    So the tilts above 4, how do they work, especially if they are tilt 1? I noticed that different radar sites have different elevations, depending on the different values.

    • @ThunderChasers
      @ThunderChasers  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Each tilt scans higher than the previous. Usually, Tilt 1 is half a degree of tilt. That is usually what I use. Here is more information on the WSR-88D. www.weather.gov/iwx/wsr_88d

      @@ThunderChasers I can't add screenshots to TH-cam comments, but if you click Nexrad II, then say reflectivity, it will say TILT 5, 6, 7, 8... up to some random number. Like Dodge City has 20 tilt levels? I get going up to the max 19.5 degrees, but even 0.5 degrees has repeat tilts?

    Trying to figure out if I ought to get Tier 1 or Tier 2; this video was surprisingly useful _(no offense! I'd just thought it was one of those stupid damn "here is a text list, read aloud & with 0 addt'l content" - y'know,_ Top 5 New Features In Radarscope! _by IndiaAppNews®)-..._
    ...-but I still don't quite know enough about how these various tools are used in practice.
    *_E.g.:_*
    ★ Suppose the only thing I care about is avoiding... you know... the monstrous, lashing wind-tentacles _(windacles?)_ of an angry Death-god.¹
    ★ This being so, what tools would help me predict and track t-... those things... best - and/or *do I need T2* for them?
    --------------------------
    All I *really* need is whatever helps me figure out "how to tell if --your nightmare is coming true oh god oh god"-- ...er, wait, meant to say: "...if you're tracking a whatsit on weather radar" - though if there is a ton of other neat stuff in the higher tier, I'll prolly get it anyway.
    I'm sort of getting into this whole "weather" thing, almost despite myself!
    _(...but why do I say it like that? Well, people keep claiming "something something, you've clearly been traumatized, blah blah blah". Obviously, I don't know about all _*_that,_*_ buuut...)-_
    *--------------------------*
    ...I admit I _have_ had - a couple times a year, at the minimum - the same basic recurring nightmare, ever since this one childhood day.
    That was the day the sky turned an unsettling green-grey - only where it wasn't already black as night; this, so much so that _the street lamps came on_ (it was c. 1-4 PM, IIRC) - and I heard the sound of the goddamn world ending; and (in my memory, not in reality... I _think)_ felt the ground shake and saw
    a t__n_do¹.
    They are so much larger than you might think; even the smallest just go up and up and up... and there's *nothin'* you can do.
    You just stand there, and watch *_the end_*_ of _*_all things_* come get you.
    --------------------------
    ...or, in my case, lift up and pass almost (well, perhaps a mile down the road) overhead. I remember my mother crying and crying in disbelieving relief.
    I am not sure how strong that particular example was; I don't recall the houses down the road being significantly damaged, or at all (though I was an absentminded kid, and my parents moved us to the far, far (P)NW _immmediately_ afterward anyway, heh)...
    ...but *that storm* produced - not more than 15mi away from us, back then; maybe barely even 9mi - one of the 2 or 3 main contenders for the title *"the most* monstrously horrifically terrifyingly deadly exemplar _(of this already-nightmarish phenomenon)"_
    *--------------------------*
    *(¹* _OCD is telling me that if I write the word out, I might have bad luck. ...maybe they're sort of right about the "PTSD" thing hm_ -)

    • @ThunderChasers
      @ThunderChasers  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For your case, my opinion, is that you may choose Tier 1. It gives you split screen. Which you can then view Reflectivity and Velocity products simultaneously.
      This will best help you determine whether the unmentionable is approaching your location. Assuming you have watched a few of my other videos on how to read radar. Though, if you find those not satisfactory (please let me know), I may need to address the identification of unmentionables in a new video.
      I am glad you found the video at least somewhat useful. Regardless of what you decide to do, I hope your fear is alleviated, at least to the extent possible. Also, thank you for watching!

