The land ships come right out of American, French, and British sci-fi magazines of the time. I've seen a bunch of covers that looked like those. Struggling to find them now on another tab, but there is a specific image of an orange one with a great big half-bullet plow on the front. I remember every time I've seen it I've thought that had to be the one the Valkyria Chronicles people looked at.
This is one of my favorite videos about fictional tanks because it's not nitpicky about innacuracies and go "Umm aktually they shouldnt work this game is so bad who even thought about that?!?!" I do like how you decide to play in the game logic and show the inspiration for tanks. I cannot wait to see more!
@@dashiellgillingham4579 it's like trying to find valid analysis for the vehicles of things like Command and Conquer, Killzone, etc. I mean, who is the dumbass in the ISA who thinks that transporting troops on strike crafts that have no roofs over them is a good idea, on a planet whose environment is hostile to both normal humans and the inhabitants of said planet, with thunderstorms that have been weaponized by the local inhabitants. In Command and Conquer Red Alert 2, the Apocalypse tank may look imposing, but it is a slow moving war machine, and would've likely collapsed under its own weight due to the amount of guns on board, twin main cannons and an assortment of AA guns, and I think its biggest threats are mobile vehicles with sufficient firepower that can effectively flank it. The same could be said about the Chinese Overlord tank from Command and Conquer :Generals.
3:01 Hey, only half the main characters in the series are tank commanders. Interestingly the artbook for the first game that you reference shows that they had a crew system in early builds of the game, but it was cut at some point. I've always headcanoned it as these tanks having additional crewmembers that you just never see because they're clearly designed for more than 2 people based on the number of hatches. Anyway, even though it's an SPG I think you could have slotted the Karl-Gerät inspired siege mortars from the VC3 OVA in here as well. I also hope to see a mention of the cursed half-track Sturmtiger that appears in the aforementioned artbook if you ever do a video on Gallian tanks.
Oh shoot, u right! My head must have defaulted to 1 and 4 when writing that part, since those are the ones I have the most experience with, when writing that part. I have also had similar headcannons that the tanks would have multiple crew we just don't see them on screen. I actually did have a segment planned for the Karl Gerat things as well as the SPGs we see in the background in the game including a meme where it had the OVA scenes cut with the GuP Karl Gerat scenes but I cut them out for the sake of time, under the justification that, like you said, they were more artillery pieces. If I do another video, I think the federation one would likely come first as that would be easier to make and I would have to play through less games but will def look into the rejected concept arts if I get around to it.
0:12 I expected the ships, but you using AL is heresy, Kancolle just right there. Aside from that, this is a really good video, been seeing alot of VC content lately and have been really good. Hopefully you include the gallia and federation tanks(also including from VC3)
Thanks! I'd like to do one with the other factions but in Gallia's case not only would I need to essentially replay the first game, but also play through the second game which is where the lion's share of Gallian tanks are featured.
Sidenote: I doubt that the radiators are supposed to simulate weaker rear armor, because that is already simulated. All vehicles in the VC games (and infantry for that matter too) have different values for front, side and rear protection. I'd posit that it's more like an "ammo detonation" type of thing, but relying on an easily spotted outside marker, rather than having to model internal architecture for every vehicle or leaving it to a dice roll. Like how getting a headshot infantry increases your damage by a fixed amount, rather than having a "crit chance" type of mechanic. Anyway, great video. I find it interesting how Valkyria Chronicles manages to portray complex real-world situations and difficulties far more tastefully than plenty of other video games set in WW2, all that whilst having an anime-inspired art style and occasional beach episodes is rather impressive.
There is a variant of the IS which would have featured a rear mounted turret. This was known as the IS-2Sh. The Lupus pulls many design elements from that, whereas the hull is a strange amalgamation of the Tiger P and IS-2 chassis, with it being far more boxy and angular. The turret behind the very large mantlet and grenade launcher system is essentially an IS-2 turret with a stalhelm / kabuto style collar around the sides and rear (aesthetic choice I'm sure) and a Tiger style cylindrical cupola. The Lupus Regnum pulls more from the German side of tank design with the addition of armored screens. The added bulk makes it look like a very weird Maus.
Wonderful video! Imperial Medium my beloved... I love multiturrets... Too bad they never used their hull front machine guns and mortars in-game. Same with the light tank, it only uses the hull mortar in the VC1 town invasion mission intro from what I recall..
I strongly suggest taking a look at the "Metal Slug" series. It would make for a very intresting video. If you've never heard about it imagen Rambo in Vietnam the anime.

It's art, not technology. It's weirdly hard to find a valid analysis of stuff like this.

VC1 didn't have different values for front/side/rear armor, only for body and tracks
@@Alex53Ace That's my bad, must've misremembered. I don't recall if VC2 had it, but by VC3 they definitely did.
@@Tepid24yeah, it’s the PSP games that has front, side, and rear armor values for all units
