    I dated an alcoholic once. It was the scariest person I've ever dealt with. He was violent, blacking out, couldn't even function whatsoever. It was so crazy bc I always thought alcoholics could withstand more alcohol before they would get drunk. But this guy would change after only THREE BEERS. Not to mention, alcohol is one of the only two substances that are likely to kill you during detox. The other being benzodiazepines. Alcoholism is one sad disease.

    • @rajbhattacharya4427
      @rajbhattacharya4427 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Megan Ziggler Yeah. So, when a person becomes physically dependent on a drug that affects GABA in the brain (like benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and, yes, alcohol), the body will begin to go into withdrawal because the brain is essentially in shock by the absence of GABA. The brain learns over time to rely on the drug for GABA, and so when the drug is stopped it causes a violent and possibly lethal withdrawal because the brain doesn't produce as much of the neurochemical as it should anymore. There's a particular way for alcoholics to withdraw in hospital called the CIWA protocol, which was designed for this very reason. Alcohol detox is a medical emergency for a chronic alcoholic. The latter (and honestly way more lethal) stages of alcohol withdrawal is called delirium tremens.
      However, the population of people who are physically addicted to alcohol seems to be way less than the population of alcoholics in general. It seems like something that only really develops with compulsive and every day binge drinking for months straight from what I've observed, but I could be wrong.

    No matter how they try to sell it to you, alcohol is dangerous to you. It starts from a little sip and then progresses to you losing your life on a sad deathbed. I know this because I saw alcohol kill a family member

      Nicolas Cage Difference is that owning a gun isn’t harmful to your health. Alcohol is unhealthy to consume in any amount. One drink affects your immune system. Alcohol is poisonous to every system in the human body.

    • @mgal6234
      @mgal6234 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nicolas Cage That’s such a good comment, but you basically say in your first comment that it’s a matter of self control. It really isn’t. Addiction is a disease. By saying it’s about willpower, you do a disservice to addicts. It just reinforces the belief that addicts can just stop, if they only were strong enough. And people wonder why addicts hide away in shame and are afraid to get help. Phil here does nothing but shame addicts, and it’s basically like shaming people who are depressed. It solves nothing.

    • @Tara........

      I too have seen alcohol destroy the life of a family member along with those of a couple of friends. As tragic as it is, not everyone who consumes alcohol is or will become an addict. There is a world of difference between the person who enjoys relaxing with a glass of wine after work and the individual who simply can't stop once they start and ends up passed out on the floor.

    Dr Phil should have shown cerebellum scan because that's the area mostly affected by alcohol and all the symptoms of intoxication is from the that particular brain area due to abundance of GABA receptor. Also he should have evaluated for Korsakoff syndrome which is clearly shown by him in the show.

I’m only 28 years old and now have colonic inertia, fibromyalgia, fibrocystic breast disease, thyroiditis, periodontal disease, and a GI disease. I keep getting very strange illnesses now the longer I stay sober. My doctors tell me that the main culprit is alcohol and pills. This isn’t a joke-it isn’t funny. Drugs like alcohol WILL destroy your body, if you’re lucky enough to survive it.

    I think the genetic factor is more related to impulse control as opposed to alcoholism specifically. You can cut out alcohol, but if you have poor impulse control you will just find something else to fixate on (AA meetings and cigarettes are just one example). For me it was realizing that I am in control, and not the other way around. Using cognitive behaviour therapy and allowing myself to have just a few drinks and not get obliterated reinforced that I actually do have control as opposed to the other way around. Maybe complete abstinence works for some, but for me it was realizing that my excessive drinking was never really about alcohol. Once I understood that it empowered me without buying into the whole "if I have one drink I can't stop" and "I am genetically flawed" argument.

      Nope. The thing is, people can have addictive personalities and you’d never know it. There’s people who love running, baking, painting, and you’d never assume they were addicted to those things because they’re seen as harmless. But if those hobbies begin to disrupt any part of their personal relationships, or life in general, and you’d be gawking at normal humans. You exercise too much, you begin to lose too much body fat and that’s unhealthy. You love the taste of certain foods too much, you will eat yourself into obesity. You love painting so much, your house could end up with hoarded supplies. There’s certain people who have addictions that you’d never think could ever be negative, but most people can control themselves to a certain degree. Addictions come in so many ways, and we even applaud some (runners who run to extremes, adrenaline junkies we see as fearless). It’s a delicate balance and if something traumatic happens in your life you go to what brings you comfort. Sometimes people end up using seemingly harmless things as crutches and end up losing that warm fuzzy feeling. That’s when they’ll turn to the fastest warmest thing they can find. That’s very often drugs and alcohol. All of this is what makes us human. What’s inhumane is mocking, teasing, or degrading a human who is struggling simply because you don’t see yourself in that position. That’s lack of empathy. Far too many people are too self absorbed to ever lend out a helping hand. You never know what it could mean to someone who’s started down a bad path. ❤️

    This is why it’s forbidden to drink alcohol in my religion. It is in all abrahamic beliefs.

    Addicts don’t get it until they’re made to get it!! I find no remorse addicts kill everyone around them because it’s all about them!! They will drive and always walk away

    Lol. Maybe all this is true for some people, but I can drink all night and literally none of this happens to me. Guess I got good jeans.
