The Godfather. This man is a basketball treasure. He's one of the last real OGs left. You did good Pat and continue to do so.
Didn't get it done in NY. I'm sure a lot of people will come back with a lot of excuses but facts are facts.
The quote “They teach you everything in life, except how to live without them.” hits home in this interview with Riley talking about his parents.
This hits me pretty hard. I’ve never had my father around and my mother just died in 2024. Now my grandmother is going to hospice. Life is too short. Anytime you say to yourself “I gotta call mom” like it’s a burden, call that woman.
And that's part of the entitled culture. Your parents primary job is to teach u how to live without them. Idk maybe he means emotionally which I can understand
@@Tacconi757prayers to your family bro 🙏
@@alainlamour5868 I appreciate it, all the best to you and yours 🙏
@@p0pimp2004I’m sure he meant that emotionally. If you had a good relationship with your parents they’re like your most loyal best friends when you’re an adult. Sucks when there gone
Hearing Pat speak so candidly, an then hear that Jimmy and/or his camp say Pat was "unhinged" when discussing their late fathers is hurtful and heart breaking.
Dan, dont know if you read these. But, got to say, great job giving this man his flowers. Too many times we're left robbed of the opportunity to convey to another how intricate they were in our lives. Pat is indeed, a godfather.
BIG FACTS!!💯
Godfather? Get off his ..
Pat Riley needed this to reset the narrative. Alot of people don't remember him as a Coach... Pat always been one of the Good Ones.
He’s old school, holds everyone accountable and treats the superstar the same as the janitor. It rubs the new generation wrong, but he’s had nothing but success.
Agree with you he needed to remind everyone that he’s a legend.
Because the current Heat fans are LeBron era fans…. The real older Heat fans knows Pat as a coach …. At least I do and he IS the GOAT …
so this is cool....im HAPPY this interview happened and Pat got a chance to express himself and recieve his flowers.... he also was on the OGs pod too... The timing however is interesting. With this Jimmy drama.... im very worried that Pat continues to manage this team as if its about HIM... which is OK...but were not winning. Theres been a bad resume of how he handled our star players and jimmy was the last one and despite the money... i thnk Pat has not handled the situation well at all. AND he hasnt given Jimmy or Bam a solid roster to realistically win championships.. So i hope he actually has interview about these present things...eventually.
Ill say the biggest thing is hes probably looking at money and contracts the same way it was back in the 80s....which isnt the case
Tell us who are the 'bad ones' , your comment is 'Feel-good sports narrative nonsense'
@@josj15 I’ll do you a better one…you tell me who the ‘good ones’ are.
For ANYONE who thinks Pat has lost a step needs to listen or watch this interview. The man is still at the top of his mental game. The Godfather! I have been a Heat fan since Glen Rice was there and a basketball fan for 40 years. This was an excellent interview!
Don’t care about current Heat issues, who’s demanding a trade or what the current team’s record is….this was a master class interview about life and leadership. If you care about bettering yourself and learning from mistakes and improving yourself sit back, listen and learn!
Thanks Dan, and thank you Pat for being open and honest about your journey.
Napfather Riley got lazy
💯💯
the whole part of him talking about his father and mother passing hits hard man...Mr. Riley showing vulnerability and emotion is a great example of true masculinity
Yes! Unfortunately, kids and men now view that as being weak. It's self reflection and taking account of their lives.
@@Steve-l6i1i The kids are getting from the adults. The adults, especially the adult males have to better.
Fex 🙌🫡🦆, facts 💯
That's a rarity him crying but we all know he's the Alpha of Alphas
@ I'm a Lakers fan and watched him up close at the Forum during those Showtime teams of the 80's. No player talked back to him, including Kareem and Magic. Back in the days when players didn't try to start a fight with their coach during a timeout...Jimmy Butler.
This is one of the best, if not the best interview of Pat Riley. Thank you, Dan! Wow. The depth, intelligence, and honesty of the interview is unbelievable.
As a 46 year old knick lifer I wanna say thank you for this interview. Excellent
Same! Pat Riley, the Knicks coach, was my favorite version of him 💙🧡
Dan, from the beginning and throughout the interview, kept bringing up how he doesn’t know why Pat has always been so kind and supportive of him, until the very end of the interview when Pat finally tells him why.
