I am not an "in-the-box" collector and I want to play with my action figures. Both types of bodies (bandless and traditional) have their merits and limitations. If you are not an MIB customer, I think education is the key, and knowing how to manage the articulation or replace O-rings is part of Mego collecting.

Very recently, I saw a vintage Mego Fonz from 1976 and it came with the box. Not my thing but curious to check out a 48 yr old figure. The store employee let me carefully open the carded box. Sure enough, one of the legs was loose in the box. The faux leather jacket was crunchie too. I do have some vintage 70's Mego with no issues but it comes down to how they are stored. High heat and humidity is hell on plastic. None of the new ones I have broke on me if I have a double out of the box.

Protecting the older Mego figures are extremely important, I always wondered how the Fonzi jacket would hold up after 40 plus years and if kept in perfect conditions I suspect that it would do just nicely.

I don’t know what to think. I’m more of a MIB guy when it comes to Mego WGSH, but I have opened a few, and I haven’t had any of them break on me. There’s a golden rule when it comes to any action figure joint regardless of the style or scale of the figure: When you meet with resistance, stop, and look for possible solutions.
In 25 years as an adult collector, I have bought figures from dozens of lines made by dozens of companies, and the only time I remember breaking anything is when I failed to follow that rule.
I had Dr. Fate out of the box a few weeks ago to test this theory after hearing how many people had issues with their WGSH Megos. I fully expected him to break on me, but nope…no breakage. Elbows, knees, arms, legs, wrists…no problem. The articulation does leave something to be desired by 2024 standards, though.
Maybe I’ve just been lucky, or maybe I just don’t put my figures through the paces that they should be able to be put through without breaking. Having said that, there are enough collectors that are unhappy that I think something needs to be done. I don’t know if going back to previous bodies is the answer, but I think moving forward with better bodies is, especially before the Marvel releases.

What a fantastic breakdown of this highly talked about topic !!! Yes, I too believe moving forward with better technology and materials would be the proper course of action. Because I never take my figures out , I’m somewhat at a disadvantage in terms of simply not being able to truly appreciate the unfortunate issues with these beautiful figures. Mego Corp will definitely make the necessary adjustments, I’m sure of that. Your golden rule as a collector, is one everyone should follow, myself included !!! I throughly enjoyed reading your comments and even have learned a few things about how other collectors process information regarding their collecting methods !!! I salute you my friend !!!

great video MIB .the type 2 bodies from the 70s was best ,with play there gonna get worn out & break ,however i never had a band break in 50 years ,the
companies who make new Megos in the last 15 years have had issues ,Emce ,Bif bang pow ,mattel retro action FTC & Mego today just cant get it right .
i had bands break from them all ,their inferior bands -Emce small bands they break,FTC -bands also inferior & strung to tight -break ,mattel retro -with time
they get loose and wobbley ,bif bang pow -same as emce -small and to tight & break ,the new Megos had ( 0) rings -they break ,
the bandless bodies can break at knees ,the S-bodies sold by FTC are good but if you got those be careful on those screws in the back ,their soft and can
get stripped , Mego would be best to go back to the 2018 with good quality bands this time so they dont twist or break with .70s bands ,they would hold up .the new Mego bandless can work if they just get the knees ,elbow ,waist joints put togther correctly .curiously each company had head size issues from time to time ,why cant they get it right ?? thanx for sharing MIB

How are you M.I.B Master Toy Museum? Long time haven't heard from you, Friend! Very intelligent Question!? My thoughts, the Upgraded Bodies for the MEGO Figures, are much better than Old type 2 MEGO Bodies, in my Opinion. Reason, the Rubber Bands in the MEGO Bodies, if Posing too often, might Out Wear and Tear the Elasticity of the Bands. And while the Upgraded MEGO Bodies, the Possibilities are Unlimited and won't break on you, if you Pose it carefully. By the way Buddy!? LOVE YOUR MEGO DC SUPERHEROES FIGURES!!! I do like the ability to fix the older bodies, because the bands can be replaced. But the modern articulation on newer Mego bodies is better, except for the knees on the 50th anniversary figures. Somehow they screwed that up and made it so you can't bend to a 90 degree angle. I've heard they will fix this eventually, but I kinda stopped buying stuff since they haven't announced any new Planet of the Apes or Star Trek.

Yeah, I have to admit with my new ones the joints are stiff and the thought of having to go through all of them, take the costume off and take a hair dryer to it does not appeal to me. Shouldn't really have to do that. And will they go back to the stiffness after a while? Then again my original Superman figure from back in the day is all loose and though there are tutorials on here about how to fix that, I don't know if I have the skills to do that. Seems like they both have their pros and cons. Of course we played with them a lot when we were kids so that has something to do with the lifespan of the bands. Also might have to do with where you store them. Considering how old my original Superman is, how much I played with him and where he's been stored all these years, it should be in worse condition! I probably will mostly keep them in the box. Anyway, I finally posted my Mego video so check it out: th-cam.com/video/veCnI_rFTOk/w-d-xo.html

I’m all for whatever body will display the best over time … and by time we aren’t talking years but rather DECADES, as we are already a half century in with original Megos.
To not recognize that these will be on display for over a century would be to ignore the current trend line.
That said, the new bodies with issues of breaking joints is an unfortunate quality issue that I am sure Mego will work to improve, as that is not desirable either.
And as you mentioned the PRICE point is something that is a huge parameter we all need to use to set our expectations.
Don’t expect to buy a $20 figure and expect it to be better than a $40-100 one.
But all in all, MEGO is fantastic and is only comparable with McFarlane’s Superpowers line in value and quality for the dollar. At $10 for them and $20 for MEGO, I am in a wonderful new golden age of figures for me. It has NEVER been a better time in my life to collect action figures that appeal to me!!
    Your mileage will vary
