  • The statement "Genealogy is History and History is Genealogy" is meant to emphasize the need to know that trying to do genealogy without knowing the history is like trying to fly without wings. There is a lack of historical awareness abundantly evident from many online family trees, including much of the FamilySearch Family Tree. As we build our own part of the world's family tree, this class explains why knowing the context of the history of our ancestors avoids drifting off into never never land.

    Great insight! As I research my 2nd great grandfather (LRFH-1KT), I find a lot of conflicting information. He lived in Pennsylvania, moved to Sparta, IL for some reason about 1896. I know ZERO about the history of either location. So, you empowered me to get a working on that. Things I am looking to glean: born in the US (or travel over as a child), why did he move to Illinois, doesn't seem to have his job at the next location (at least the railroad), how does the 1/2 brother fit and his side of the family.
