秋吉台に春を呼ぶ早春の風物詩である山焼きは、昔は、伸びた雑草を燃やして新芽を育て家畜のための採草や放牧の目的で行われていました。
現在は、「秋吉台国定公園」の景観を守るため、また、学術的な価値の高い自然としての「特別天記念物秋吉台」を次世代に引き継ぐため、毎年2月下旬に秋吉台上の約1,138ヘクタールに火を入れています。
この山焼きにより、草原の維持、森林化防止、貴重な植物や昆虫等の生息環境保全、倒木等による石灰石の棄損を防止しています。
