- Come explore Glass Beach in the small town of Fort Bragg, California. Glass Beach, California is a true trash to treasure story. In the 1900s, trash were dumped directing into the ocean in Fort Bragg. There were three dump sites. Over the years, the ocean turned ordinary glasses into beautiful sea glasses. Glass Beach is located on the beautiful and rugged Mendocino Coast.

This is horrible. People used this place as a dump, nature turned it into a masterpiece, then people took it away again. Who knows if a place could ever be so beautiful again?
Yeah, sadly that is how people are.
I remember going to glass beach before it became so famous and there was so much colorful glass. I returned about 10 years later and most of it is now gone as the video shows. The beach itself is still magnificent despite this. Its sad to see the place lose some of its historical wonder but at the same time the glass was never a part of the natural environment so in a cosmic way people are cleaning up the mess left behind from the 1800s. I suppose we could start chucking bottles in the ocean for future generations to enjoy there is a fantastic brewery really close to the beach hahaha
@@jackbranson2602 Yeah, each time I returned, the sea glasses got smaller and smaller. I agree, the Mendocino Coast is still a beautiful area.

i used to live in cali and my papa used to take us every year to glass beach for the weekend i went to visit my dad last year and asked him to go and he said its just not worth it anymore. 😢 it was so sad but i had to see it for myself, i was devastated because of how precious that place was to me after my papa passed away.
@@arielasteiner7801 Yeah, definitely not the same as it used to be. Every time I visit, there are less and less glass.
I find that what is sad is the fact that the glass is there in the first place because of the people dumping waiste into the ocean.
@@bethschmidt1821 Yeah, back them there were no regulation and some coastal towns would dump trash straight into the ocean.
We visited Glass Beach a few years ago and there was very little glass there. As you approached the trail down to the beach there were two guys with five gallon buckets of glass they’d collected and they were trying to sell it to you. So disappointing. Despite the lack of glass, the waves were beautiful, sea birds posed for pictures and the air was fresh and clean.
Oooh, this is sooo sad 😔. At least, people could have have taken a piece or two as a souvenir, but huge bags or buckets...for sure there is barely nothing left. I would have loved though to see that beach 60 years ago!
I'm a local. Born and raised. And it's very frustrating that the glass is gone. And for future reference this place is not open to the public unless you're staying on the trail. We're trying to preserve it but tourists have made it a point to visit JUST FOR THIS GLASS

I don't think people are taking the glass, I think the waves are crushing it into smaller pieces. How much glass can one person carry out of there anyway?

I live in Southern California. And yes, you’re correct. Occasionally you’ll find a small piece of glass but what a treasure trove.❤

Ruined it? The people trashed this place for decades. It probably smelled horrible for miles in all direction. It’s a good thing our planet heals itself, and this is proof of it. The churning of the waves has been pulverizing what’s left of the garbage, the glass. Sure, humans have helped themselves to the larger pieces, but tat is a small amount compared to all that has been ground up to to pieces as small as grains of sand.
LOL it was ruined the second humans dumped trash in it. As much as I love sea glass there should be zero signs of humans on our beaches

People was like Let’s dump the garbage there. Mother Nature have an idea to recycle and turn the garbages to a pebble sand. Then people sees it turned to beautiful then steal and ruin it.

This place demonstrates how nature can heal just about anything. Garbage underwent a sea change into something beautiful, and the pieces got smaller and smaller until they were basically gone. It wasn't all carted away.
If you want it to look like it did before, you would have to start dumping glass bottles there and wait for the waves to do their thing again. It was a transitory thing unlikely to ever be repeated, at least not in the US with the environmental regulations.
What a great video. Thanks for going to the trouble to make this video. I live in Portland, Oregon, & will likely never get a chance to see Glass Pebble Beach. Even with the bigger pieces gone, the glass bits are still so pretty.

