Hello, what an interesting episode. I hugely love Richard ll. it is in my top five Shakespeare plays and I agree the Hollow Crown was excellent for this play. I must listen to the Rest is History podcast for this, thank you for the recommendation. I read Tom Hollands translation of The Histories by Herodotus. It was fantastic so I bet the podcast is good.

They also did a series on the Hundred Years War, about the history leading up to Richard II. Excellent as well. I hope you like it!
Oooh I didn’t know he did translation work too.
Glad to hear you love Richard II too!

Great reading from W in the W!
I first read that book in my twenties, when it should have been ten years earlier. It is still one of my favorite novels .
If you're looking for an American equivalent, try Stuart Little by E.B. White, it has a slight edge on the better known Charlotte's Web.
The Richard II I saw was Derek Jacobi on the TV version. All I think of regarding Shakespeare's Edward II is "the poor slob!"

Richard II! I love Richard II (the play)! I used to love Richard as a character after I read it for the first time a handful of years ago. Then I reread it twice last year and I could see all the play better hah

It’s a fascinating character isn’t he! Not very likeable at the beginning but I end up liking him more and more throughout the play. Glad to hear you love the play too!

A few years ago, I saw a group at my uni perform Duchess, and I don't know what it was (whether it was simply the story or if it was the way it was performed/directed) but the amount of deaths managed to come across as really funny because it seemed so ridiculous.
There was a number of people in the audience around me who seemed to have the same reaction - kind of like 'really? Again?' but like in a giggly kind of way.
I feel like I might need to read it or see it performed again to see if it has the same affect a second time 😅

Hahaha yes I can imagine it becoming ridiculous and comical! Very brave choice! Yes there were dead bodies everywhere at the end. In the Globe production they all just stood up one by one and did a dance to end the show 😅 I think it requires tremendous energy and emotion to pull the tragedy off.
