You belong on that track just as much as anyone else there, the knowledge you have imparted via your TH-cam channel has not only improved the riding experience for many of your viewers but also saved many lives I am sure. Some of those other guys could only dream as being as influential as yourself. Keep up the great work Dave what you're doing is important and I tell as many of my biker friends as possible to watch your lessons.
Coming from the sportbike world, I picked up a 125cc (Papio SS, Styling has me😍😍) and honestly thebonly complaint I have is not being able to ride comfortably on highway. (Tops out at like 65MPH) In America its really hard to leave town without them. BUT. Just cruising around the neighborhood, taking the bike into smaller areas, or trails I wouldn't take the bike bikes on, and learning to stunt without risk of dying. Has honestly made the mini bike world just as, if not more fun than "Canyon Chasing". I can rip the whole trottle without breaking the speed limit. Teach my friends how to ride very easily without hurting them. Overall just a super fun bike, its honestly just a bicycle with a motor. I personally still need a bigger bike just for longer trips. But most people would have the time of their lives on a Grom/other 125cc.
you definitely deserved the invite man, your coaching has improved our riding and took it to a whole new level. This is the best channel to learn about riding.
My wife and I both bought a Z125, comparable to the Grom. We rode it here and there. She even had hers customized with rear sets and anodized the rims, footpegs, levers etc. It was fun, but there's some pretty serious limitations out on the open road that made them less fun if I'm being honest. If you live someplace with 30 mph roads, that people *_actually_* do the speed limit, I think they would be fine. Around here, speed limit signs are ignored as much as BMW owners and turn signal levers. We ended up selling them, but we did okay on that end too.
You're hands down my favourite riding channel. And it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast, than a fast bike slow. So this makes it the perfect video :)
Man this is the first video of yours I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve been subscribed for over a year. Don’t know why none of your videos have been showing up on my feed. Now I’ve gotta go back and watch all the ones I missed.
We've had several ZPros (Kasawaski's Grom) in this family (a dad and 3 adult boys who ride) and no matter how many times we sell them, we end up getting another in the near future. Maybe we should just keep one. They are awesomely fun!
Thats a great analogy. Maybe I should hijack the Miata saying "there are only two kinds of riders; those who want a Grom, and those who don't know they want a Grom."
I have 2 bikes, a 2024 Honda grom and a 2024 Kawasaki ninja 500 se 40th anniversary abs. Both bikes are fun. The from makes me feel like a kid again and the got the ninja 40th anniversary as a replacement for my wrecked ninja 400. Plus I loved the 90’s paint scheme.
I LOVE racing minis and have raced a Z125 at the proving grounds and done the endurance! Racing minis is its own unique kind of good time in the same way that racing go karts is always a blast even if you are a big hypersport car guy. Depending on the config you can keep a 125 wide open for 3/4 of the proving grounds. That was a big aha moment for me and lead me to really examining how much I needed to let off throttle for certain turns on the big bike. Some turns need a little roll off, some need a lot but as they say in YCS "The throttle is a dimmer not a switch!" because there are a lot of turns that don't need roll off at all! There's a ton of nuance to that but it dropped my lap times a lot by looking at a track config and really critically asking how much do I need to roll off for this turn for this bike at this speed/gear/point in the rev range.
Thanks for the time an effort in to making entertaining top notch videos. My 15 year old daughter has been asking about riding motorcycles, and I have been wondering if a Grom would be a place for her to start at, a bike that will be good to take her through her first few years.
Finally someone mentioning what honda has done with the horn and signals position. All motorcycles for the past 100 years have agreed to that, but no, Honda just has yo be different. And not in a good or useful way. Random info: Grom's name in Europe is MSX and it costs 3.900$USD
Dave, you are MOST DEFINITELY not out of your league there! Your humility is quite admirable, though. I laughed myself to tears when you shared about canceling your turn signal instead of honking the horn. I about fell out of my chair. Sounds like me on my Gold Wing trying to enable the cruise control only to find out over and over again that the starter doesn't engage while riding, but it also doesn't engage the cruise control. My buddy had a Grom. He's an engineer and tricked out his Grom to get the best speed and performance out of it. He got it to top out at 84 MPH, and I believe he did some suspension work on it as well. He sold it after taking on a new job, but I suspect he'll get another one. For now, he bought himself a new Suzuki GSX-8R and has already modded it. He also brought it down to Traxxion Dynamics to have the suspension upgraded as well. It's a sweet ride!
