In the area where I live in the Eastern Cape, 63 learners were hospitalized from these types of snacks in the Upper Zingcuka village last year in November. This points to the ongoing lack of proper regulatory standards in our government. While departments like the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries which are responsible for food safety in their own capacities as laid out in legislature, it's clear that the local municipalities are not doing enough to ensure these standards are upheld in spaza shops, allowing dangerous products to slip through the cracks.
