At age 47 I still love Johnny Quest. I remember watching the series on Tv in the early 1970's up until my late teens. There is a huge difference between animation and cartoons. As a child I recognized this difference.
TheBookWorm1718 I hear you loud and clear my friend. You're right, some of these things still haven't been achieved. They may one day, but we're still not there.
TheBookWorm1718 Well I like to be optimistic. Sometimes I'm disappointed and sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised. I respect your decision not to think the same way though. I don't hate you. Peace to you brother.
TheBookWorm1718- I've been hearing about a live action "Quest" since 1969. Still no movie. Personally, I don't think it will ever be done. What they ought to do is another primetime cartoon. I know they did a revamp in the nineties with a weird ass "southern" Race for a second, before going back to the Race we remembered, and Race and Jade's daughter being added to the cast, which was okay, but... They ought to pour money into another primetime cartoon, complete with it's jazz score, that stays true to the original concept. The biggest advantage, of course, would be that Jonny would forever remain eleven years old! Anyway, that's my two cents worth.
@BizWiz Definitely an expression overused and used improprly but with the first Jonny Quest, yes, it was way ahead of its time even if it was loved by us kids of the 60s
Man... the combination of Doug Wiley and Alex Toth... One of the things that struck me as a kid watching this show - from the very beginning was the richness of the artwork and that kicking Bop sound track! Talk about an instantly recognizable and iconic look AND sound!
+A Culture Mind Of course you're right; it was the improbable taming of a monster that caught my attention (and its screaming call; drove my family crazy imitating it).
Steve O mine was the invisible monster. But there was characters killed off over the course of the episodes. Getting shot, blown up, accidents and crashes.
I was 6 when Jonny came started...It used to show at night in the beginning shows...It blew our little minds away...It was scary and so far ahead of its' time. Thanks so much for this upload...It's amazing the work done on this documentary!
I was ten years old in 1963. We watched every episode of 'Johnny Quest'. There was one episode..I'll never forget the line. Race Bannon is running a speedboat...Johnny yells out, "Get this bucket moving, Race!"... This video brings back memories...from half a century ago....
My dad's cousin Everett Sloan did character voices on Jonny Quest - mostly the bad guys. He was also the voice of Dick Tracy in the early 1960s cartoons, and played Bernstein in Citizen Kane.
What a great job. I have watched every single Johnny quest episode since I was little and I would still watch every one of them again today thank you for putting this together .top notch.🧤🕶😃
Thank you so much for uploading this doc here! I was a child in the sixties and Jonny Quest was one of the toon series that can be described as life markers of many of my generation, even here in Brazil. I think this documentary is certainly bound to become iconic itself!
I am (almost) in Heaven. Mucho thanks, Ron Vail, for sharing these 3 segments. Jonny Quest is my (and millions of others) most satisfying and perhaps best produced/drawn tv cartoon of the 20th century.
+cristian pop I had no idea what they had to go though if this was true. I still think that they are the best artist with what they had. Also great story telling....
1/19/15: Thank you for posting this documentary. I am 57yrs old and enjoyed Johnny Quest on Saturday morning cartoon line up. This is G-R-E-A-T. I never wanted to be Johnny Quest but I truly enjoyed watching the episodes. It seems the "quality" is not in movies, cartoons today as in yesteryears.
Congratulations, this documentary is a beautiful piece of art. I was born in 1967 and I had enjoyed this show during all my childhood. It is a sweet memory. Thanks for produce it.
what i loved about johnny quest was the vision to bring in a colorful-dark skinned-Indian little boy to the screen...for many African Americans(KIDS AT THAT TIME) we cheered hadji as one of our own...lets be real...here...i think that was the inner vision...multiculturalism at its best....this program was sooo dayum good..i could feel the energy and excitement of the episode...it was not a silly ass cartoon ..Quest was adult and serious...for some kids we needed science-art-strong fiction-travel-the unknown..MYSTERY-INTRIGUE-SUSPENSE-DRAMA....
An absolutely outstanding documentary, a real masterpiece. The time, effort, skill and dedication that went into making this truly must have been exceptional. A real treat and a significant emotional experience for anyone who was a true fan of this wonderful and unique series.
A deeply sincere thanx from a dedicated JQ fan ( was was 11 during 1st run, 68 now). My favorite episodes were the supernatural monsters ( Loup Garou, Turu, yeti , spirit of Anubis, and dragons of Ashida.)
