How to clean aluminum relics with oxalic acid?

I used oxalic acid as a two step process for cleaning steel. I use muriatic acid (HCl acid) as the first step for heavily rusted parts and then the oxalic as the second step will give a nice phosphate coating similar to phosphoric acid that will prevent flash rusting and provides a good etch for paint to stick to.
