After growing up in the 80s & chasing 4070 every Saturday in the Summer with my Dad, I'm pretty sure I could pick that whistle out of a lineup. Great to hear, it brings back great memories!!

I am from Durand, Michigan lived there my whole life and still do on the Grand Trunk Western the town and junction 4070 called home for many decades and were she ended her career on the Grand Trunk and were she pulled and finished her last steam revenue freight run on the Grand Trunk. When I learned as a kid in 90s she was still around and operating it filled me with alot of joy to know there was a former Grand Trunk Western locomotive in operation but when I learned she has been out of service in need of maintenance and repairs I was a little disappointed but to hear her beautiful whistle again on the Hocking Valley was beautiful and when I watched the footage I was not seeing Hocking Valley 3 I saw 4070 in the footage the whole time and in my mind. I pray and hope for the day 4070 will be alive and breathing again and steaming through the cuyahoga Valley again. With her and age of steam GTW 6325 also quite I want to see a Grand Trunk Western locomotive alive and running again being I grew up around the GTW I love there steam power. 4070s whiste is one of my most loved whistles.

Amazing! Glad to hear her voice roaming around once again.. it will be an exiting day when 4070 herself returns to operation.

One of the guys from MRPS brought the whistle to the Youngstown Whistle Blow Thanksgiving weekend 2011. I was there and paid to blow it. I did shoot video of the event and have it somewhere...

It sounds like the 4960’s 5 chime she had back in 96’

I’m curious to ask I might’ve seen this in a few side poses of 4070 on the engineer side does she have a single note air horn mounted on front of the cab on the engineers side? it’s interesting that it was not functional as the grand trunk class mikados were not equipped with a single note airhorn

The good thing about this locomotive is that it didn't end up in Richard Jenson's ownership, Dick Jensen is perhaps infamously known in the steam community for the scrappings of several locomotives including that Grant Trunk Pacific which was torched in Chicago back in 1987.

What type of whistle is it. If I have an 18-inch gauge railroad someday, I'd like to have one made like it to give my engine close to the same sound.

It’s a 5-chime whistle, believed to be from the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. The original Grand Trunk whistle was stolen during the locomotive’s first rebuild in the 1960’s, and this one was installed to replace it.