I was born in ‘65, so I was too young to see JQ in its initial airing. It was rerun on a local channel in the morning when I was in grade school, though, and it seemed every kid I knew, both boys and girls, loved it. Great documentary.
Tim Matheson...the actor that voiced Jonny Quest is still around...thanks Tim and all those with HB that make this magnificent piece of Americana possible.
Thank you so much for this documentary! I too, grew up on the old Jonny Quest. This show KICKED ASS!!! And just the opening theme, let you know there was some serious S..T, about to go down! I really enjoyed your documentary and I'm thankful for learning so much about one of my all time favorites. This old show will always stand head and shoulders above those "Jonny" come lately new crap from the 80s/90s. Your dedication and hard work is greatly appreciated!
Great information thanks so much, I remember doing the Jonny Quest slide all over the House ! It drove my Mother nuts !! and wore out many socks !!! Lol Great memories
Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!!!! As a child, Jonny Quest, was my favorite show, in the U.S. The internet is wonderful to bring access to shows like this. P.S. My favorite show in Ireland and the U.K. was of course, THUNDERBIRDS.
I was five years old in 1964. When I first saw the ads for Jonny Quest, I was certain it must be a theatrical release, since nothing that looked that cool could possibly be on TV! I can still remember the chills I would get when that killer theme music would start, the mummy would walk, & Turu the Terrible would emit his blood curdling shriek.
Oh man, the music was just BANGIN" ! They used 5 trombones (a very Male instrument) three trumpets, two saxes (flute) and a few other people. Those guys were ALL excellent sight readers.
An absolutely flawless, informative and detailed documentary about this wonderful, one season animated television show. There is nothing else to add. The research, photos and "lost" video and audio clips included are nothing short of outstanding. It's like reading a comprehensive book about the series, but better, as it includes show footage and sound. I just don't understand why this excellent work of love by a TRUE fan has not been released on DVD/Blu-ray. I'm sure it has to do with copyright issues, but I, and I'm sure many others, would pay to have a real "hard" copy of this.
I was 6 when Jonny came on the scene... No kid would miss it in my neighborhood, we were glued to the TV! American entertainment at it's best, puts to shame the crap (real crap) they put out now for kids.. Really great job on this documentary, Top shelf work all the way. THANK YOU for taking the time doing it!!!
I really miss this, i was maybe 7 or 8 years old back in the summer of `95 when i first watched these episodes, watching this now really gives me a nostalgic feeling, it takes me back to a time when my life was much simpler and enjoyed simple joys like these.
Don, I am surprised, too! Yet, studios went ahead and made Scooby Doo? Josie and the Pussycats? And, Howard the Duck?? "What this town needs is an enema!" (said the Joker from the 'BATMAN' movie).
A great 3-part documentary about a great show. Thank you, Ron Vail and Chris Webber. Especially like the murals (the background paintings). The intro to the island off the coast of Florida and the music are marvelous.
This needs to be done or redone as an official (as in licensed from Warner Bros.) Hanna and Barbera remembrance doco. The beginning of animation on television led to a resurgence of interest in comics and related media. Love this...awesome and so well done.
Despite what Doug Wildey intended Jonny Quest wasn't "realistic", surrealistic maybe, over-the-top. That's what made it so great, and Bandit was the perfect comic relief.
If you were a kid in the 60's (me..8 years old..1964)), you WATCHED Jonny Quest! There had been nothing like it before! Who would think that a documentary about JQ would be 2 1/2 hours long? Yes, you will see 10% of what you knew about JQ, but it is the other 90% that you didn't know about JQ that makes this 3-part documentary so entertaining and interesting. The research that Ron put into this, coupled with the first class production values makes this a treasure. Amazingly, JQ only lasted one 26 episode season. Originating in prime time, its demise was a combination of network stinginess and later being thrown into the abysmal Saturday morning cartoon lineup. There wasn't a kid in 1964 who didn't want to BE Jonny Quest. Even though JQ drew influences from the 40's and 50's, it sought to be the the antithesis of the usual goofy cartoon animals and unbelievable animated "humans" of the time. We're talking adventure, intrigue, villains, high tech gadgets, exotic locations around the globe, etc. It was National Geographic in animation. Why is JQ still shown around the world today in reruns? The answer is simple....QUALITY. Hollywood is rarely visionary, preferring profitable repetition (like today...some things never change!) over originality, unless it brings in the big bucks! Sit back and enjoy this tribute to the creators, the tireless, first-rate staff and to the other contributors that made Jonny Quest what it was. Thank you Ron!
