    This one is so good. It's a very good analogy for the role of colonizing nations in the South Pacific, and the modern foundation plays a role very similar to what the US does in that region today.
    If you look at any controversial UN vote in which the US is in the minority opinion, you'll notice that several small island countries show up repeatedly: Togo, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Palau. These countries have all signed a treaty called the "Compact of Free Association", or COFA. The provisions are that the US must provide certain benefits to the island, most notably military aid... but in effect, this means that the US has an unregulated military presence there. There's no rule that says the COFA nations have to vote the same as the US in the UN, but... there doesn't really need to be a rule, if you know what I mean. Several other countries aren't part of COFA but benefit from US trade and vote similarly.
    To bring it back to the SCP article, all of these countries have a history of having European contact that was quickly followed by colonialism and "civilizing" missions. All of them have been passed around as colonies of different nations. And crucially, the Marshall Islands were used by the US as a testing ground for nuclear weapons during WW2. The damages caused by this testing have lasted for generations since then.
    As in the case of the Republic, contact with outsiders and induction into colonialism and global capitalism has brought some technological benefits, but has mostly turned fairly peaceful, self-sufficient societies into communities that are plagued with health issues, violence, and poverty. Many people in COFA nations are too poor to afford things like advanced healthcare, and do not receive any tangible help from the benefits they're supposed to get in the treaty. The "pipes" in the article are a blunt metaphor: yes, they have modern amenities like running water. But was it worth it?

    Its funny to imagine a civilization of flesh crafting people that prefer normal metal technology over flesh ones, considering that is what makes them unique while we find metallurgy mundane.
    “Yea sure I could use a flesh microwave but it takes 10 minutes to re-heat my food while one built with metal and electronics takes 30 seconds. Don’t even get me started on the washing machine…”
    Its a Scorn civilization that knows its futile to machines.
    Its also interesting to think about the military capabilities of such civilization when their only access to industrial guns were from percussion rifles, cannons, and revolvers, unless they smuggled and reverse-engineered outside weapons, even possibly combining it with flesh. Like they somehow got their hands on some FALs and use bone magazines and sights.

    Interesting concept, and the intro was rather engaging. But when we got into the journal entries I could see the gears turning in the writers head as they wrote this. It's extremely trope. Another noble savage story, about a native population that happens to hold all the political views that modernist post enlightenment people idolize, being crushed by a (almost) 1 dimensional caricature of the bigoted old world colonialist. Remove the SCP setting and this story becomes very trite.
    Not to say that you can't tell an anti-colonialism story. But this brings nothing new to the table. It says the same message in the same way that has been said time and time again. The only people who will be impacted are the people who already agree. No one will truly be challenged or be moved to consider something they hadn't.

      That's exactly what Russia is trying to do to Ukraine right now, what Israel has done to Palestine, what the US did to the indigenous Nations. Deny their sovereignty, colonize their lands, imprison or deport the indigenous populations until so few remain that their culture is all but a memory.

    • @vileone13
      @vileone13 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Paradoxically other nations kinda do. There are tons of countries, both now and in the past that have been considered "illegitimate" and as such have been the target of bigger and more power hungry nations for conquest and exploitation, or supposed states that claim sovereignty but are denied it because it is within the bounds of a previously established nation. A very real example is the relationship between China and Taiwan nowadays. China (and it's allies) view Taiwan as a rogue state, and infringing on it's land, while Taiwan itself and various other powers (such as the U.S. and the U.K.) acknowledge it as it's own nation.
      Nations after all are constructs, ideas more than actual real things. It's entirely based on majority consensus really, and we give them power by our belief in them and in the adherence in their laws. After all when people lose faith in a nation it is often when it collapses.
      The bit about filibuster is weird though, not sure what is going on there.
