Had a buddy back in 85 buy that same red and white bike brand spanking new. He had the shop manual, the tools and spare top end parts. He had fun breaking it in, and he rode it and took good care of it. It's probably still in his garage. He joined the air force and moved back to beautiful Tennessee. Great friend!!!
I bought 2 1987s for my son in 1993 one had a good engine and one had a great chassis. Paid $500 for both and built one great bike for him. It was his first one and he had a blast. He still rides to this day. Good luck with your project. I'll be watching the progress. Thanks again for your time today and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Get a portable light or something, for filming. Chuch it on the floor. Use it when showing things, especially underneath, like the oil drain-bolt. Couldn't see it... Get a portable light 👍
That's the Dirt Bike Kid YZ80! Super cool that you're going to fix it up. I'm excited to see it run again. What kid didn't want one of those back in the day.
Hey Joe you should get you a press, and some dies to press them cranks apart .Your pretty mechanically inclined to be able to do it and that would make more bikes available for you to build
That is such a cool little bike!!! I wanted one so bad when I was a kid! Once again, excellent video sir! I really enjoy watching and learning when you split the cases and do more in depth work. It would be really cool if you cleaned up the bike and bought a graphics kit for it! Great video!!
With all the wrenching that you do Joe, I'm surprised that you don't buy more quality tools, you do so well with the cheap tools, I could only imagine how well you would do with top end tools. Your good at what you do bud!!
I had KMX 125 in 1994 miss that bike, hope to find one in future and relive my childhood, love you channel and gets me pumped to wrench myself on dirt bikes.
I was just about on my way to pick up this bike when you grabbed it. I'm glad you of all people got it. You got a decent deal on it👍. Kinda glad I didn't get it lol.
Had one back in 83 & 84. When it quit it quit hard. Was my 3rd bike, started with an XR 75, CR 80, Free YZ 80 mx, then on to CR 125 and Jr moto x. Loved those old little buzzing 2 strokes. Still do.
Cool bike in pretty good shape overall. Another seller that lied. Lots of sellers lie. Never believe the seller. Once labor and time is added, not enough profit to justify a rebuild. Look forward to the next video on this YZ80.
Try millenium technologies. They do nikasil coatings on cylinders, repair cylinders, fit pistons to correct specs, also they do crank rebuilds. I had it done for 1989 kx125. Crank has to be pressed and has to spin true after. They take care of all that. Give it a try, they might have your crank still available. You have to send your old crank to them.
NEVER undo your clutch pressure plate wit a screw gun! Best lesson you'll learn in the comments section. ( i done this and ruined the threads) great video!
Loved my YZ best, sounded the best, super fast. Got it from a guy who had torn it down and sold it in boxes. For an 82 it was sweet, then went on to 83 CR 125 that little sucker was a beast on the track, miss those days.
My son started bugging me when he was 7 yrs old for a dirt bike. I told him he had to wait till he was 10. Damn if those 3 years didn't fly by. His constant reminding me every birthday didn't help either. Long story short, I found a clapped out YZ80 that ran ok and spent the winter leading up to his birthday fixing it up like new. He was surprised and so was I. How FAST that little bike was. He caught on pretty quick loves to ride and started his own YT channel last year: 970dirtriderz!😃
Fun fact - same bike from the 1985 film “the dirtbike kid” featuring the same kid from a Christmas story. Worth a watch. Laughably awful movie. I swear you’ll love it - It’s on TH-cam for free.
Maybe you can punch the rod part number in on Ebay and find some old NOS parts. Thats how I find parts that are discontinued but they are still out there somewhere in a warehouse.
sweet little bike ytoull have to measure the rod just because the specific rod isn't available there will be an aftermarket one somewhere pro x or something like that, had the same issue with an IT 125 . guy who rebuilt the crank knew where to get pattern parts and worked a charm
Looks like the whole crankshaft is identically with the one from the DT80LC here in Europe, the motors were built ny Minarelli of Italy, would go for a aftermarket one, they are as good as the OEM ones by now... Great content, thx a lot! :-D
My first bike was a 1990 YZ 80. First yr of the big wheel I believe. That bike ripped. All my friends had cr 80's n kx 80's and they couldn't keep up. They always wanted to ride my bike. But I wouldn't let them
I had a 1985 YZ 80 back in the early 90s, it was a little riper, had lots of fun on that thing. Thanks for the vid, bike brought back some great memories
Had a Yz 80 when I was like 12 or 13, was free. That little booger would boogie. My dad gave it to one of my cousins cause I was riding CR 125 racer and was starting to race it locally. Oh, the good old days.
Add that to the collection with the 490 now you just need to make a deal with me for my super clean 87 125 250 remember 87 the year Yamaha started become a contender and winning championships. And there starting to go up in value 🤟🏻
@2vintage Hey you can get pro x rod kits for the 82-83 yz80 the only thing different between it an one for 86-92 is the big end crank rod pin is 2mm longer on the 82-83 one. Just order it from proxy page. I am sure were you take it to be changed can take 2mm off
Neat little bike. They're fast for their size. You'd think there would be a better aftermarket for those parts as popular as they are. There had to be thousands of them sold in the states. I guess you could put a 125 engine on it.😃
It must be a sign that I found this video this morning I was actually in my garage yesterday getting things together to take my 93 yz 80 to my buddies house for a complete rebuild back to original. When I got it last fall it was punched out to a 112 and it blew up on the ride home unfortunately
I just got one of these bike the other day for cheap. It didn't have a motor so ill be looking for one. I had a honda xr80 when i was a kid and loved it. I hope to get this one going soon.
You said it right joe! The 80cc is a nice build to start with. Ide love to see you do a massive build on this! 100cc kit, port and polish, some good reeds and etcc. Let's see a good budget, all out build! This would be a much better series than the turbo 400ex. And you should be able to finish it all completely!!!!
I had an '86 YZ80. It was my baby when I was a teen. When I wasn't riding it, I was washing it, cleaning it, etc. MX bikes weren't a big thing around where I lived, so I felt like a king (at least in my mind, lol) Question, does wisco sell a complete crank for the bike? Sometimes you'll find a new complete crank from the aftermarket. Just an idea for you.

Haha the green bars. We all have our "special" tools, mine is a fork leg from an 86 FZ600 that we call the persuader. And that blue oil, that's crazy too. My take away on this is that some sellers will say anything to get rid of their junk. Best to always check to see what they are hiding.
These bikes are going for 2500$ Canadian in complete running condition I know I have an82j that I’m doing a crank up rebuild right now with all new NOS parts.
Once again, lemme know if n when its up for sale...since the yz80j was my 1st real bike its nostalgic to me n want to bring 1 to showroom condition n put it in my living room ( even tho mine was yellow n a different year, they look the same). NOSTALGIA! 😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

My dad's boss has this MINT 1983 Yz 100 in White and Blue, The plastics and seat are perfect, no kinks in the frame or handlebars. No clue if it's his or not because he has 3 quads that aren't his in the garage sitting in pieces on shelves. Edit: it could be an 82 yz100j, I have to check the vin