    • @Kveldred
      @Kveldred 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh no, that was too fast! I shudder to think what half-edited mess of a comment you read...
      But it seems you managed to understand it anyway, heh; and - wow, impressively quick/clear/helpful; thanks!
      --------------------------
      So: all the fancy T2 stuff is not so useful to normies like ol' Hak, eh. See - this is why I needed guidance, mi amigo! I'd never have considered the dual pane view to be important, yet now it seems _obviously_ helpful.
      ...I might just be dumb, though, because I *also* didn't consider you might have _already run through the use of these tools_ elsewhere on the channel.
      d'oh.
      Well, I'll certainly be asking more in the next few weeks, if you're amenable - I've got many questions, probably, such as:
      ★ Any reason to get the Tier 2, then? I'll be using the app often, but if a setting doesn't touch upon... uh... _[REDACTED]s_ I suppose I'll not use it.
      ★ If there's a way to donate, I'll gladly do so as a thank-you. (...not a question, is it... uh. I guess the question is "Patreon / Bitcoin address / etc?-")
      --------------------------
      *_e.g._* re: questions: a few weeks ago I was trying to see whether, within the day's overcast, there lurked another "hail band" about to sweep past.
      Not sure I ever did figure anything out on that one, heh. Reflectivity (?) or Precipitation(?), one or t'other, _seemed_ to say more was going to sweep past shortly...
      ...but I don't believe it ever did - so I was probably on the wrong map, lol.
      Same story with, months ago, anxiously listening for that hellish sound while repeatedly looking at different weather maps for comfort/warning...
      ...They all sucked, if you can believe that. (Yeah, took me a *looong* time to think of "hey I should Google _'what do the actual storm chasers use'_ maybe"...)
      My old local news site had had a setting to show you rotations, but somehow I couldn't find such a thing anywhere now. Figured out only that I needed Radarscope, or... Radar Omega, I think it was (the one you recommended for laptop only).
      Well... it's a start!¹ At least I have _something_ to calm my heart-rate down a bit in the --Death Season-- spring and summer. 🙃
      *--------------------------*
      *_P.S.:_* I didn't mean to slight this video, to clarify, if it seemed that way!
      Maaaybe if you advertised it as _EXPERT USE OF ALL RADARSCOPE TOOLS_ or somethin', I'd have grounds for complaint...
      ...but no, sadly - as much as I love complainin' - the video claims to be, and is, a quick rundown of the salient differences between the versions. The detail you give herein is absolutely sufficient, IMO.
      (...certainly, moreso than the "official" summary in the app itself! _...[mumbles angrily]_ '...write like they're getting charged by the word, swear to Jeebus. ...and while I'm at it, why do...')
      *-------------------------*
      *(¹:* _now to obsessively comb over guides and technical details, until my wandering compulsion lands on another topic - Scotch, or tool steel, or else who kn-..._
      _...hold on. is something wrong with me? hey... what _*_does_*_ the D in OCD stand for, come to think of it-)_

      @ThunderChasers  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When it comes to specific weather hazards, the first thing I need to know, is what are the atmospheric conditions. That will tell you a lot if you know how to interpret what you see in the forecast models. However, not everyone cares about the details. So, if you want to see hail on radar, you can use Hybrid Hydrometer Class, Vertically Integrated Liquid, or possibly Specific Differential Phase and Differential Reflectivity. Those products require more advanced analysis and understanding however. I have not done a video on those. Another you may be able to use is Correlation Coefficient. I may have mentioned it in another video, but I couldn't tell you which it was.
      By the way, all of these are available regardless of subscription. I may do a video on them at some point.
      In the meantime, your best tool are the warnings from NWS. Both tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings will have hail size included in RadarScope. It was always there in the warning text, but now RS reads the metadata of the warning, which has included hail size for many years.

    My app version says "Azithmul" and hail probabilities but no real way to know what the colors mean. I noticed no difference in resolution between the radarscope I've had since 2012 and the level II, and the level II is always behind on the time stamp. I wish there were some explanation for what "azithmul" means other than lines drawn on the map, even where there are no storms. I appreciate the attempt at help but that was FAST. I Have paused and rewoud this video more times than youd believe. I guess you assumed we already knew how to get to these products and what they mean. Just random colors for hail but no legend to explain what the colors mean.
