  • Yes - You know and I know that these are not the original Pirates no matter what Steve Wright says but still, we have the wonderful Green / Spence combo....Still waiting for the 60's footage I guess but until then......

Saw them at West Runcton, Norfolk around 1979. They were brilliant. So much energy and Mike was on fire. He also had some plasters over his eyes as a result of some overactive crowd participation. But the show must go on, and it certainly did.

I was blessed to see them support AC/DC at the Brighton Pavilion in 1979 they were fkn brilliant but as you can imagine everyone was there to see Bon and the lads :P

I loved Johnny kidd when I was four years old and by that time he was backed by the second set of Pirates (Mick, Frank and Johnny Spence). I bought all their records in the seventies and early eighties and went to most of their gigs from 2000 onwards. Always a great show. Mick was much in demand playing for Van, Brian Ferry and Paul McCartney in his final years. Happy times. Great music.

It must have been around the turn of the century that a 1970's Pirate's TOTP performance was shown on TOTP2 and in his naration Steve Wright said they were playing in London (the next day) and for the first time in many years.
In those days we had the wonderful Planet Sound gig guide on Channel 4 teletext and checking it I saw that they were at Dingwalls and I saw them.
I saw them three or four more times, once at The Borderline and also at The Ace Cafe.
I remember reading that this performance was recorded at TV Centre about 9.00am and it was noticed that several persons of long standing at the BBC came to see them play. Sort of people who wouldn't normally attend, senior managers in suits, those sort of people. This was a very rare performance. It's not as if they'd had huge hits or anything but someone arranged for them to be given this slot. I recall that they played three numbers and I think opened with Peter Gunn.
A pity no Frank Farley, that might be why they're a little slow.

I can hear Link Wray’s Rumble influence in the riff of this song and in Mick’s style of playing guitar. I can also hear that Wilko Johnson was influenced by Mick’s style of playing guitar …..

The original Pirates included Alan Caddy and Clem Cattini, who both joined the Tornados.

So did The Pirates original Bass Player, Brian Gregg. He took over when Heinz left for a solo career.
The Tornados then consisted of Cattini, Caddy, Gregg along with Roger Lavern & George Bellamy.

My local band when I was about 12/13 (1963-4). Me and Richard used to slip into whichever venue they were playing on a Saturday night and come out drenched in sweat a few hours later. I remember the club managers would pull the plugs at the end of the set whilst the band would follow to plug back in. Years later, Hunters and Collectors would do the same and sometimes get to play all night . . . . th-cam.com/video/6AuuLaB9mjs/w-d-xo.html

@@stevebowness9435 The original drummer was Clem Cattini, who with Alan Caddy and Brian Gregg, left the Pirates to join Colin Hicks after the follow up to Shakin' All Over failed to chart. They'd eventually evolve into the Tornados, and their replacements were Johnny Spence, Frank Farley, and Johnny Patto, who'd soon leave to be replaced by Mick Green.
