I found the new concept in which the Berlin Philarmonic performed this piece quite peculiar (in a good way). It seems to me that this orchestra has remained to be one of the finest and most renowned in the world and their undertaking of publishing their work on TH-cam and on the internet will surely leave a cultural mark on the new generations that rely on those means so heavily. Thank you, Berlin Philharmonic, for keeping the torch of classical music lit and alive in the world.
I've just seen the full piece and It is really moving, the "ritualization" is awesome, ¡human! touching, spiritual...but specially the Rattle's version is really really good, the performance is incredible, the singers..the kids. Well, I'm exhausted. Thanks a lot.
Well done Berlin Philharmonic! I'm still longing to experience once of your Christmas concerts LIVE! Gosh...I can't wait! Greetings from the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean! Your fans are EVERYWHERE! :)
What a great idea I had to subscribe to the digital concert hall. From the beginning of 2014 Iam having the opportunity of listening to great music marvellously interpreted. And now it was a deep and moving experience to see in my seclusion the beautifully, breathtaking staged version of Matthäus Passion by Berliner Philharmoniker, Sir Simon, Sellars and the choirs lead by Master Halsey. What a depth of feeling, what grandeur achieved, enhanced by a dignified interpretation by all artists envolved. Thanks so much, Berliners. Antonio Noronha
Very impressive getting all the singers to perform from memory, I suppose it is easier for them with it being their native tongue but all the same, most impressive.
I had the pleasure of singing with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker a couple of years ago (in the boy's choir), and this man is insanely skilled. Even though there were over 300 people playing, he knew exactly when we were supposed to sing and was able to conduct us perfectly. Combined with the best orchestra in the world, it was absolutely awesome! And he's really nice, too! :-)
I just got the 2-DVD set from the Berlin Philharmonic website. It has the option for subtitles in English. And you can watch it on something more convenient than your computer.
Since this piece is probably the highest point and most beautiful creation of Western Civilization (maybe it will convince the aliens not to kill us all), I have to say I am very much struck by the involvement of the singers. It does add a dimension that wasn't there before and seems very touching to me (at least what little I saw). I am tempted to shell out to hear the whole piece.
Ulrich Tulp I think you make some very good points. The instruments Bach's music is played on has changed hugely since his days, when I played classical guitar I used to play his violin, lute and cello pieces on an instrument that did not exist in his days. It's just, for me, Rattle for some reason is representative of the 'iPod' generation - innovation for the sake of innovation.
hmmm....doesn't Sellars say something about "stiffness" that he wanted to avoid it? so why do so many of the singers look stiff and ill at ease. A nice idea, but it might have worked better with people who actually lived and breathed the music.
This comment seems ill-informed, and apparently based on A) only watching this short clip, B) not understanding the subject of what is being sung about. Of COURSE the singer's here look uncomfortable.....this supports the lyrics. Watch more of this and you will see a lot more variation in the staging as the mood requires.

This gets better every time I hear it.
A lot of people say this was his best piece.
Stunning. I need to figure out how to run my computer through my stereo and then subscribe. I really love what Rattle has done with the Orchestra.

I join you. Thanks Berliner and Digital Hall.
I very much like this performance, it is real , live , 3D , as if I can touch Bach's music. This is how Art has to move on. Thank you for sharing.
This is the best I have seen on TH-cam.
this is an unusal performance and I like it. Sir S R does things differently and it works. Just love the sound. Beautiful!!
Outstanding.
Simply incredible. Angels singing on Earth!
Reminds me of our head of Music Department... Prof Lamprecht... May His beautiful soul rest in eternal peace. ❤️🙏

Wunderschöne.
Peter Sellers is peculiar, but usually interesting in his staging (which he is here). Of course, the BPO & Chorus, et al. are all excellent.
Wonderful performance! The 360 degrees setting seems to be engaging. I wonder how it feels to be in the audience watching this.
Wonderful!

INDESCRIPTIBLE... SIMPLEMENTE SUBLIME!
Sir Simon allein schon ein Genuss, und Bachs Passion.Der Himmel auf Erden.
OMG
I bough the DVD blue ray,, its amazing!!
I loved this - I'd love to see something similar with Messiah.
@karateko It is the opening chorus "Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen".
beautiful :-D
wonder of wonders! they are coming to the Proms 2014 in London to perform this - I will bring a box of tissues with me!
Fully Agreed!
Very beautiful excerpt. And "the evangelist" Mark Padmore is just sitting there... waiting to tell the strange story... I like that.
Maravilhoso
@lejoe48 Just make a request, English subtitles for the full piece, please.

Phenomenal performance although I do think the tempo is a bit too fast and off at some parts
bravíssimo!
In the name of Jesus. To God alone the glory
was this ever recorded for CD?
@Arminiushoff :-)
Jag rös!!!!
Wwwwwwoooooooowwwwww
I have a question did Bach write this as a praise to God? I
It is perhaps something new and surprising at the first listening but the next ones must be very boring to watch. Not for me!
baroque
nehmen wa
Eindrücklich wie alles von Rattle
Ridiculous pretentious theatrics - trying to outdo J S Bach is a sign of a huge ego!
jagara1
right.... destroying of Bach and music
