Lift's motivations for going to Yeddaw weren't as simple as she pretended. She's that trope of the reluctant hero who just pretends to be in the right place at the right time. She went there not DESPITE Darkness being there, but in order to "steal his lunch." In other words, she knew he was going there to kill someone and she was trying to figure out who so she could save them. I thought her motivations and how they were presented were genius.

About the body horror crab guy. I've been having a blast rereading The Way of Kings and seeing all sorts of hints and foreshadowing. In chapter 54 when Wit is talking to Dalinar at the feast (right before he tells him that he also goes by the name Hoid) he says, "I wonder if you could do that to a man. Pull him apart, emotion by emotion, bit by bit, bloody chunk by bloody chunk. Then combine them back together into something else, like a Dysian Aimian."

Lift is awesome. This is an indisputable, canon fact.
Also, her motivations are a little deeper than just wanting pancakes. She is telling herself that she went for the pancakes, but she was actually seeking out Nale (aka Darkness)
I really enjoyed both novellas. Maybe Edgedancer had some problems, but... it's from Lift's POV. Makes it automatically an awesome book.
(Interestingly, I don't really like Lift all that much when seen from other people's POV. She is a menace to the people around her :D)

    • @kyle18934
      @kyle18934 ปีที่แล้ว +1

she reminds me of a kid with adhd. she has to see everything, touch everything and do everything. her motivations make sense to me, she was starved as an orphan, so food became a primary focus. people that were in bad situations that make food scarce tend to think about food quite a bit.
idk I find her the chaos that brings entertainment to serious situations. I tend to enjoy comedies though, so that explains it.

Lift is one of those characters that grows on you. At first she seems overtly plucky and a bit annoying, but thats why Wyndle is there to be the constantly sighing voice of reason (aka the reader). She doesn’t change or have much of an arc, if any, but by the time you finish Edgedancer you come to understand her a lot better.
So, in a way, Lift's wish is metacontextual. Her wish was to never grow, to never change. And despite that being the case, we can still see that she's more complex than she lets on, giving the illusion of change.

Thank you for giving some love to Edgedancer.
I like that book a lot. The video was really good.
    Great Job!
Just 2 points to add I think
    SPOILER WARNING
    1. Lift is a unreliable narrator
The things that she says must not be taken seriously.
She may say that she went to that city for pancakes or that she is looking for darkness to steal his food, but the true is that she found out that Darkness was there. So she is going there to confront him.
Well she enjoys the pancakes but is not the motivation.
    2. And the fact that the ability of transform food to stormlight is a unique ability that she has. Other radiants use gemstones infused with stormlight, but she can not do it.
The powers that she has as a radiant is abrasion, that allows her to change the friction of her body against her surroundings and Progession that allows for two different sorts of abilities. She can use Stormlight to increase the rate of growth of plants and Regrowth It allows Lift to heal others from serious injuries that would otherwise be fatal.

I agree that the motivations weren't clear for much of the book, but I think this was intentional as she was in the process of discovering them.

This vague motivation you mentioned, I'd say it is a conscience of Lift's perspective as well, when I got to the end of the book I had a feeling that she has some particular reasons for been there but she either was pushing it away and denies them, or just avoids to think about them, both of which could be rooted in her past. With Sanderson we only can guess until we see more, so that's just my opinion

Sanderson has written gross horrifying things before in the Mistborn series, but the Sleepless is the first time it pops up in the Stormlight Archive. So I have re-read Stormlight books 1-3 at least four times through and book 4 once before learning that Edgedancer was reccommended reading between books 2 and 3. My first and so far only readthrough of Edgedancer was overwhelmingly positive. I can definitely see OP's point on how someone in his specific position would have felt being told to read Edgedancer before Oathbringer tedious. For me it was like finding a new level when I'm on a completionist run for finding lore and it was fun :) I've always felt like Sanderson's dialogue from children sounds off and way too mature (not nsfw, I mean like full grown) but for the most part Lift sounds appropriately childlike for her age. (13?) I felt the familiar superpower wish fulfillment which is a hallmark of the cosmere, while also getting a single adventure novella that I felt had similar pacing to a graphic novel. I felt that crab dude scene was a near Lovecraftian horror and I LOVED it. From the beginning of my Edgedancer readthrough I felt lift was dishonest with her motives for travelling to Yeddaw, and I enjoyed her blatant and believable lie cover story of pancakes. So for me I didnt find her motives nor the plot boring. "Say it." "Your Pancakefulness."< That page had me dying laughing XD I'd leave an overwhelmingly positive review of the novella with my only note that the childrens' dialogue was still sometimes a bit too well worded and grown up for their age.

      It's really quite simple:
she's a loveable, goofy kid with magic powers who loves pancakes and is a fun break from the heavier themes and characters of the rest of the series. Not every character can be Kaladin or Dalinar.

Lift is great largely because she's an annoying cringy tween. Like it's super lame but I definitely would've called my special powers my awesomeness at her age.

I'm not really a fan of Lift. I find her to be pretty annoying