Johnny Quest wasn't a cartoon it was animated adventure with friends that were of different races, skills, abilities and temperments. It was just about the perfect adventure series for the time.
I was about nine yrs old when this series began and I recently purchased it on dvd. I watch it sometimes on Saturday morning just like I did when I was a kid. My 2 favorite episodes are The Quetong Missile Crisis and Calcutta Adventure. Cartoons nowadays don't compare to Jonny Quest..
Thank you, Ron Vail, that 1964-1965 series is the one that ALWAYS got my attention. Possibly the third, in America, to have animation in the science fiction/adventure genre that is definitely elegant and distinctive. I do a bit of animation and guitar playing, myself. I am an animation and music enthusiast.
On holidays, and it was not always the same holidays of each year, I would watch JQ marathons growing up well into my teens. I looked forward to it happening. I will always remember the spider like red eyed robots and Race Bannon. JQ is one of the best cartoons ever created.
We have had a lot of Animation Classics that are iconic but I think a case can be made for Jonny Quest being the best ever . The 90s reboot was good but oddly enough the Intro isn't and looks very dated especially compared to the first 1964 one !
A buddy and I were talking the other day about how great Jonny Quest was and it kind of got me excited to watch some episodes this weekend. Instead I stumble onto this documentary about Jonny Quest. ... Ron Vail, I don't know if you are the one who made this ... but it was incredibly well made. ... All of the historic information was just wonderful. I now know the truth about Bandit (but I still love him) and the two different men who voiced Benton Quest ... and why I never saw that very last scene form the closing credits in any actual episode ... it was from the Jack Armstrong pilot. Top notch work here. If you don't do this for a living ... you should. Not every TV show would warrant this kind of documentary but it, truly, would be amazing if there was a historical record like this for other shows. Thank you!
In the early days of cablevision where I live (late 1970's), I would watch Jonny Quest on *Sunday* morning cartoons. It never grew on me because it was preceded and followed by super hero cartoons. One was Samson and Goliath but I forget what the other was but it felt like a bad fit to me. Now I can appreciate it.
Nasher188- You can get the entire series at Walmart for like forty bucks. Quite a savings. When it first came out, I spent a hundred dollars buying it from Columbia House.
¡Feliz 50º aniversario de Jonny Quest! 18 set 1964 --- 18 set 2014! ¡Felicitaciones a Chris Webber por la producción de excelente documental y a Ron Vail por subirlo a youtube!!
When that theme music started it didn't matter where you were in the house you knew what was coming on, Even though their were lots of monsters in Jonny Quest, their was usually a man under the monster suit which taught kids to think logically and be realistic. Theirs no telling how many kids became scientist, engineers, pilots etc. because of this show.
Yes Star Trek gets its hog share of the credit and Star Trek did inspire people to enter Science , Math, Pilots, these careers but I think Jonny Quest may have been first. Jonny Quest was popular but no doubt in retrospect it was still ahead of its time. In 2019 and its Jonny Quest still holds up and the opening montage still rocks and the music is almost as good as Peter Gunn theme .
This is an absolutely brilliant documentary about an incredible work of art in animation--nothing like it! Thanks Ron & Chris; definitely sharing, including with some Disney Animators I know!! #IndeedATreat
Hello from Canada. Astonishingly good documentary. First rate. By the way, the music in the HB productions contributed immensely to the personality and success of their shows.
because they are NOT worth talking about. this ONLY ran 1 season from 64-65 and is STILL groundbreaking, and still they feel it was not as good as it could have been because ABC would not give them the budget that they really needed.ABC's reason for that, was that "JQ" wasn't getting half the ratings as the 'Flintstones" which cost $65,000 per episode. "JQ" would cost more per episode.ABC treated it like NBC treated "Star Trek" a expensive money loser. "JQ"was too FAR AHEAD of it's time.
At age 47 I still love Johnny Quest. I remember watching the series on Tv in the early 1970's up until my late teens. There is a huge difference between animation and cartoons. As a child I recognized this difference.
I'm 63 and still think this is the best animated adventure series ever created. The Incredibles movie franchise has the same feel.
JONNY QUEST,SPEED RACER, MARVEL COMIC CARTOONS 1966, BEST CARTOONS EVER.GOD BLESS YOU HANNA BARBERA! YOU PUT SO MANY SMILES ON MILLIONS OF CHILDREN.
Jonny Quest was so ahead of it's time. The storylines and technology were super cool!

