The man walks into the room and gives her that look "I can't take it anymore, but I don't want to leave." They lay down and proceed to create a dream world. It starts with both of them coming out of the water, like fish. Things are played out how they want their relationship to be, happy. Things like her building a home out of matches in real life show up in the dream as them building a home of branches. The idea is that they are doing their best to make a home for themselves, but they are making it out of sticks that can be burned. Even in effort, the house is weak. They are trying. In this plot, it seems that he is the one trapped in her world. She makes him feel something he cannot deny, even in doom. She seems to provide these nice thoughts to ease his mind. Eventually, things fall apart. When the lyrics say "I feel I've just had enough." And the man stares at the fire, his tear hits the puddle. In that moment, once again, he changes his mind and wants it back, with her disappearing into the water to symbolize her as a fish back in the ocean, and this is a thought that scares him. He doesn't want.to lose her. He is still on land not wanting to leave. He wants this to be a happy forever after. He chases after her before but she is gone. The last dream shot is him thinking that he has spotted her in the distance almost like a mermaid, staring outwards. The dream is a representation of the cycle he is in. The last shot of their reality is them sitting and staring into each other's eyes. They both know how this ends, they both want a happy ever after, but they both know it's not possible. Star crossed in an ocean of inevitable failure. My interpretation is that he is stuck in that, and that even if it's just "play pretend", He would be lying if he said he doesn't kind of like it. It's an incredible video and it brings so much life to the story being told with the song.
