Thank you for your passionate statement on why Confederate soldiers fought. I have 2 relatives on my Mom's side that fought with Hood. One lost his lower arm. Neither one ever owned a slave and didn't like it. They fought because their fellow Texians were going to fight.

Regardless of their personal feelings they were fighting to preserve slavery. All the nonsense about "state's rights" is just that, nonsense. The one and only thing that allowed southern states to mouth such gibberish (state's rights) was the complete and brutal subjugation of one race by another. Cheers!
This war was indeed about slavery - and a whole lot more. A close inspection of the industrial revolution, the economic situation before and after the war, the banking situation before and after the war, as well as the labor situation before and after will illuminate much for those who care to understand this tragic and complex event in a more holistic perspective.
My Great-Great Grandfather served in the 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 1861-64. He was at the battle of Gettysburg and managed to survive the war without any wounds or major illness. He was very fortunate, many of his comrades weren't so lucky.

Couldn't be there today, but I did what I could: I paid my respects to Major General John Reynolds at his grave in Lancaster at 10:30am, around the time he fell in Gettysburg, 160 years ago today.

Great presentation! So glad to hear more about Archer's Bgd. They are often just written off as the unit that was routed by the Iron Bgd but they went up to The Angle on July 3rd.

Enjoyed Sarah's 150th Pennsylvania post-war quote. It's certainly a very deep reflection on all wars and the sacrifice that the soldiers make. At what cost do we wage war? And was it worth the many sacrifices and lives that it cost?

Thank you. Perhaps one day you could talk about the fight at Harmon's Farm. The Seminary Museum is a wonderful place to visit. There is a log in one of the rooms that lists many of those soldiers who were treated there. One was George Pells, 20th NYSM. I found him in the log book. He survived his wound, transferred to the VRC and spent the rest of his life in his home town, taking folks out to fish, or just go boating on the river.

An Ancestor of mine served in Company F 24th Michigan Infantry Regiment and was seriously wounded on July 1,1863 at Gettysburg. His name was Corporal Levi Freeman who is a distant cousin. He survived his wounding and lived into the 20th Century.
Company K of the 7th Tennessee were known as 'The Blues'.
I'm in the UK always been fasinated with the civil war. Been to Gettysburg some years ago along with a few other battlefields, my cousin who lives there used to live nearby
I'm questioning the description of the 150th Regiment PA Vol as "Bucktails". The Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg names Colonel Roy Stone and Lt Walton Dwight with the 149th Regiment. And I've read they were also "Bucktails". Officially designated the 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, the unit was also known as the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, the 1st Pennsylvania Rifles, and the Kane Rifles. They originated in Kane, PA and Smethport, PA. The other "Bucktails" I've read about was the 149th Regiment, PA Vol.
Today is the anniversary of the first day of Gettysburg. Buford's cavalry managed to hold of Heth's division till Reynolds arrived. It was only one civilian who joined in the fight and that was John Burns.
My wife's g-g grandfather was wounded and later died, about a month later at Gettysburg .
War does not prove who is right nor wrong but who is left.

Many Southerners, both those already in the US Army and those who joined during the war went north to fight for the Union. That includes one of my Great-Great Grandfathers from Tennessee who's family owned slaves. It's called knowing right from wrong. Also, there is the matter of the Oath. Lee and others took an oath to the Constitution of the United States, not to a particular state. There has never been a proviso in the Oath that allowed them to turn their allegiance to the state they were born in. The Oath is to protect the Constitution against all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. There's a word for breaking that oath and that word is Treason.

Gary, you do history a disservice by oversimplifying the reason southern states seceded. Really? Just slavery? It was certainly a key issue, but not the only reason.
To say that "the" reason the South seceded was slavery is an insult to those who seceded who did not support slavery. The disagreement will go on, of course, but please understand that there were a number of reasons why Southerners no longer felt welcome in the United States. At any rate, thanks for telling stories of men on both sides. Far too many stories feature only the "glorious boys in blue." TWO armies fought and suffered there at Gettysburg. Let us honor the brave men of both sides.
Want to support y'all, but I am appalled at the lost cause mythology here. Yes, people do feel the same way about states' rights today, yes it's still a form of radical white supremacy, and yes, this man was fighting for slavery because that legal principal is enshrined in the CSA constitution up front and center: "No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed” (Article I, Section 9).

I'm loving this series for the 160th anniversary of the July 1-3 Battle Of Gettysburg. Great job with teaching all of us to never forget the bloodiest battle in history.

Like the misplacement of the marker where Reynolds was shot, author Earl Hess wrote in his book, 'Pickett's Charge', that the Armistead wounding marker on Cemetery Ridge is in the wrong place, too. At 11:24, where the man and the woman are standing, and where Garry is crossing, one map indicated that, after the fighting, a temporary burial ground was located there.
The Iron brigades arrive of the I corps under Gen John Reynolds, the first day's fighting is intense, Gracias Gary and crew, it is very interesting!
Another great video, I always appreciate Carol Reardon for her expertise and humanity. I remember once hearing her speak and recommending that if there is a convenient bench nearby standing on it and just changing your view by a few feet is a great way to get an idea of what an officer on horseback's view was like, Also appreciate Sarah's contribution. And Garry, a late vote for the strong Vincent look.

Great presentation. I own a piece of the Reynolds Tree. I received it as a plaque presented by the Town of Gettysburg to the commissioning crew of the ship. I am honored to own that piece of history

I have both sides of my family tree.
Ma side goes back to ppl who both came over on the Fortune (1623)
Da side only the male who came to VA in 1663
So both sides have multiplied a lot.
We did not do just these families but the families the Females married into.
All told ppl I am related to by blood 67 of them fought in the Civil War. Some south some north
At Gettysburg had just one on each side. Both on Ma's side.
Most fought in the west and then the deep south
Wish I could remember names but cant right now and the tree is so large it would take me hrs to find them
Its all great you guys do these videos...but warfare and the human psychological toll it takes on the participants is far beyond the mere movements of armies on the battlefield. It's barbarism at its core.
It is so sad that our country had to go through this and the people had to suffer that much.
And now some people want us to go through it again.
