@@kimgrantphotography hi Kim thanks for this super video that is also pedagogical. I am a university instructor but my photography and videography interest and skills (from a very low level imho) exploded during the pandemic. When you did the recap I thought, exactly how I would do it after a lecture, recap some of the key points towards the end. Cheers! With regard to air quality this of course is generally the case...but...just like clouds can be at different levels the same can be said of air quality. Consider the fantastic sunsets we can sometimes get when volcanic ash is in the upper part of the troposphere but the air is much clearer in the lower part of the troposphere. Says the environmental studies lecturer. I use the clear outside app since it provides forecasts in tabular form which I prefer.
Thank you so much for sharing this information Kim. I'm brand new to landscape photography and hope this information will save me a lot of wasted time when hoping to capture my first sunset image at the beach.
Great video. I didn't realize how much I knew from just considering these factors. I did not realize lower humidity was a factor. Sometimes a sunset is all set up for a beauty and at the last minute the curtain closes. Heading to laguna Beach tonight. Looks promising
Thank you for improving my chances of getting better colour in the sky. I had fair idea, (a bit of hit or miss) but you just made me a little more aware how to get it right.
Another informative video from you Kim,. Could you do one on how to take photos when looking at the sun in sunsets/sunrise. I always look forward to your new videos. Keep up the good work 😃😃
Thanks for the useful tips. I usually use instinct, living near the coast, but it is good to know that one can predict a good sunset to some extent. It is always good to see a new video from you!
Thank you Janet. I feel similar to you. I can usually tell when it's going to happen. It can take years of looking at the sky and feeling the weather to learn this. I enjoyed learning more about the process making this video though. It helps put those intuitive knowings together with the science.
Thanks Kim, just downloaded one of the apps, I had worked out some stuff myself but didn't know about the humidity which makes sense because here we are very dry in summer and that is when we get good sunsets.
Very much so - just reversed and you don't have the luxury of watching the clouds in the hours leading up to a sunrise. There can be a few differences though which I may cover in a future video.
Great job Kim, much more detail than I have seen in similar videos, I was recently featured here in Canada on the Weather Network, I think this video would make awesome content on one of the UK weather channels, just a thought. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you John. I am working on a new series of videos like this. Not only is it great for teaching what I know but I am learning a lot about the science behind nature, weather etc too to help bring more knowledge to both myself and anyone that's kind enough to watch :)
Great tips thanks, does pressure have an effect also? Under high pressure it is usually sunnier and may produce better conditions for sunsets, including lower humidity.
Yes - from what I've read the pressure makes up all the factors I've mentioned. With high pressure you get sunnier more settled weather and low pressure brings with rain and wind. I imagine somewhere between the changes in the pressure works best for sunsets. If it's been high for a few days, you've got little cloud to add interest and little breeze to clear the air but low pressure can have too much cloud. Changing weather usually brings the best light so if you see the pressure changing, that should be a good time to head out.
That's fine Bob. I've mentored people who are interested in all subjects and genres of photography. If you'd like to discuss further, please email me: kim@visualisingscotland.co.uk
I’ve lived on the west coast all my life and just know when there’s going to be a good sunset. However I never know about a good sunrise so will have to download one of those apps mentioned
Great tips Kim! I knew a couple already but I never considered humidity. We've been in a prolonged lockdown where I live (thank you Delta variant😠) but look forward to putting these tips into practice when we can travel more freely again
How do you take a good photo off a rainbow as I like taking photos off rainbow's but I can never get the hole rainbow in the shot mind I do use my phone I don't have a nice camera that you have lol.
If you want the whole rainbow in shot, you really need a wide angle lens. I think some phone may have a wide angle mode but I am not sure. You can get great shots with just half a rainbow though :)
When filming the sunsets where I live, I've started using a Tiffin Pro Mist filter to get an interesting glow. Have you ever considered something similar for video rather than photos?
All you have to do is watch nd see if they are spraying chemtrails, this is the reason we are having so many dramatic sunsets !!!Look at this girls video it is all chemtrails...
Really enjoyed your video, lots of helpful information.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it :)
What a great video. Coast line is where the best sunsets are
They are sure Paul :)
Wonderful stuff Kim! Thanks so much!
Good review. It put ideas I sort of knew together and in context.
Nice video with great information Kim.👌👌
Great information that I did not know. Thank you.
Good advice, thanks Kim
Very good video. I don't know if it just comes naturally to you or if you studied teaching methods at university but you are a very good teacher.
That is very kind Jeff. I haven't done any teacher studying or training :)

You're very welcome Wendy
Another interesting video Kim.
Thanks for the great tips.
Look forward to the next one.
Really useful tips, there should be a weather app for photographers sending alerts on perfect conditions.
Glad you found them useful :)
Nice surprise video. Most helpful info. thanks for sharing Kim.

Thanks Kim for the awesome tips, and gorgeous sunsets.

Great tips Kim. Now if only I lived by a coast but I do live near a great lake so not all is lost.
Lakes are great! Perfect for reflections :)
Thank you so much Kim, this is very helpful information!
Good tips 😊

I'm really glad I watched your video Kim, and really glad that I appear to be using one of the right Apps for the job.. Acuweather!
YAY! :)
Thank you Kim for these explanations,. Are your explanations valid and applicable also for photographing sunrises?
Very much so - just reversed and you don't have the luxury of watching the clouds in the hours leading up to a sunrise. There can be a few differences though which I may cover in a future video.

@@kimgrantphotography Kim, the first few of your new series of videos have been excellent. I look forward to seeing the others.
Very scientific - I just pick a day on the weekend when my family is willing to let me go..... And then I get what I get.

I am kind of interested in your mentoring, but I want to focus on woodland and some landscape.

It's amazing how you just know when you're out there a lot and learn to read the light. It's gets easier the more you look out for it :)

A really wet day can produce the best sunsets if the weather forecast predicts a sunny morning will follow the next day.
When filming the sunsets where I live, I've started using a Tiffin Pro Mist filter to get an interesting glow.
Have you ever considered something similar for video rather than photos?
👍😎
So what do you consider max wind to be out in for Sunrise/Sunset photography?
A sunny day that doesn't end with a sunset, will normally produce the best sunrise the following morning.
Red sky at night shepherd's delight Red sky in the morning shepherd's worning.lol
