    My mom used to freeze pecans from our trees every year. She would just take out what she needed and seal them back up! Unfortunately, I don't know how long they lasted frozen. Thanks for the reminder AG! Take care, stay healthy! 💜

      I have also frozen pecans and they have lasted a few years. I've found cashews do not freeze well.

    In Forest Gardening, nuts replace cereal grains as a source of food, because they require far less time, effort, care and resources to grow them!

    Perfect. Answered all my questions Where's there's a lot of conflicting info on long term storage. This was great. Vacuum seal in bags, OK. Vacuum seal in jars, OK. NO OXYGEN ABSORBERS. Also, if chips or nuts are in a Vacuum sealed container when purchased, just leave it alone. I can put unopened bags and containers in air tight 5 gal buckets with no oxygen absorbers , and they"'d be OK for a year or two. If I open a bag, I can reseal with Vacuum sealer in a jar or in sealer bags. Thank you so much. I'm assuming the same applies to the bags and bags and bags of almond and coconut flour I have. But I'm thinking the flour would have LESS than 10% oil/moisture, so would last longer than whole nuts.
    CAN I USE OXYGEN ABSORBERS WITH ALMOND FLOUR? OR COCONUT FLOUR? OR LUPINE FLOUR????

    Why is vacuum sealing OK for nuts, but not an oxygen absorber? Doesn't vacuum sealing (FoodSaver) also remove the oxygen? I'd like to keep nuts for a couple years but worry about sealing up high-fat foods like nuts. All I do now is keep them in the freezer.

  • @lisabreeding1861

    So if I take a bag of nuts that I just bought at the store, put them in a foodsaver bag and seal it. How much extra time would that give me past the use by date? And if I also freeze them as well?

    What about honey roasted nuts. I’ve tired to only stock dry roasted nuts with no salt. Is it okay to store honey dry roasted nuts. And what is the shelf live. I ask because of all the additional ingredients in them.

    Please could you tell me what the difference is between using an oxidiser sachet and vacuum packing. As both remove oxygen couldn't that have the same effect. I have some bags of nuts and its not clear to me. Thank you

    Hello AlaskaGranny, thank you for your video. You advised against using oxygen absorbers with nuts, but several other food storage specialists said it's alright to use oxygen absorbers with nuts because Botulism happens only when the FOOD IS WET. And nuts are NOT wet food.
    What do you think?

    • @AlaskaGranny
      @AlaskaGranny  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nuts contain a high amount of unsaturated fat, a delicate type of oil, which makes them highly prone to going rancid.

    But if you remove the air using a seal a meal or using only oxygen absorber. Cant you get botulism because of the oils. No matter what procedure you use.
    In other words. If removing air does it cause botulism. I’m confused. Thank you

    • @AlaskaGranny
      @AlaskaGranny  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Removing air does not cause botulism. Botulism grows only in an air free environment. Oil goes rancid. Improperly processed foods allow botulism to grow. Vacuum sealing does not remove all of the air. You can read more about this topic at the CDC website.