In the 1800s, when people didn't respect the ocean or worry about the environment, they used the cliff outside of town as a dump. There's no point in pointing fingers anymore. Everything is gone except glass, which is getting smaller by agitation from the waves and scavenging. I found some watch parts once.
It's nice back then the people had more glass waste than plastic waste.
This circle is funny in a way....people dump trash and nature turn into beautiful amazing things then people pick up their trash....God doing what He does best. God bless everyone and everything.

I came here when I was four with my family, so around 20 years ago. Definitely remember more glass. Shame it's not open to the public anymore, apparently. Good memories, though at least I still have pictures of that time.

Wow when I was a child in the early 90s there were tons of glass still all about the size of a half dollar and bigger

I kept seeing pictures or advertisements for this beach, was hoping to get some beautiful shots if I ever visited, but damn... this seriously disappoints me that it's just a plain beach now.

I think it's actually better for the beaches to look clean, yeah sea glass is cool, but it isn't from the sea, it's man made and then it was eroded by the ocean and spit back onto the beach. Little treasures here and there are cool, but it's better for a beach to look clean and natural. IMHO.

Hello World... sorry to say but please don't pick up these beautiful sea glasses... I really wondered how this place used to look like before and what it has become now... I have not visited California yet but will definitely come to explore beautiful places like this in America...
The beach used to be filled with large pieces of sea glasses. You can still see the images on a Google search.

Sadly most of the TH-cam Shorts and Instagram Reels are just CGI and not real.
What they could do is have a massive glass bottle drive. And then the city could dump thousands of tonnes of glass bottles in the surf and replenish this unnatural wonder. Of course they would have to warn bathers to wear shoes for the first few days until the glass got rounded up and no longer posed a threat to people's feet.
Yeah, that would definitely replenish the sea glass, but it would take 20-50 years for them to be sea glass smooth.

@@nomadicmonkey I dunno...I've seen people make artificial beach glass in a cement mixer and it only takes them half a day to get it smooth. Or smoothish.

People need to use their head if you see something on a beach or anywhere for that matter and you think I'll just take one imagine you taking one the next person taking one somebody else we can take two or three because they're not going to even think about taking one it goes on and is really disappointing to people that haven't seen it or experienced it then you think about the tourism now that little town doesn't get many tourists. This is why indigenous people put guardians and curses on their sacred lands bc respect is lacking when there is no punishment there's no respect.

This is Glass Beach and it is real. Glass Pebble Beach on Instagram, TikTok, or TH-cam Shorts are usually just CGI videos with random beaches with fake sea glasses.

You are not suppose to take the glass because it is in a state park, but people ignored the posted sign 🪧.
So sad because this place looks more like a landfill than a pretty natural wonder.
If it’s this bad, idk why no one’s gotten the idea of guarding the beach completely making it only accessible via a nature guide with the park. And maybe a metal detector for people leaving the beach reserve to check for stones. Leaving it to do not touch stones is just stupid and too trusting.

Yes, people are always looking for certain colors digging in the sand.
Oneday all the glass sand beach they'll all begone. They leave the white glass, Nobody listens & do whatever they want. Sea glass can be made in rock polishers 24hrs, so if they want they can re-make it & 40yrs. Less then 24hrs
Whats sad is that it was used as a dump to begin with. sure the tide rolling all the trash around for decades made the glass look pretty but its disgusting that we decided it was okay to just throw all the trash in the ocean to begin with. Ive been there twice now and there is huge unnatural piles of solidified garbage with all sorts or trash metal pieces and glass stick out everywhere. In one of the pools i saw today the water looked tanted. I thing its best for the environment that we take back the garbage we threw in there. Up in eureka along the rocky coast toy can find all sorts of star fish and crabs galore. But its definitely harder to find the natual sea life on these rocks.
How to save these beautiful places from us...

People take the glass, get home, and realize that owning a bucket of glass beads is worthless, toss it in the garbage. I could see taking one bead, I probably would. People are redicoulas. It's harder and harder to find places that haven't been disrespectially ruined by people's lack of respect and/or greed.
