *correct opinion ;) Drawn out with no substance, stakes that don’t matter (did we honestly believe all existence would end?) overly expositional on purpose for the sake of dragging it out a ill conceived story where 1 episode’s worth of story/content was shamelessly dragged out over 5, endless punching isn’t a story, obviously made up as they went along with no clue what they were doing. Very obviously they only had enough story to last a month or two but they stretched it to over 6 because they had no plans post ToP… (the entire saga was over 8 months) I could go on. You might enjoy it and more power to you, but it was objectively terrible by any standards of storytelling & media. It was shit.
The short little edited gags like ''Resurrection OOF'' got me bursting and laughing non stop for how well timed and not expected they were. Awesome videos dude!
The Goku Black arc deserved so much better. Holy shit that ending and those god awful comedic moments need to go! (Although I did love the idea of Goku Black not even being aware of how his power works. It added both to his madness and the fact he was losing control.)
Goku black wasnt enough for him and so he went to others universes and made vegeta black, trunk black, gohan black, goten black, pan black. Sorry but i aint trying to be races because here comes black freiza lol.
When Vegeta fights Hit he takes an expert level fight stance known as 'leading with your chin' originally developed by Sokka in ATLA who knew these universes were shared.
I imagine the power goku uses to revive roshi is just ki blasts to start his heart, same thing he did with the blast he revived himself with in his fight with hit
You know what would have been a long throw-back in the Goku Black arc? Using the micro band that Bulma created way back in Dragon Ball to fit more people into the time machine.
I remember seeing Super, checking out the TH-camrs and someone talking about Goku recreating his fight with his grandpa. I didn't realize either, so I immediately went to watch it again and cried like a baby.

I didn't really like how all it took for Cabba to become super saiyan was to get a little angry... like, they dont know what super saiyan is, yet it's this easy to achieve? Has no saiyan ever gotten angry in his universe? Or been threatened? Seems pretty improbable.
@@slinkyslink5161 nah they handled the transformation terribly from a writing point. it also shows how broken the power scaling is lol. super saiyan was god tier a few arcs ago, now it's such an after thought

Wow I didn't notice the Goku vs Gohan reenactment when I watched it. That really is a sweet moment. Goku is remembering his lost loved one in the most Goku way possible: reliving a fight with them.
Tournament of Power had three of the best sequences in all of Dragon Ball imo: 1) Ultra Instinct Sign Goku vs Jiren 2) Beam Skating (they knew how ridiculous it was they showed it to use three times) 3) The final desperate grapple to take out Jiren. It captured a visceral intensity that hasn't been seen since the Saiyan Saga. I will never get tired of watching it. It's evocative every time. I'm tearing up a big right now thinking about it. This video contextualized it in a way I hadn't realized before.
2:14:05 the thing for me that i love about before vegeta told goku to get back up and defeat jiren is when Vegeta was telling the clown god ,that's dick riding jiren, that his race, no matter what, will break their limits no matter what and they all seen it first hands with the other Saiyans in the tournament that got me even more hype for goku tbh because we all knew he was gonna surpassed it
I disagree with you on episode 52, because it shows an important development in trunks. You have to imagine what trunks’ life has been like up to that point. He has been in doomsday after doomsday scenario, seeing everyone he loves die over time, with very small periods of peace throughout. He has had very few moments in his life where he feels like he’s safe (if any), and is constantly in survival mode. The idea of being in a house with a normal family just having their slice-of-life moments is something he’s likely never had the luxury to ponder. When he arrives, he’s still in that survival mentality, unable to relax and feeling like he is just wasting his time. By the end though, he finds that there’s great joy in these little moments that can only exist in peaceful times, and trunks thinks “thank you, Gohan, for reminding me what I’m fighting for”. This implies that trunks may have been struggling to think of why he should keep fighting. This is even more understandable when you consider that every person close to him is now dead in his timeline. If you were in that position, and most of your memories were simply Armageddon-like nightmares, it might be difficult to see the light that would keep you moving. This little trip to Gohan’s helped him see what the world could be, and helped drive him back to the fight.