Not sure if this was planned, but what a poetic way to end the interview.
That was indeed amazing and unexpected. What a touching moment and it caught Dan off guard
Amazing. If you watch the entire interview, there’s one question Dan brings up a few times that he doesn’t understand, and finally, after two hours, Riley gives him the answer. Great interview.
This is by far the most in depth interview I've ever heard Pat Riley give. Very revealing unguarded truthful look at this man's career and himself.
Damn, hearing him talk about his dad and wishing he could have seen his success hit hard. Pat, we will see them all again one day.
Dan, bro, you knock this shit out of the park. Not even so much the hit this interview is, it is more whatever you have done over the last 30 years that allows Pat Riley to say, "Yep, I'll sit with Dan and leave all out on the table.". Proud of ya!
I know Dan will never stop doing it. But I wish he would stop interrupting people, we don't need him to fill in the blanks on everything. It really takes away the flow of a good conversation.
imagine listening to Riley in awe/nostalgia and him constantly being cut off. smh so annoying
I can't say that I know this about Dan, but in this interview i agree with you he interjects and autofills the convo to much.
OMG TY!!!
Dan has no idea how to interview. He doesn't interview at all. He just tells people what to say. It is absolutely horrific to listen to.
He only has so much time with his quest so he’s trying to move it along. But I do agree.
If you’re here for Jimmy drama…this was taped before the trade request.
But stay for stories from the greatest coach/executive and coolest humans of all time…Pat Riley.
And the greatest interviewer this market has ever known….Dan LeBatard.
Enjoy.
-(limited fake* Benny from Fort Lauderdale)
💯
Benny, I owe you a Beer or Two Sir.
Napfather Riley is lazy.
I wasn’t going to click because of the Jimmy drama but this Pat interview is gold. It couldn’t get any better and I’m only half way through it now. Great interview
I totally thought this was a PR play in response to drama with Jimmy's "joy" Buckets.
The 90s Knicks were a tremendous team with only 1 hall of famer and a bunch of guys who were willing to give their heart and body. My first love in Basketball and that includes coach Riley.
As a lifelong Celtics fan, Pat Riley is a legend. Great coach, winner, teacher, and he stood up to the players - unlike 99% of NBA coaches today, who the players walk all over. Its why Lebron left Miami. He couldn't take hard coaching.
Man i´m hooked listening to Pat Riley!! he is so magnetic and "down to earth", what a life he lived so much knowledge and still took time to help others... congratulations Dan
Pat Riley is such a classy man and obviously one of the all-time greats. This video is wonderful and shows his raw human side and how down-to-earth he is, willing to be vulnerable and yet he's tough as nails.
Pat is a winner. The words coming out of his mouth are pure. Plenty of things you can learn from this man by just listening.
What a beautiful moment. Pat Riley is an amazing part of our history as Miamians. God Bless you Pat
Dan LeBatard in this interview demonstrated why he is one of the BEST sports journalists of our time. Period. I'm way more interested in this than the silly sauce.
First, as a former TV and News, Sports producer type, I love how you open this show. The music is perfect and doesn’t override the subject. Not to mention the fact that you are a real journalist.
Riley has aged like fine wine. Happy to see him up and active still. Enjoy it while he is here.
Bimbo Coles and Keith Askins those names made me smile. You have to be 40 or above to really appreciate What Pat Riley means to the Heat
After this interview I completely understand why Dan gets defensive when people bash Pat. It's hard not to have all the respect in the world for that man.
One of the most amazing interviews I've ever seen whether in sports or any other part of life. Extraordinary.
This gave me a whole new appreication for Pat Riley and his legacy. Clearly tough as nails and driven, but also humble, thoughtful and loyal. In many ways, Pat telling Dan at the end that he's looked after him all these years because of how he treated his dad says it all.
Man Pat Riley seems like a wonderful human being. Love his intensity but also love his vulnerability. The godfather! Great interview 👏🏽🏀
Anyone who watches this interview and sees the pain that's still in his voice from losing his parents years ago can't then think that he was heartless or unsupportive of Jimmy in his time of need.
Thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish!
I started listening to Dan in 2006 on 790 The Ticket. This is Dan at his absolute best. I only wish I can be this great at interviewing people one day.
Dan is great by himself. He just surrounds himself with wannabe comedians that don’t take their jobs seriously
43 years old and basketball has been my love since I was 3. Pat Riley is a basketball icon. As a Heat fan and as just a basketball fan in general that man is a hero
Pat Riley loved Dan because of how Dan treated and loved his father. An alltime interview.
Pat has always been my favorite nba since the 1980s. Glad to see him win his 5th nba title as a coach in 2006. Missed his dark slicked back hair and Armani suits during the nba's golden era.
I feel Pat so deeply as it relates to his father. My father passed when I was 21 which was more than a decade ago now and I STILL have issues watching movies were the father gets to see the son make advances in their life that they can share together. That was tough to watch. Great interview all the way around!!! 😊
Never knew how humble this man is…truly inspiring, wow 🤝
Listening to Riley you always learn something I just love Pat
The Boss!!!!! There's no one like Uncle Pat Riley
Great pod! I never watched anything about Pat Riley before this but I'm glad I did. It was cool to hear how down to earth he is. When he spoke about his dad, that hit. Also, he looks young asf for 79! Much love and stay blessed.
This was therapeutic for everyone
Yes
I’ll never change on Pat, it’s like listening to your grandfather.
How wouldn’t you not want to play for the Heat, this guy is THE LEGEND. No one is perfect, but his mentality is pretty much “My perfections are my imperfections.” Love it
Pat Riley is OG. Great Respect.
This is one of the best interviews I have ever heard on anyone, especially a HOF NBA legend. So much respect for both of you! You 2 are greatness personified.
To think we had Don Shula with Dolphins, Pat Riley with the Heat and Jimmy Johnson with the Hurricanes makes me realize how lucky we were for a long time
This is why regular tv sports shows are done. What a dope interview
Pat Riley is the GOAT of Basketball
1:50 though not about Butler per se, his philosophy is sound.
Great interview. It felt like walking into a classroom with the greatest guest lecturer of all time.
Riley's memories and recall are ridiculous. If i have half that retention at 80 I'll be ecstatic.
People can say what they want about Pat and some of the decisions in the past 10 years (or 10 months), but that will never diminish his legacy as one of the best to ever do it across multiple roles. A hardened man true to his family/roots with a neverending internal battle and an unrelenting standard that is impossible to meet year in and year out, but at the same time a deeply sentimental person with great love and appreciation of those around him. Great to see him open up and share some of what brings him happiness as he gets closer to the finish line. Can agree or disagree with how he has handled the roster or media, but there are few greater than Pat and the Heat is fortunate to have an icon like him steer the ship for decades and pass to another undeniable leader in Spo.
What Coach! What stories! NBA is a better place for having Pat Riley in it! Amazing Interview
Dan & Pat Thank You .
Grew Up reading Dan writing ✍️ his Column in Herald in Junior High.
It Meant something Knowing He made as a Latino Minority because His work ethic & dedication to become very good at his Craft.
Pat Riley influence me because you can actually learn Life Lesson in Sports that apply to Life.
The concept of “Culture “was what Pat Riley gave Birth to Sports.
Thank You Pat Riley!
Thank you Dan for interviewing Pat.
The NBA NEEDS this guy as commissioner
He's Irish. Won't happen.
If I was in the NBA I wouldn’t want to play for any other franchise that didn’t have Pat at the head. Demands excellence, and hard work.. knowing everyone else is gonna work as hard as me is very pleasant.
I could listen to him talk all day. That's his superpower, isn't it? Storytelling.
Love Pat Riley. Always that special presence
Thank you Dan and Pat. Great conversation, stories, emotions. A true legend, Pat Riley.
Great interview. He was insightful, vulnerable (to a degree) and funny.
Old Celtics fan here....but I can truly appreciate the story and path of this great man...great interview!
I love pat riley, and stories of perseverance
We still love you in Los Angeles! NBA LEGEND
Spellbound idk why but this brought me full circle ⭕️ very cathartic energy Pat and Dan!!
