    Pier 1 used to be FANTASTIC. I first came across it in a little shopping center in Oregon that had literally everything I could imagine from all over the world. Best place to shop for gifts, especially at Christmas. It was unique and beautiful, and I truly miss what it used to be. Then it got big and obnoxious, and I switched to World Market. Same thing. They were terrific for a while too and then lost their unique appeal. Sad, really. The most amazing things I find now are in out of the way thrift stores. RIP Pier 1.

    Imagine where Blockbuster would be now if they had accepted Netflix's offer to buy them. They may have still succumbed to other streaming services, but their death could've been a lot slower.

    I remember when Sports Authority closed. I bought out one store's entire stock of (American) football equipment for $13,600 (about 80% off). Donated it to the youth org I coached for. It was awesome! Did the same thing years earlier with the Modell's in Green Acres mall.

      Kmart as an independent company was dead in the early 90’s. Several holding companies including a scandal along the lines of enron bounced its assets around. Though the last three stores closed in 2022, the stores were Kmarts in name only. For about a decade before they all closed in 2022, three separate companies were running stores under the Kmart name. So it depends how you define shut down. Kmart died as an individual corporation when Seats bought them. It went steadily down for two decades after until they finally all died.

    • @Saints_1983

      I think probably because they kept the 6 second video length limit in place way too long. They eventually removed it, but by then everybody had it in their head that was what Vine was and the 6 second video was too limiting and just used other options.

    7:40. I once worked in a five-story old A&P warehouse in Pittsburgh that had been bought by a window company. I found all kinds of old stuff on the upper floors. It was fantastic notwithstanding the fact that I was working a dangerous job making $5.25/Hr back in the eighties. We used to get drunk at breaks and lunch.

    • @Adam-M-
      @Adam-M- วันที่ผ่านมา

      I remember Radio Shack was selling cell phone plans near the end. Which was weird, because you could just go to the AT&T or TMobile store down the street. Why you would ever go to Radio Shack for that, I don't know. It's obvious they didn't know, either.

    • @earleford8889
      @earleford8889 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Redbox yes. Radio shack was long gone before any of these. Though some stores remained open after another company bought a section of the stores from the bankruptcy, they were Radio Shack in name only. It is sort of like older lawn and garden products like Troy built or Craftsman. After the original company goes belly up another company buys the intellectual property and puts those names on their own products.

    • @gregoryt1139
      @gregoryt1139 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Rather like the health insurance industry, most folks didn't understand/appreciate Blockbuster's business model. Rentals paid the bills, but late fees were how they made their profits. You rented a movie for three days, but the late fee was the same price of the rental -- per day. And the "day" started at midnight, so by the time the store opened, 10 hours of the first "day" is gone, and if you waited until after work, the first "day" is only 6 hours. Plus, when the store closed at 10pm, you lose 2 hours on the last day, which makes the movie late, because it isn't processed for check-in until the store reopens. Also, because BB required a credit card, folks who refused to pay, or decided to keep the movie, just saw the charge on their Visa bill, anyway. (And since BB got movies before public retail release to Walmart, for example, BB paid about $150 per rental copy. So, keeping the movie was a $200 charge.) Netflix messed all that up.

    99cents stores was still making a profit despite what they said. It was owned by a Hedge Fund and was already being gutted like ToysRus. So, the Hedge decided it was more profitable to close, sell the assets and allow them to get that sweet, sweet tax refund. Because that's how hedge funds work. You buy, squeeze profits out, gut it and then dump it.