Kale and Caulifla are supposed to be part of the Japanese "girls love" trope where they believe that 2 girls are the best of friends and their relationship emulates that of a boyfriend and girlfriend even though they are plutonicly friends from my understanding
Ugh, that is the absolute worst. Having two girls “pretend” to love each other so they can practice for a “real” relationship with a guy is just a ridiculous and insulting thing to teach.
@@emblemblade9245 emulating relationships with friends reduces chances of divorce regardless of orientation for both men and women, like the comment above says the girls love trope is literally just the woman version of a bromamce, it's just those situations that get a special name
The strange thing with rushing Gohan’s power up is that they easily could have used multiple Gohan training episodes to pad the episode count (instead of feeling the need to use unrelated filler episodes). Like parts of the series feel padded while other parts feel rushed and not given enough time to really land. (Overall it was still entertaining though, just a bunch of missed opportunities)
For all of Super's faults, after Ressurection F, any time Frieza is on screen it is just phenomenally fun. His boundless charisma just seeps into every scene.
sad they did not try do a G F Fusion
They really did him a favor and I liked him as a character and not because he is a badguy.
I would agree. I was against reviving Frieza but he honestly is a good addition
He's the only guy that makes sense in the entire series. He was the only guy in the tournament that actually had a strategy.
Also, Frieza is evolving his methods. He is training to get power so he can keep power. That is literally unprecedented in Dragon Ball where villains are introduced and thrown away.
I bet the funimation crew had a good laugh when they translated the “hold your fire, this man isn’t black” line 😂

@@DaeronMaxedOut Honestly, same.
For people like Mark who tend to focus on power levels this isn't going to be that meaningful.
Filler is supposed to seem important but in the grand scheme there's no difference in the rest of the plot if that has ever happened. It just does and never matters again
I really like that episode
Lowkey the filler episodes in the Black/Zamasu saga were good scene setters. The future Trunks/Gohan episode actually made the stakes of the people in the future world seem much higher. Future Trunks thrives for the life that present Gohan has, as it’s one he used to have himself.
If I recall correctly, the Battle of Gods film, in one hour, managed to foreshadow Videl being pregnant, while Super, in nine episodes, just brings it up out of the blue when it’s relevant
yeah dende was going to tell everyone but she told him to not say it
Yeah, Videl got grazed by something and was hurt, so Dende healed her. When he did this, he was able to sense another life within her.

The spirit sword is such an anomoly to me. Like, they literally had the perfect explanation right there at the beginning of the arc. All they needed to do was say that while he was training for Buu with the Supreme Kai, he also trained with King Kai to learn his techniques as the Supreme Kai thought they'd come in handy against Babidi, Dabura, and Buu.
i think it's badass.
@@donnieconyers2829 Sure. It definitely is. But it came out of nowhere, which feels cheap.
I'll never get over the fact that Beerus politely asked Buu for one cup of pudding and Buu just went full asshole on him for no reason

That's f***ing awesome!

I must admit, I did not notice Goku reliving his fight with Grandpa Gohan while waiting for Freeza. Full tearing-up moment.
yup, hit hard
39:00 - Vegeta's stance is Ashita no Joe reference (Many anime specially shonen reference it alot). Its basically a counter move that baits an opponent to attack and hit them with a cross counter. Kinda like what Vegeta was planning. Heck the whole Hit fight very boxing/joe like.

@@k.i.l.l.a.c.a.m3531 cross counter ♥
i thought of bryan hawk when he made that stance
yeah mma fighters and boxers do that a lot, Conor McGregor is known to do stuff like that for example, Jon Jones as well but he uses his length even more to make it look like an illusion, Floyd Mayweather Jr as well.

I love when DB does those "gimmicky" style fights. It's actually one of the things I believe Super does a lot better than DBZ. @@VeggiePun it spells the punchline out before the punchline arrives (the "punchline" being goku making an even worse job of pretending to be hit by getting his tractor), and tries to add to really a well-made joke, ruining the surprise, etc.
@@molnet999what surprise?
Theres a video where someone cut the ToP fights together all at once. The length was about as long as the series said the tournament had been, which is pretty cool detail.
The relaxed stance that Vegeta takes against hit is him trying to "loosen up" because Whis says he's too tense when he fights. The stance is part of training.
I noticed Vegetas stance was weird too, but I realized he's likely applying Whiz's advice that he's too tense and, seeing Hit as unrefined at first, is choosing a pose that will force him to work on his weaknesses as a fighter.
Whiz 💀

