    Powerful things. During GWR 150 4930 and 5051 double headed an Express to the west country and on Dainton bank 4930 broke down due to bad coal so 5051 had to pull the 600 ton train AND Hagley Hall by herself. She did well, she stalled close to the summit though and a nearby class 50 came to rescue. They did try to get 7029 clun castle to come help, but she was at Bristol. Just imagine it though, a triple header of two castles and a failed hall on the mainline.... ooooohhhh....

    Brilliant review, I'll have to get one of these for my layout! Also glad to hear I'm not the only one with railmaster issues, completely buggy software and when I tried to activate mine ended up spending hours on the phone to hornby to get it activated, still no luck so will be selling off my digital controller and going with a Digitrax Zephyr!

    My grandpa used to live in England around the GWR region. I once asked him what his favourite locos were. Not surprising, he said the Kings and the Pannier Tanks. But I think Hornby tend to make you pay alot for TTS sound. I model the Victorian Railways in Australia, so i don’t have to worry about Hornby.

    Saw one of these (4073 - Caerphilly Castle) in the flesh at Steam in Swindon earlier in the year, and other than a few details on the front which were silver and not the black like they are on this model, it all looks pretty spot on as far as I can see. Great model

      Glad to hear that Adam - Hornby do quite a good job with their GWR 4-6-0s - never heard any complaints about these castles!

    Castles, when fitted with the higher superheat boilers were then fitted with mechanical lubricators. Your castle represents one with the standard low superheat boiler & thus would have hydrostatic lubrication, represented by the row of sight glasses in the detailed cab.

    There was a castle locomotive called Earl Of Clancarty, or Newport Castle (5058) which my name was partly deprived from, which is a good part of my family history that name, because of it being Irish and having an Irish family background. However, it has been scrapped but the name plate still exists at Didcot Railway Centre at the Museum itself. It was a fantastic discovery.

      Caerphilly Castle (the first Castle built) is unlikely to ever be restored, as the last work it had done to it was from Swindon works and is in proper ex Works condition. Especially seeing as there are 2 in mainline condition with potential for another 4 in the next couple of years, it’s better to keep Caerphilly in exworks condition.

    I'm so glad you've done this review Sam...as the Castle was my favourite class of loco. It certainly has a great finish, and the design has been faithfully reproduced, however, the sound which I appreciate it's 00 scale, is nowhere accurate for this loco. The exhaust even when starting off has a distinctive wheeze before it's famous GWR Bark, and this had nothing near to it.....Keep up the great work Sam....Regards...Bob

    Here's four locomotives Bachmann makes you could use in your American shunting session, the EMD GP7 & GP9, and the Alco RS-3 and S4, I thought of these since they were used as both shunting engines and mainline engines, this way they could make their own trains and pull them on the mainlines

    Nice one, Sam. I actually bought this Castle for my wife. Paid £139 for the TTS version brand new around end of March this year. I think its a very good model and I thought it was quite weighty. Some of the TTS sounds are a bit gimmicky but you can reduce the volumn via dcc if you want. Its a lovely smooth runner as well.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate! £139 sound very good to me - fantastic for that price really! Yes that is true - it's great to have the choice to alter the levels!

    The Hornby retooled Castles and Kings are little short of superb - very smooth, quiet runners, with a decent haulage capacity and an almost excessive speed capability - permitting you to 'tone them down', effectively leaving something - quite a lot actually!! - in reserve.

    Apparently they would use the coal shovel to fry food, they would sterilise the shovel using the cylinder drain cox and cook it in the heat of the firebox! Jeremey Clarkson tried to cook kippers on tornado (during top gear race to the north) and the kippers flew into the firebox.

    One thing to keep in mind, this model was first released in 2010 and they haven't added any additional paint detail let alone on the inside motion or anywhere else since.
    I wouldn't really compare it to the king... They are two very different prototypes although they look very much similar.
    Hornby did specific detail differences for specific batches of the prototype, e. G. Lubricator, double chimney etc etc, this one being a fairly early example of the class (and the fact it's in br early) it won't have either of those things... The prototypes were modified slightly after the br early period here.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot for the comment - this is true, for a 2010 model, the detail is very impressive.... though the price is all the more bemusing, being that it's an older model. I thought the King was the most reasonable engine for comparison - given the similar size, the TTS and the similar livery!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    I'm not a GWR fan, however.... I can appreciate the beauty and technological superiority (at the time) of the Castles. Having said that (in reality), many crews preferred Castles to the Kings...as they regarded Kings as a "Super Castle".
    In model form...in must admit, in terms of your reviews, they seem to be lacking somewhat, in comparison.
    Keep up the good work Mr Sam! 👍

    I love the castle class, love the Cornish riviera set up with it, just a shame that the loco wasn’t in GWR livery ;) by the way, Devizes is pronounced Dev-eye-zes, it’s a town in Wiltshire not far from where I live. Reverend W Awdry’s son Christopher was born there. Keep the faith - Callum

    Lovely looking engine Sam. I totally agree with you about the RRP issue, plus for that amount of money I would expect a better sound chip system. The Hornby TTS system on a steam engine model seems inferior to the old LokSound v4 system. Yes the old system was a tad more expensive but had a much better sync to the sounds in my opinion. That's probably why I keep picking those up & renaming & numbering them to other engines.

    • @SamsTrains

    What a superb loco Sam! Ticks all the boxes apart from the Value for Money, sadly. Is well out of my price range at the moment. Passed the crawl test over the express points with flying colours. I once heard from a former engine driver who ran a model railway shop some years ago now that GWR stood for "God's Wonderful Railway"! Another model shop owner thought it stood for "Gresley Was Right"! You choose! Thanks for all you do in the world of model railways. It's good to get sound opinion in an industry where you have to spend your money wisely. Peter.