TheBookWorm1718 I'm not familiar with this new concept, lol. How are they making it Harry Potter-ish?

Absolutely the best action cartoon ever. I never missed an episode. Best episode, The Curse of Anubis.
+A Culture Mind Lizard Men was very good, so was the Invisible Monster. I totally forgot about Turu the Terrible.
+Steve O My favorite was the pteradactyl or pteranadon. But I loved every episode.
+A Culture Mind Of course you're right; it was the improbable taming of a monster that caught my attention (and its screaming call; drove my family crazy imitating it).
Yeah, "mummy walking" music was right up there with "Jet Packing" music from Tulu
Steve O mine was the invisible monster. But there was characters killed off over the course of the episodes. Getting shot, blown up, accidents and crashes.

There's a Twilight Zone episode where he gets hooked on playing a slot machine which stands out in memory.
I think he came up with the whistle tune for the opening of the andy griffith show.
Wow you were truly lucky.
Wow! I know you are hella proud of him! Here's to you, and the classic character actor Everett Sloan.

What a master work you have created, Ron Vail. Simply stupendous, revealing all the "secrets" behind "Jonny Quest." Thank you, sir!

Jonny Quest was one of my all time favorite cartoons as a child. Thanks so much for uploading it. I haven't watched it in over 40 years. :-)
You need to get it on DVD, I have it and watch it quite often.

Tim Matheson...the actor that voiced Jonny Quest is still around...thanks Tim and all those with HB that make this magnificent piece of Americana possible.
He became a gynlosical doc in Beverly Hills. Spelling sucks. He checked out snappers. Sorry, that was Eric Stratton.
I like this cartoon since my childhood days.
thanks ! An effort worthy of the show. Jonny Quest lives !
MARVELOUS ! Simply genius ! Thank you for posting
I keep coming back to this documentary every 6 months or so. It's epic. This should have 12 million views! 👍

ANY Anderson production is head and shoulders above American animation with the exception of......Jonny Quest.
Driven by the Hanna-Barbera Building numerous times and Jonny Quest series always comes to mind.

The Dragons Of Ashida.
Very good episode!
Fantastic piece. I've only watched the first part. Great documentary making. I could watch the stills with the track music all day long.
This is a great documentary of one of my favorite shows, there are times I'd love to jump in the scenes and be with them in their adventures

There are a lot of good shows today Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, etc but none as epic as JQ
I'm 70 . I still love Jonny Quest...I've written alot of fan Fiction when I was years younger. And expanded some.
This was absolutely wonderful! Thank you for allowing me to be a kid again for a while!
I canot believe only 3500 people have watched this. The best cartoon ever made and hthis documentary is pretty good too, damn fine work ron Vail!

Just as well. Today's hollywokeness would trash any reboot / revisioning and trash the legacy of the original show as well.
I doubt they're capable of doing it

This was the coolest cartoon show ever! I never know this show was from the 60's. I watched Johny Quest in the late 70's and it seem like a new show.
A tremendous effort and a heck of a lot of work, packed with tons of great info. Thanks so much for doing this!

I completely & utterly CONCUR & AGREE!

Perhaps a face-to- face meeting between. Benton and Dr. Zin!

A great documentary on the best action cartoon ever made.
This documentary is fabulous!
Thank you, from one fan to another!

Thank you!
HB's greatest work.
we are old,but man i loved Jonny Quest
Fabulous ! Thank you !
Thank you so much for this wonderful doc. I enjoyed it a lot.
Great job I really enjoyed this documentary
thank you so much for these. fantastic.
Release this stuff on DVD, three or four episodes per disk......................and I WILL BUY IT !
Nasher188- You can get the entire series at Walmart for like forty bucks. Quite a savings. When it first came out, I spent a hundred dollars buying it from Columbia House.
Along with Speed Racer, Spiderman, Fantastic Voyage the best cartoons ever. Period! Action cartoons. Forgot Scooby Doo!
This is brilliant story telling
¡Feliz 50º aniversario de Jonny Quest! 18 set 1964 --- 18 set 2014! ¡Felicitaciones a Chris Webber por la producción de excelente documental y a Ron Vail por subirlo a youtube!!
hey! that was 2 days after my 8th birthday! it WAS a good year eh?
¡Sí, sí que fue un buen año! ¡Mis saludos cordiales a usted!
+John doe I agree, up there with Star Trek TOS and maybe better because it was closer to modernday life.
SEE MY COMMENT ABOVE...YES THIS WAS A VERY INTELLIGENT SHOW FOR KIDS WHO THOUGHT OUTSIDE THE BOX...AND NOT JUST LIKING SILLY AZZ CARTOONS...
never was there a man under the monster suit of this show lol your thinking of scooby doo
LOL- I know, RIGHT?
Fantastic job on this…a true labor of love.
This is awesome! Thanks for your hard work!
Brilliant docu!!
Great show. I loved it as a kid.
Amazing and in depth documentary to be sure! Thanks for uploading,RV(p.s. love that Ernie Kovacs avatar!).
Hello from Canada. Astonishingly good documentary. First rate. By the way, the music in the HB productions contributed immensely to the personality and success of their shows.
Oh, this is great, I used to love this show!
Amazing!
because they are NOT worth talking about. this ONLY ran 1 season from 64-65 and is STILL groundbreaking, and still they feel it was not as good as it could have been because ABC would not give them the budget that they really needed.ABC's reason for that, was that "JQ" wasn't getting half the ratings as the 'Flintstones" which cost $65,000 per episode. "JQ" would cost more per episode.ABC treated it like NBC treated "Star Trek" a expensive money loser. "JQ"was too FAR AHEAD of it's time.
