Awesome song and message, like you said! The amazing singer-songwriter Carole King wrote this song and included it on her Grammy-award-winning best album for 1971 called "Tapestry." She allowed her friend James Taylor to record and release her song around the same time that year on his album, and James's version became a No. 1 hit in the U.S. and won a Grammy for best male pop vocal performance. Carole won a Grammy award for best song for writing this song (her version is very good, too!), and she also won a Grammy that same year for best record for her own song called "It's Too Late."
"Folk music" was big at this time in the U.S. Acoustic solo artists, duos, and 3 and 4 piece bands were in virtually every bar/pub on the weekend and often during the week. It was a golden age for music.
He is a gentle talent.Over 50 years now....still touring and making new music.Had a different but beautiful acoustic guitar sound.Try his Shower the People and Mexico. And I think you have done my favorite...Fire and Rain.
It's almost miraculous to be able to watch such wonderful, intuitive people experience the music of James Taylor for the first time ever. JT practically invented the 1970s in America and simply set the standard for what high-quality music and musicianship can be, not only in the U.S., but worldwide. His live band has been unmatched for more than 40 years, regardless of the lineup, and he has made classic music not only alone but with other artists like Crosby and Nash from CSNY, Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon, Allison Krause, Steve Winwood, Joni Mitchell, Carly SImon, Carol King (who wrote this song),Ricky Scaggs, his brother, Livingston, and many others. The man is the embodiment of a living legend. So happy you guys are listening to him now!
This song was actually written by Carole King for James in response to his song Fire and Rain which among other things chronicles James learning about the death of his (girl)friend which had been kept from him while he was in England, as well as his struggles with drug addiction.
This is from the multi platinum album called 'Sweet Baby James." During the late 60's and early 70's there were a bunch of singer/songwriters who have created some of the worlds greatest songs. Artist like Carol king who wrote this song, Neil Diamond, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Elton John and Paul Simon. And the list goes on and on. Great reaction as always.
days of the 8 track tape players and gas was 21 cents per gallon. cigs were .35 cents a pack. a 6 pack of grain belt beer .99 cents. a nickel bag of mexican weed would last 2-3 days. spent most summer days cruising around and playing pool
My wife and I was at a Biloxi casino about 10 years ago, I wasn't with her (at a different casino} and so she was going to eat and James was right behind her, she was tipsy {drinking} and she kept looking at him, then she said "Do you know who you are? " {LOL}, and he said yea, James Taylor. He was by himself also, so he ate lunch with her and signed an autograph for her. Only Americans will get this....I said are you sure that wasn't Paul Finebaum....LOL. {If you want to google both of them you will see my point, but I was just kidding with her of course}.

James Taylor is part of the Classic past and foundation of soft rock along with Carole King who was the Songwriter.

On of my favorite songs EVER...You've Got A Friend...such a classic.
The incomparable Mr. James Taylor.
Love his voice and this song!
I hope one day I get to sit down with the both of you and embrace the journey of music over a cold drink ):