    Looks good and I would expect it to for that price! I have been having a look at pictures of the real engines of this class and can't see where that broken part would have come from either. Seems I am lucky with Railmaster as it goes fine for me. If I do have issues it is 'unable to locate a controller'. Then it is time to restart the program. I am waiting for a DCC sound gandy dancer.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ian - absolutely, it's a good job the model lives up to expectations set by the price tag! Yes it's very strange about the step!
      Since I filmed this, I've wiped the railmaster PC and reinstalled everything - it's now much much more responsive!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    Hi Sam - to me, one of the best features of DCC models is the ability to program realistically slow acceleration and deceleration speeds - it just looks fantastic, and coupled with TTS sound it's even better - that slow chuffing and a bit of wheel slip - so not sure why you never use it?

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that's very true - that is a wonderful feature! I don't use it usually due to cost - it'd cost me about £6k to convert all of my engines, and it's not necessary for most reviews!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    • @SuperJ333
      @SuperJ333 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah - I think we may have got our lines crossed, because I'm not sure what that means - I just meant when reviewing a DCC fitted / TTS loco, like the one in this video, all you have to do is push 2 buttons on the digital controller to program slower acceleration and declaration for that loco - as you know - it doesn't cost anything...

  • @TomPrickVixen
    @TomPrickVixen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not sure that step (fallen off part) belongs to this loco! The Castles doesn't have extra steps on their front (or buffer beam), my ("new") A1 for example; had an extra loose cab door in the box that doesn't even matched to the loco (only in color), and both of its doors was on, so an unknown extra...

    • @SamsTrains

    Great video Sam. You can alter the sound levels on your Locos to suit your taste by altering one of the CV's. You probably know this. I think the TTS is not too bad a sound for the money and thought that all Locos fitted with it are automatically digital.ie they have a chip fitted as a matter of course. Am I right in this? If so then I suppose once you factor in a chip and sound decoder plus speaker the price climbs. Really enjoy your videos mate!😎🇦🇺😀

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Stephen - yes that's very true, I should have mentioned that - although on this Castle, the adjustments were pretty much spot on already! Yes the sound comes from the digital decoder - but we know that the retail price of the decoder and speaker is only about £30 - so it's not as much as we all first thought!

    Hi Sam I love your reviews on locos etc very fair . do you ever sell your locos as I am after Earl of St Germans with tts sound or Pendennis castle both with GWR or early BR crests I’m 78 years old and have just started to get back into model railways after 45 years and buying new gear phew very expensive, but a great hobby. as a boy in the school holidays I use to sneak in to Truro engine sheds and help to polish the nameplates etc and get a tanner {sixpence} , so I’m after either of these locos as at one time or other I have cleaned these . I have tried every place that I can but have not been able to get one as yet, please can you help .many thanks Roy

      Hmmm, I don't think so actually - because the rankings have changed now! I'm also a lot more harsh on the value for money, and now that the prices have gone up, I don't think it'd get a perfect value score!

    Hey Sam this is an old video, but I have a Hornby Castle from 2017 I think? And I have a problem where coming out of a right hand 3rd radius curve (i dont have any other sizes) the front pony truck will always derail. It catches on something on the loco and I cant figure out what.
    It does not derail on left hand curves though, only right hand.
    Have you had this problem at all? And do you know a way to fix it? Thanks!

    Nice review Sam. I agree, with your views on pricing. I think the price reflects the pricing policy industry wide. In Hornby’s case, I think it is in many respects to its expensive management and the use of equally expensive advisors. An £18 million loan, indicated a failing organisation that lives in a self imposed bubble! Pity really!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot Gary - yes I agree it does - and I take issue with that too, haha! Yes it's a real shame... but lower prices would help to make the hobby less niche... if locos went back towards pocket money levels, I'm certain the level of interest from younger people would rise, and more units would sell!

    Hey Sam
    I was wondering if you had a loco that was dcc fitted as new, could you just unplug the decoder inside it and turn it into a normal dc loco?
    Mainly because there is a loco I've been looking at that i can only find dcc fitted and we only have dc.
    Thanks in advance

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Connor - yes you can absolutely do that - what you will need is a DC blanking plug, which plugs into the socket rather than the decoder. You can pick them up cheap on ebay. If you don't want to spend the money, you can hardwire the motor straight to the pickups!

  • @GolfAlphaFoxtrot216

    I admit I don't have the King (yet), but have seen several in the flesh. I cannot agree that the Castle is less detailed. As you rightly point out the king might appear to have more surface 'detail' (like cab vents and bogie spring), but in reality Hornby have compromised in some areas. A key example is that some of the ATC pipework in front of the cab is moulded on the king (hangover from 'design clever'), whereas it is a curved 'loop' of wire on the Castle. For me a retrograde step on the King having shown it 'can be done' on the castle. Also Hornby have at least two cab front tools for the castle, one with the windscreen wipers (and slightly larger windows) and one without. Ironically for 5050, the windows should the larger/wiper fitted ones; Hornby have used the wrong tooling for this diagram (not the first time someone has failed to pay due attention in selecting tooling). Having performed major surgery on the castle I can confirm the number of individual parts is vast - check out the ATC conduit on the running plate - the conduit itself is metal, with each of the little brackets being separately fitted parts. I would suspect that the castle probably has more individual components than the King, being designed during the Sanda Kan era; the price doubtless reflects the fact that the model was not designed in the current economic conditions.
    Finally, in terms of value for money, the RRP of the Castle R3383TTS is £200.99, while the King R3384TTS RRP is £209.99, so the castle IS actually a little cheaper.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much for your comment - that makes for very interesting reading! That's interesting regarding the price - when I bought my kind, the RRP was much less than this - Hornby must have put the prices up again!!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)
