  • A detailed demonstration of the G major 2 octave scale and arpeggio for beginner (grade 1) violinists and self teachers like myself. Learning this scale will help in the long run by making it easier to learn a large portion of beginner songs that are in the G major scale.
    In this video, I review all the notes / finger patterns AND 3 different ways to progressively practice the G major scale. Near the end, I also go over the G Major Arpeggio, note by note.

    I'm 64 and i just got my first ever violin, a Yamaha sv-200 electric violin. It is groove. It is fun. I'm not using the tape. I just mapped my neckboard. The violin is kind of like a trombone.

    Thank you for not assuming “a beginner” has 3 years experience and knows exactly where to place their fingers to play a scale… I have no idea why 99% of beginner videos just name the notes while playing, I think students that are able to do that are probably more advanced than those who decided to film their out of tune playing…. Very much appreciate the help

    Can I please ask during the 2 Octive g major scale do you always keep the 3 fingers down on ie 1A 2B & 3C when playing the scale or is a good tip just to keep 3 fingers down for good practice hope this makes sense many thanks

    • @LadyAndTheViolin
      @LadyAndTheViolin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question. I tend to keep my first three fingers down because it helps with intonation. So yes, I would recommend keeping fingers down as you play the scale - only if it's NOT causing tension. For example, on the A string, I tend to lift my low 2nd finger (C natural) when I place my 3rd finger. I do this because when I keep the low 2nd finger down, it causes tension and as a result affects my intonation and could potentially cause injury. So my advice (as a fellow student) is be efficient by keeping your fingers down but pay attention to how you feel. Then adjust your playing method to avoid tension. Hope this makes sense...Happy Practice!

    How do you strengthen your pinky? Just by practicing scales? Or do you do some exercise with some external tools like grip strengthener?

    • @LadyAndTheViolin
      @LadyAndTheViolin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, pinky strengthening requires a different type of drill(s). The drill that helps the most is one from Schradieck Book 1 - Exercise 1, Line 6 & 7. You basically strengthen your pinky by alternating with different fingers and the pinky. There's another helpful drill by Violinspiration that's similar to the Schradieck exercise. It takes 1 year to complete the Suzuki violin volume 1 book?

    • @LadyAndTheViolin
      @LadyAndTheViolin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily, it depends on the person. It can be more or less than a year depending on how fast you can "master" the pieces. I took about 1 year and 3 months.

    • @sunragav
      @sunragav 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LadyAndTheViolin Thanks for the reply. I discovered your videos while searching for a source to learn G major arpeggio. Your videos are simple and great. I have been learning violin for the past one and a half month and I have progressed till Etude exercise in the Suzuki volume book 1. Currently, I am beginning to use G string and I am learning G major scale and arpeggio. I could play all of the 11 exercises at a beginner level speed, with some reasonable level of string crossing mistakes, with somewhat straight longbows on E, A and D. To explain my current level, I have no problem going up the scale using the fourth finger on G major scale but while coming down I find it difficult to get the fourth finger on the spot with the right amount of pressure. I hope that it will get better over time. But, 1 year seems to be a very long time and makes me feel that I have a very long mile to cross. I hope to achieve it in 6 months. Am I unrealistic in my expectations?

    • @LadyAndTheViolin
      @LadyAndTheViolin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's great, I'm glad my videos are helping. I try to post videos that I would have found useful when I first began my learning. You are progressing really quickly, after Etude the real fun begins. I had the same problem with my fourth finger too, with time it does get better as long as you address the problem. For example, to solve the pinky issue when descending scales, I'd stop and try to solve the issue by repeating the first to fourth finger motion, when I got the pitch and sound correct at least three times, I would continue with the rest of the scale. You will get better with time. Six months to complete Book 1 is not unrealistic, especially if you have a teacher to help you. Me, on the other hand, am self teaching and I like to mix up the lesson plan with other beginner pieces. It keeps my learning interesting. All the best in your learning!
