As stated by the creators, Stranger Things taps into the nostalgia of growing up watching '80s movies, rather than the creation of them, so it allows that comforting feeling and love for the media to extend even younger to people now in their 30s as well. The sci-fi and horror elements, the characters written so lovingly to act as the core driving force, and the playful use of DND that was divisive but popular at the time as the veil for the world, all come together so well imo. The first season especially wraps up so tightly with very few flaws, and could easily have been left as a memorable and legendary one-off series. I do love how everyone and everything involved has advanced all the way to season 5 too though.