2:00:50 "I quite literally didn't expect it in the slightest"
Neither did Kefla.
1:19:51 In Defense of Goku for the start of this arc, It is explained later that Zeno was planning on wiping out much of the multiverse for their low mortal count anyways. This tournament gave them a fighting chance to survive.
Plus the universes that were competing were already going to be erased before Goku said something about the tournament
I loved Gokus “UWAAAAAAAAA……UHHHHAAAAAAAAAA” when Hercule punched him, absolute gold.
Better is the dub where goku says " I forgot my tractor ahhhh"
Great review I never imagined Dragonballs story would be continuing this long after it started. One thing to note about the tournament is the Zenos kept making exceptions to the rules, as long as they thought it was cool they allowed it.
The way you explained the final episode is so perfect. People who didn't understand cause they care for action(not a bad thing) can understand it better.
Even for someone like me who doesn't care as much about action Mark often puts things in a way that gives weight to things I didn't understand. I fully agree that the way he explains things is usually either perfect, or at least perfect from the perspective he talks about it in
@@leetfukk facts. He has awesome content.
i didnt even know people didnt like the last episode. it was godly, and a beautiful way to end it. It set up SO MUCH for future content.
I love that you referenced the "Kaio-what?!" joke. Made my friggin day.
bringing back frieza was one of the best decisions this series made imo every second he's on screen is an absolute treat (rf saga aside) and is hands down my favorite dragon ball villain HE'S JUST A SILLY GUY
It starts super weak, but ends super strong. That to me is a good summery of this anime. It was INCREDIBLY rocky and messy, but at the end of the day I'm genuinely glad it exists.
Facts
Dunno about the manga, but tournament of power was one of the worst arcs in the entire shows history.
@@famalam943 In your opinion.
@@kin4386 *correct opinion ;)
Drawn out with no substance, stakes that don’t matter (did we honestly believe all existence would end?) overly expositional on purpose for the sake of dragging it out a ill conceived story where 1 episode’s worth of story/content was shamelessly dragged out over 5, endless punching isn’t a story, obviously made up as they went along with no clue what they were doing. Very obviously they only had enough story to last a month or two but they stretched it to over 6 because they had no plans post ToP… (the entire saga was over 8 months) I could go on.
You might enjoy it and more power to you, but it was objectively terrible by any standards of storytelling & media. It was shit.
@@famalam943 Most of that could be applied to most arcs in Dragon Ball to be honest lmao
The short little edited gags like ''Resurrection OOF'' got me bursting and laughing non stop for how well timed and not expected they were. Awesome videos dude!
Okay did anyone notice when Frieza comes to help 17 they splice their music themes together?? It was my favorite music moment in the whole series!
And yes I'm watching this entire review. I love how you rereleased these reviews as one. Giving me something to do while I'm stuck in the hospital
I wish you best recovery. God bless you, your loved ones and the whole world.
Amen.
Thank you friend! May all the kaioshin and destroyers bless me with goof fortune; and may zeno erase my problems! Much love friend
Also just noticed your greek name. Love to see another proud member of humanities WARRIOR RACE!

My favourite scene in all of DBS was the Mr. Satan punching Goku one. Even the clip in your video still made me giggle.
one thing you can say… there will never be another goku. the impact, the love from his fans, the pure hard work and determination. rip toriyama
The Goku Black arc deserved so much better.
Holy shit that ending and those god awful comedic moments need to go!
(Although I did love the idea of Goku Black not even being aware of how his power works. It added both to his madness and the fact he was losing control.)
went down hill after it became a body snatcher story instead of it being a What If
@@creatorsfreedom6734 The Goten theory would've been so much more interesting
@@nothanksfools what I was the synopsis for that ?
The ending was never bad
Goku black wasnt enough for him and so he went to others universes and made vegeta black, trunk black, gohan black, goten black, pan black. Sorry but i aint trying to be races because here comes black freiza lol.
When Vegeta fights Hit he takes an expert level fight stance known as 'leading with your chin' originally developed by Sokka in ATLA who knew these universes were shared.
Can't knock him out if he's just built different
I imagine the power goku uses to revive roshi is just ki blasts to start his heart, same thing he did with the blast he revived himself with in his fight with hit
That or just a more advanced form of giving his energy to someone.
7:03 Fun fact, the darkness that was instilled in the souls of millions by Goku's dead eyes in this frame will one day birth a universe-ending evil that only the Z Fighters can defeat.
I had never seen Super, but was familiar with the stories when I found your channel. Your passion for all things Dragon Ball is what finally pushed me to watch Super. When I saw this video uploaded last night, I knew I had to finish it before I watched, and as soon as credits rolled on 131, I came here to watch this. Thank you for sharing your love with us, Mark. This is as a fantastic video.