I remember I went to Miami Dade South, lived in Kendall, worked at the Chilis on 117 ave. and Turnpike. Heat was all we had. Glen Rice, Rony Seikley were the starters.
I have used his strict persona for discipline throughout my life to push me to accomplish anything that I put my mind to quotes like " pain makes coward of us all" , his dedication, honesty and staying the course on any task have been a road map for me.
Amazing testimonial from HOF Mr PAT RILEY, a true legend
this was a great interview and i totally feel for Pat and relate to him especially as he talks about his father. - I feel the same about my own who's now gone (who ironically as a carpenter worked on a member of the Knicks front office Long Island [we live out here] vakay house as a kid).
Some bonds drive you for the entirety of your life, I've recently broke through my own downs of recent years and now will find myself just enjoying things and wanna be a lil sappy a moment like "damn i wish Pops were here to see me finally breaking through this cloud that been overheard" - loss is a powerful motivator but a foul mistress.
And tbf as a man the loss of a father for some of the strongest men while it hurts them deeply will unlock a level of power within them that motivates em forever after, like Pops makes sure to send some of his soul energy to you.
Pat Riley is a Legend. As a Knicks fan I was very upset when we lost him.
WHOA... the great Pat Riley!!!
Great interview. Pat is responsible for Heat basketball 💪🏼
Love Pat Riley.
Another great interview Dan!
This is a motivational and inspirational podcast from pat Riley.
Admire Pat..great interview...giving him his flowers..thank you Pat🎉🎉🎉🎉
Pat Riley with the Teddy Swims shout out is wild 😆 👏🏽 the Don knows great music 🔥
So awesome! You got Pat Riley on. This is amazing 👏
What a Legend
Damn, the last 10 seconds got me. He finally gave him the answer why.
Pat is not just a coach in Basketball hes also a life coach and thats bigger than basketball. God im glad hes still on the Heat and these bastards wanting him to retire because of Butler drama happening just pisses me off. #heatlifer #GodFather
That hit hard. The way you treated your papi. 🙏🙏🙏
Dan the biggest in South Florida and if he wanted to could be the best in the country easily! Getting Riley here to come in is an example!!
damn this whole Jimmy thing, seems to be some sort of illumination of the real Pat Riley. Unintended consequences, Im liking it.
A living leyend 🌹🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
What a powerful interview!!!
Great convo... too many of the podcasts forget to actually have substantial conversations with a brillant mind.. I just enjoyed being a fly on the wall
@@JericKo you mean the jock sniffing by Dan? Suuuuuuure
Pat Riley is a legend
A great man because he is pure hearted and is not capable of not giving his all or allowing people not to give 💯
Phenomenal introduction!! What a way to honor Pat 👍🏾
Before you ask in the comments, this was done weeks before the Jimmy drama.
Before or after he told Jimmy to shut his mouth?

Dan I am not a fan of your politics, but you are gifted with your choice and use of language. Well done Chaminade man.
Respect
What a legend. Been through so many decades and eras in basketball.
This is an awesome interview, I never knew Pat Riley was so layered, amazing mind
Great interview
This interview conclusively shows Pat Riley‘s well grounded personal and ethical takes. His view, is that an NBA player, should respect and honor work ethic. While talent allows a players journey to grow, work ethic takes that talent to levels of profound respect and admiration. Riles current and past challenges with Heat players, is and has, simply been based on his view that ALL Heat family must share that willingness and desire to out work other organizations. Compensation follows after performance (at least willingness to prepare and perform). Intuitively, family is treated accordingly - see Zo, Spo, Udonis, Dwayne and Jimmy…
Great interview with a great man!! Always so many different dimensions to everyone you never know about.
Outstanding interview! Thank you Dan
Thanks Dan for this great great interview
Also Jay Sabol was my manager at Winn Dixie when I was a teenager. He used to pull up to the store on Sunset and 152ave in a Corvette. Nice guy.
Dan you are the envy of every kid born in Miami
And I don’t say that from a hating pov
Thank you for this
And Pat I love you man thank you for what you’ve done here in Miami
“How you treated your Dad”
