My dad and I used smart strip coated the whole car and covered with plastic, we let it set and pulled plastic and it worked fantastic. We used razor blade scrapers to scrape the whole car down.
Hey Jon, The brown looks like a rust inhibitor or primer. Looking at you trying to take off the chrome screws, I got a chuckle because I ended up grinding off the heads off my Bronco, wY back when. Forget that... get heat gun, warm up the area you’d like to take it off, little by little like a foot size and scrape. Comes off like butter. Try it, worked best for me you’d be surprised. Did my entire truck.
Metal scraper works better just be careful not to damage or make scratches but plastic one isn’t sharp or thin enough at the end to do a quick job picking it up off the metal.

Was it painted two tone at one time or from the factory
coat and the cover with a plastic trash bag and keep the stripper from drying out.. once it drys you gotta do it over..