Episode 47 was perfect. I could watch it over and over. So beautiful
Kaiser and Lani shouted you out on the teamfourstar creator commentary videos they have been making. You're the best Mark and it made me so happy to see just a clip from a team that has given so much love
1:19:46 Zen-Oh was going to erase the low mortal level universes anyway. Goku gave everyone a fighting chance.
Mark is hands down my favorite TH-camr. I can't think of anyone else I get super excited for when I see the video is 3 hours long. Honorable mention super eyepatch Wolf. You Irish dudes are doing your thing
the vegeta cabba section is one of the best of all of super and I'm so glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.
fantastic dynamic introduced into the story for sure
I didn't really like how all it took for Cabba to become super saiyan was to get a little angry... like, they dont know what super saiyan is, yet it's this easy to achieve? Has no saiyan ever gotten angry in his universe? Or been threatened? Seems pretty improbable.
@@slinkyslink5161 nah they handled the transformation terribly from a writing point. it also shows how broken the power scaling is lol. super saiyan was god tier a few arcs ago, now it's such an after thought
48:05 You could say that Goku since that happened practiced more and / or learned how to use the Kaioken in a way that wouldn't cause his body as much fatigue, tiredness, etc.
15:16 I really love what Sean adds to that scene 😂
Hey mark, Be wary of the sponsor you chose, there's a huge chance it's a scam, there was a video on the company heading the production for them
Yes, kamikoto is a scam.
He doesn't care as long as he gets paid
@@shelsilverstein7436 I can't blame him
I mean if Mark was a cooking channel I would understand him not doing the sponsor because it would be his specialty.. but he does anime, so can't really fault him if he gets paid for it.. it's when a cooking channel promotes kamikoto knifes, that's when I get kinda upset because at that point they should know, hey these aren't as good as they should be for this price point.
Also the fact that his audience is filled with children and teens. Who wouldn’t find it useful
Wow I didn't notice the Goku vs Gohan reenactment when I watched it. That really is a sweet moment. Goku is remembering his lost loved one in the most Goku way possible: reliving a fight with them.

I love dragon ball super tbh , it wasn’t perfect , but it was way better than GT
Tournament of Power had three of the best sequences in all of Dragon Ball imo:
1) Ultra Instinct Sign Goku vs Jiren
2) Beam Skating (they knew how ridiculous it was they showed it to use three times)
3) The final desperate grapple to take out Jiren. It captured a visceral intensity that hasn't been seen since the Saiyan Saga. I will never get tired of watching it. It's evocative every time. I'm tearing up a big right now thinking about it. This video contextualized it in a way I hadn't realized before.
That final moment at the tournament of power… ❤️🐉💫
Love this review Mark.
2:14:05 the thing for me that i love about before vegeta told goku to get back up and defeat jiren is when Vegeta was telling the clown god ,that's dick riding jiren, that his race, no matter what, will break their limits no matter what and they all seen it first hands with the other Saiyans in the tournament that got me even more hype for goku tbh because we all knew he was gonna surpassed it
Didn't thought I would be watching this in one sitting but here I am after 2 hours and 27 minutes.

This took me 3 days to watch but was worth every second, those last 3 episodes are soooooo good
I disagree with you on episode 52, because it shows an important development in trunks.
Mr Satan punching goku is the most hilarious thing I’ve ever watched
The Dub version of 15:10 is 1000% so much better in this one instance hahah "ohh i forgot my tractor" hahahah

1:50:59 It's great that you mention the strong storyboarding on this episode as 107 was Megumi Ishitani's debut as a storyboard artist
Kale and Caulifla are supposed to be part of the Japanese "girls love" trope where they believe that 2 girls are the best of friends and their relationship emulates that of a boyfriend and girlfriend even though they are plutonicly friends from my understanding
So it's like a bromance but with girls?
@@katherine6326 basically yeah
