The Trent discourse is crazy. He was absolutely fine. One of the better players on the pitch. Still England's only other generational talent alongside Kane. But alas, he wears a Liver Bird on his chest, so it's easy to get clicks.
As others are saying, if you use this logic there are other England players nobody is questioning who should be dropped. Additionally, what’s not being discussed here is what the alternative is, or, in the language of this video, what they’re “deciding not to do.” Mainoo and Gallagher are the other options, and while the former adds some defensive intuition, and the latter adds some legs, neither was close to better needed than the threat Trent presented whenever he had the ball, and the way he and Bellingham worked off of each other in the flow of the game.
Before I watch the short I would like to comment that it didn't work because of hiw England were trying to play. They werw trying to hold on to the ball and that's not how Trent plays. For Liverpool whenever he gets tge ball his first thought is to see if he can pass the ball forward but watching him for England he was reluctant to do so which nade him come off as timid. I think he will be better suited when England are chasing a game that way you have the front players more willing to make rubs in behind
If you wanna talk abt only stats based, Harry Kane only has two touches in the whole first half and dont leave out the stats for trent 91% pass accuracy 60 touches 5/7 long balls completed 3 shots 2 ground duels won 2 interceptions
Saka lost possesion more, and trent had no runners to pass to because Foden couldnt stay wide and kane was in slowmotion. In liverpool he has diaz, nu ez and salah making runs
Saka is a winger who was running at his man in the final third, before his man turned into Chiellini. He was trying final balls and crosses, and still completed more of his passes. Alexander-Arnold is "the best passer in the world" playing deep against Serbia...
True lol... But almost all teams that eventually win start with a terrible game.. look at Spain when they won the euros back to back, they lost to the swiss in their first game... Same w Argentina 2 years ago. Their first game was a loss to Saudi Arabia :)
No English player gets more criticism than Trent. Other players on the pitch were much worse than him, and no one will talk about them being dropped after one game. I'm surprised Trent even bothers to play for us, considering how easily the media piles on him for easy content.
I mean Trent did play the ball to Saka who then crossed the goal so it's not like he didn't do anything positive all game, still there were the weaker moments during the game as well

Ironic you say "snoozefest" considering Gallagher singlehandedly upped the energy and tempo levels when he came on, while everyone else just wanted to sit in front of the penalty spot and hack the ball away just 60 minutes into the game lmao
@@jannis4547 ironic again considering that setting up to facilitate his inclusion in a position that isn't suitable makes the team worse, and he didn't do any of that anyway. Zero SCA, one defensive error, 100% dribble failure and barely any passes compared to the guy next to him. The only real thing of note was an interception, and the fact he failed to get the ball off someone twice so he just pushed him over, even though Serbia was an aerial threat and we should have minimised fouls as much as possible. I'm sure Alexander-Arnold's 49% long ball accuracy will offer "so much more" to England in this tournament.
@@RL- you obviously can include Gallagher but it doesnt fix Englands problems at all. Thats my point. Gallagher is more suited to playing midfield yes, but there would still be a lack of runners. Foden is the first one i would bench. And why cant you argue without saying "ironic"?
@@jannis4547 he's the first one I'd bench too. But I still wouldn't find a way to force Alexander-Arnold into midfield. If he gets time and space to play because the opponent sits off, his long balls (which are overrated) don't have anyone either big or fast enough to aim for and the other side will likely sit back and pack the space around the box with taller players anyway. If it's against a better side that might let us have space behind to play into, he's not going to help control the midfield when we need that after sustained periods of pressure, or if we nick a lead. It'll be more like what happened last night. If he's at right back, at least he can stay wider and offer a more natural form of width if all of our right wingers are going to invert. And the centre will be safer. But even there, it's like you'd need a five at the back with Walker pushing out to cover him when he goes AWOL. If we need a goal desperately and we're pushed right up into the opponent's half while they hold on, and we get more suitable targets on, maybe he'd be useful. If we have taller players out there and we're getting a lot of set pieces, he could be useful. Same if we somehow keep getting success in behind a team because they're half asleep. But everyone's trying to adjust the side to force him in when he doesn't offer a clear strength that plays to others' strengths anyway. That's why he doesn't "offer more". It's a different story when you have a world record goalie, world record centre back and even a midfielder who's been converted to do more donkey work covering just to enable him.
He should start RB, with just Rice in DM, then when he wants to step into midfield he can do so unmarked with time and space (how he is at Liverpool), and the defence can move to cover behind him. Him starting in the middle just doesn't work, he has to be coming in from the right in a "hybrid" position, hes neither a RB or CDM, he needs the freedom to be both.
Tent ONLY plays the key passes from right-back. This is because the play is in front of him, and his team-mates have created the space to exploit. TAA at RB and Mainoo/Wharton in mid, and he'll look good.

It's also clear they need to start Gordon for his dynamism and Shaw needs to be fit.
Lmao did u watch the game? Trent was running around like a headless chicken, he’s an incredible passer, but he was extremely ineffective in the Serbia game
@@opulentwolf1967commendable to try a system change, by playing a player out of position against international players in a tournament......hmm. Especially to stick with that change next game when it didn't work in the first game. Fitting square pegs into round holes for me
@@opulentwolf1967defending Southgate for making a brain dead declaration is crazy work.
