One of the best headphones ever made. After hearing most of the high end headphones and owning multiple ones. These headphones are a worthy king and a worthy successor to the R10.
In typical Sony "Hi-Res Audio" fashion, these headphones can produce frequencies all the way up to 120 kHz! Now I can finally listen to the ultrasonic frequencies from ripped SACDs and experience what the artist truly intended for me to hear...because I totally have ultrasonic hearing.
I think you're missing the point. Reaching 120khz is a way of making sure there is no roll off at 20khz. It also probably gives you an idea of how DYNAMIC the driver is when compared to a normal one. It's called overhead.
Tried this at an expo, sounded great... my biggest concern is the housing that is practically made out of fancy paper. How will that hold up in the long run?
The last MDR-Z7 was only $700 and those were made in Japan too. If they can price this at $600-650, they will dominate the high end market. At $700 it won't destroy most consumer audiophiles' pockets either.
MDR-Z7 is considered at a different class to these MDR-Z1R. at that price they wouldn't have put as much effort into them. Would be nice...but it aint gonna happen.

lol what? The Material of the driver alone is more expensive. And you do know that these are Hand Made in Japan? The labor cost for assembling just one single Headphone is way beyond 50$ already. These are not 2200$ headphones, that is true but they are not 50$ headphones either. I guess Sony could sell these for roughly 1600$ but not much less without making a loss
Hi my friend, I think your not into the audio systems or an audio purist I'll explain why it is the way it is. All headphones consist of two channels left and right, when a company claims 7.1 or whatever it basically implies that they are simulating surround sound through 2 channel, it's not a real surround sound solution. Very popular among gaming headsets which have very average or flat out bad quality drivers in nearly all technical aspects. Now a technically high end driver doesn't require any gimmicks to sound natural with sounds being placed distinctively and the ability to handle complex tracks or audio playback smoothly due to driver speed ,timbre ,and transient response. So all in all a 7.1 system can only be implemented through speakers. Saying that a high end headphone can produce nearly the same experience due to its superior driver abilities. A stereo headphone like the sennheiser hd650 can run circles around any headset claiming 7.1 surround sound, cause it's a marketing gimmick.

They are. They're certainly more comfortable. The sound signature is similar, but improved in every frequency area.