GREAT video! Groms are the perfect tool to fine tune riding skills. Their super light weight magnifies every control input and body weight adjustment, demanding you become a smooth rider. Those skills carry over to my other bikes on the street and track. Join the Grom forums and you will learn what essential mods you need for the best experience. Pre 2020 Grom with a big bore kit (180 CC kitaco neo) , aRacer ecu with wideband AFR, oil cooler, aftermarket intake and exhaust, Racing Bros suspension front and rear, sintered brake pads, BST wheels. Like an Ohvale that is street legal. I lead liter bikes on tight twisty mountain roads on my Grom. If I could only have one bike, ( and I have many including 400, 600, 1000cc class bikes plus an Energica) it would be the Grom.
Groms are very charming. But a lot of what you said also goes for the Hunter 350, which has a lot more power for not even twice the money. It's enough of a compromise that it's both a Grom and secondary motir rolled into one commuter bike that looks like a small Bonneville. Of course im biased, but a honest good and practical bike doesn't need to cost a lot. The smaller to intermediate form factors are a lot of fun.
Another great video mate. I'm seriously considering a Monkey or a Grom. I took the Multistrada to the IOM TT this year. I was on the unrestricted mountain section with the Limiter on the back of the bike (Mrs Gears) and we were enjoying a leisurely ride up the mountain road (which is one-way at TT times) and I was passed on my left by a Honda Monkey and on the right by a Honda Grom. Both riders with their chins on the tank, grinning from ear to ear!!! I gave them an approving nod as they slowly went by and we toodled along. 😂👍 (Just for clarification, there were no other such incidents the 2nd time I went round the course, when Mrs Gears WASN'T on the back!) 😬👍 Slainte!!! 🏴
in areas with a large motorcycle community the Grom makes more sense because of it's naturally goofy nature but where I am, basically a suburb of Toronto, there really isn't that large a group or culture of riding so when you do see one, you wave like you would any normal bike but you are not going to be invited to bike-nights and not going to be invited out on rides. I think the cb300r is just that much more of a full bike experience and will do highway speeds all day making it that much more practical while being lighter or weigh the same as most dual-sports.
Many folks west of that big river don't realize the roads we have east of that river - with the exception of NC & TN cuz everyone knows about those states with regards to riding. I live in SW PA and have easy access to awesome twisty and winding roads in PA, SE Ohio (look up OH-26), WV, and VA.
Thought about a grom for my missus and my daughter to learn on. Ended up with an MT03 because the price difference just made the mt03 a more sensible purchase
Awesome! I love them and would absolutely own one if not for being 6'4" and 300lb. Small is ok, but there's a point where you just can't really ride it.
Very true! You and I have opposite problems. There's an entire slew of really cool bikes that are just completely impractical for me to own. Last time I rode a KTM Adventure, I had to look for logs and curbs to stop next to so I could get my foot to the ground.
@@CanyonChasers hah in all seriousness, the KTM SA is a CHONKY boy. Even for me, while it was in no way too big, the bike is so wide it forces your legs uncomfortably far apart, making it's seat effectively much taller than it actually is. It feels *enormous* as a result, and is much harder to get your feet down than most bikes of its seat height.
No doubt a fun machine, but didn't you say the ones you rode were prepped with Ohlins suspension for racing? Did you ride & evaluate one with stock suspension, too?
I spent part of the second day on the Monkey bike and I too am very torn. The monkey bike is even more charming than the Grom, but the Grom handles a wee bit better. It's not an easy decision.
its... overrated... Air filter and front fork spring changes is a nightmare. NGL given the current specs it should be max 3K USD. or 190CC + 6 speed. PS. the horn / indicator button is indication of the "neo honduh" design ethos , which imho is extreemly retarded. same shit on the hornet 750/ transalp. PS2. i own a really old honda and the horn / indicators is... in the right place. and it has 6 speed. gonna ride it till the end of time. not buying the new honduhs.

Thats so frustrating, right? You're not the only person who has been telling me this.
the grom was the bike that i learned on in my basic rider course! it was so much fun. i was so short i looked actually very normal on the grom, lol.

Mini motos are just fun as hell. Got a great deal on a z125pro and a few mods later I just have a huge smile every time I ride
I did the PA MSF course on one. Felt like cheating. It’s the Miata of the motorcycle world.
lol, while watching this that's all I could think about. "This sounds like driving my miata". Slow bike fast!
Thats a great analogy. Maybe I should hijack the Miata saying "there are only two kinds of riders; those who want a Grom, and those who don't know they want a Grom."

The weather that race weekend was insane. How fun.
I'm glad it wasn't crazy hot! Alabama heat is a lot more intense than Utah heat.

Just don't rob it from her too often for your own "testing" 😎
Fun video. My wee little bike is a 1970 Honda CL100. Riding small bikes fast is a giggle.

MSX is cooler sounding than Grom. Although I learned that Grom is australian/NZ slang for "Promising young surfer"

Yes. The one I rode for the second half of the video was bone stock.