You think they didn't watch the match? Are you serious? I think it's fair to say the TAA in midfield gamble did NOT "pay off".....
Trent should play right back.
I kind of think he should be a bench option as either a right back or midfield when England need goals and creativity
Bro we’re 3 games in and Southgate still thinks this can work.
Trent needs to just be sent home along with Southgate.
Playing TAA makes no sense at all without someone like Marcus Rashford who is willing to run in behind. Southgate is clueless.
Where are the longer tactical vids gone?? 😡
Gamble? It's not like he hasn't played there before.
There were no runners, and the "mistake" was a poor pass into him.
Perhaps remove Kane and put on Olie
This aged well.
he had no natural left winger outlet!!
Jude Bellingham..as CM... should be so blindingly obvious
Bellingham next to rice, foden in 10 role saka tight, bowen left kane up top and we will win its that easy
Im a Liverpool fan and i dont see any benefit of putting TAA in the midfield right now, Adam Wharton far better in the same position
1-0 to Serbia is a pathetic start to Euro 24.
Doesn’t fill me with confidence 🙃
True lol... But almost all teams that eventually win start with a terrible game.. look at Spain when they won the euros back to back, they lost to the swiss in their first game... Same w Argentina 2 years ago. Their first game was a loss to Saudi Arabia :)
he was really poor when coming deep almost gave away a good chance to serbia.
No English player gets more criticism than Trent. Other players on the pitch were much worse than him, and no one will talk about them being dropped after one game. I'm surprised Trent even bothers to play for us, considering how easily the media piles on him for easy content.
But why do you have to gamble when you have specialists available in each position. Klopp had to gamble at Liverpool bcoz of injury crisis. 😂
I mean Trent did play the ball to Saka who then crossed the goal so it's not like he didn't do anything positive all game, still there were the weaker moments during the game as well
Everytime someone talks about trent it's about his issues in defence, does nobody else see the issue with a RB having issues defending?
In a data set sample size of 90mins... but who likes data?
Leftback like Joao Cancelo at city
Guy begging for money daily to feed his alcohol and expensive pixels addiction thinks he has the right to call someone else an imbecile 🤣🤣
No it didn’t, he was pretty much useless, only attribute is his passing and trippier was the outlet out wide, didn’t try to find Foden in the middle
Fullbacks are not midfielders
It’s almost as if…. Hear me out….. HE CANT PLAY AS A GOOD MIDFIELDER
He was anonymous
only Walker and Jude had a good game tbh..and in a way saka...everyone else sucked..tf is wrong with Kane, Foden..weren't they supposed to like take the game to the opposition..those open crosses..noone there to meet at the end..twice! Not even getting into their defence..England really disappointed me as always!
Why even do this though? He's proven at rb with Liverpool
Very biased by only highlighting the miscontrolled ball and Not pointing out that the whole Team was too static. Shouldve picked Gordon at LW. Foden was way too deep and Not making any Runs. If you want another snoozefest than of course Play Mainoo or gallagher instead of actually working on the issues. Trent should be In the Team, preferrably at RB
Ironic you say "snoozefest" considering Gallagher singlehandedly upped the energy and tempo levels when he came on, while everyone else just wanted to sit in front of the penalty spot and hack the ball away just 60 minutes into the game lmao
@@RL- Gallagher was ok, but its more about the team dynamics. Trent offers so much more. And the substitution yesterday changed nothing
You cannot just bring up stats to judge what a player does on the pitch. Come on be better than that
Maybe klopp is right then
He should start RB, with just Rice in DM, then when he wants to step into midfield he can do so unmarked with time and space (how he is at Liverpool), and the defence can move to cover behind him. Him starting in the middle just doesn't work, he has to be coming in from the right in a "hybrid" position, hes neither a RB or CDM, he needs the freedom to be both.
Too attacking
Mainoo could be the answer
Video title- Did the gamble pay off? End of video- it’s too early to know if the gamble paid off 😂😂 absolute waffle
gallager > TAA
anthony gordon > phil foden next game
Mainoo should of started
He's not kimmich or lahm. Such a waste.
Its not that deep, couple more games and they will find form
He ain't no midfielder.
I find your permanent critique of TAA is becoming a bit of a bore John. By your standards, two thirds of the team were a gamble.
Trent shoehorned from fullback to unnecessary holding midfield double pivot.
Trent, foden, and trippier all played out of position.
Classic southgate.
This is a joke, surely lol
Oh ffs, you lot are so predictable.
Tent ONLY plays the key passes from right-back. This is because the play is in front of him, and his team-mates have created the space to exploit. TAA at RB and Mainoo/Wharton in mid, and he'll look good.
John is just biased like other pundits say the positive, it really annoying now , most countries will build their team around this talent
I love how this guy makes difficult concepts sound as easy as possible. Brilliant!
Gallagher did better
No. It did not.
Foden im worried is being burnt out by managers. Please lets rest him and let him get his creative vibe back.
Going to just forget about the actual defending he actually did so you get reactions? Shameless
What actual defending?
