    Why would you need a jet engine ? This 2-stroke works perfectly.

    • @codmott286
      @codmott286 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My only concern with this 2-stroke is the modifications made. It's mounted vertically and being used in hot humid climates. It's a snowmobile engine meant to be used in very cold climates.

    What did the belt go to? Looks like fun practice exercises, requiring total concentration at all time.

    • @MauiFlyGuy
      @MauiFlyGuy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This new model is fuel injected and water cooled. This belt goes to the radiator fan. We and an idler and the problem was solved. Sorry it took me so long to respond.

    How safe do you feel in these things? Every mosquito video out there demonstrates the pilot flying no more than 10 ft off the ground doing laps at 5 mph in an open field. Are the pilots too scared to actually hit 90mph up high? Or do any aggressive treetop flying at all? Helicycle pilots seem to have the confidence to actually go places whereas Mosquito pilots seem too timid to do anything other than a quick circuit around the airfield and then land.

    • @MauiFlyGuy
      @MauiFlyGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There are many vids where Mosi pilots go from point A to point B. The vid you are watching here is the first flight at the factory. I believe that "aggressive treetop" flying is one of the factors that has killed many experimental pilots. If anything happens there is nowhere to go.Personally I don't get much pleasure flying real high. 300-500 feet at about 60 is a perfect for me to enjoy flying. Everyone enjoys different styles of flying but remember, there are old pilots and bold pilots but there are no old bold pilots. Thanks for your comment.

    • @codmott286
      @codmott286 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh I agree with your style of flying, I didnt mean literally treetop, 300-500 ft is perfect. I just dont see many vids even depicting this. I understand yours was a test flight.

    • @MauiFlyGuy
      @MauiFlyGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you really look around you will find vids of folks 300-500 going places. To a point some of these vids are boring. Anyone can fly an aircraft, it is how you handle it when you are close enough to hit something that counts.
      Thanks.

    On the spec sheet the 2 stroke uses so much less fuel than the turbine. Does it have higher rebuild intervals?

    • @MauiFlyGuy
      @MauiFlyGuy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not totally sure I understand your question. Turbines drink fuel, that is their nature. The rebuild on the turbine and 800 engine are conditional. Pistons on the 202 are recommended to be replaced every 50 hours.

    A belt?.. A fatal flaw..But on the plus side.a Good hover Radius. Fly safely. :-)

    • @MauiFlyGuy
      @MauiFlyGuy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not a fatal flaw. This is why we do test flights. When one builds an Experimental the first 10-20 hours needs to be a time to get use to all the characteristics of the craft so you are prepared for any thing that may happen. You must have enough training to be comfortable if you need to perform an autorotation. I am taking it slowly. I have too much time and money invested to rush into getting into the air and not being prepared. Thanks for your concern.

    • @MauiFlyGuy
      @MauiFlyGuy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Prashant More Go to the Mosquito site for all of the specs. The 285 burns 6 GPH, the XET burns 8 GPH. I like the Inntec 800, and I can work on a 2 cycle motor but not a turbine.

  • @kinome79
    @kinome79 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is this one of the first completed xe285's? I'm in talks with John in IL, and am just on the step of finalizing financing before ordering one of these... unless of course he convinces me to cough up the extra doe for the completed XET he's selling.

    • @MauiFlyGuy
      @MauiFlyGuy 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this is the first Factory Assist XE 285 completed. There was the first the factory built and a few retrofits of the Inntec 800. I could not afford the XET and if the 800 goes down, I have worked on 2 stroke engines. I can not start to fix the turbine. Sorry it took so long to reply to you.

    novice question coming through. Would every helicopter pilot have a parachute ready in case of crash?

    • @MauiFlyGuy
      @MauiFlyGuy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Krishnan RV Not all of us can afford a parachute. That is why all heli pilots must be proficient at performing Autorotations. I know some Mosquito owner that have had to perform autos, landed safely with no damage to the heli. While on should walk away coming down under canopy, you still don't know exactly where and how you are coming down. This is just my opinion.

    • @krishnbimanagar
      @krishnbimanagar 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      wow are chutes so expensive that pilots can't afford one despite it being a life saver? Interesting.

    • @MauiFlyGuy
      @MauiFlyGuy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Krishnan RV Have you ever skied in Colorado. If you ski after a big snow there is a chance of an avalanche. There is a device that inflates and helps the skier stay at the top of the snow flow. Some even have GPS to help locate the skier. This device adds a large safety factor to help the skier survive and get located. but some folks can not afford the $600+ that this device costs.
      If you maintain the helicopter and are proficient at performing autorotations, you will be able to walk away from about any forced landing.

    • @dicktheaspergeron4988
      @dicktheaspergeron4988 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Krishnan RV I've never worn a parachute and NEVER come across any other helicopter pilot wearing a parachute either. EVER. Your skill and proficiency MUST ensure that you can autorotate the ship to the ground in the event of engine failure. You have a responsibility to yourself, the ship and most importantly people your ship might crash into if you let it drop out of the sky ! Anyway - how on earth are you going to bail out with rotating blades above you, at hundreds (rather than thousands of feet) AGL, deploy your chute and land safely ? I've jumped out of planes a few times and you need to be 800ft+ to not risk serious personal damage.

    • @FirePilot2020
      @FirePilot2020 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Krishnan RV Never heard of a helicopter pilot wearing a parachute... It's not so much a matter of expense, it's a matter of they don't really exist for us helicopter folk. Autorotations are plenty adequate. The Russians tried to make a chute that came out of the mast, but lost all of their helicopters and test pilots during development.

      The 285 is a more powerful 2 stroke, 2 cylinder engine that is water cooled (slightly quieter), fuel injected (no jetting), and has its own oil mixing pump ( no more pre-mixing oil and gas). This is a great improvement!
