Haven't seen it in the comments so far, so here we go. Basically the song itself, or in the very least the chorus, is a reference to a Korean children's song. The name escapes me, but in the song there is a lyric about how the monkey's bottom is red. Hyuna includes this lyric and goes even further to then include a line about how she is red, which I imagine is why we see so many red items (lipstick, glitter, etc) in connection to her and I assume works as another reference using red as a play on words for shy. Though that last part can easily be incorrect, as I havent looked into the translated or original lyrics yet to be honest. Anyway, point being, it is a play off words kind of song, playing around with something familiar to Korean culture and those of age who knew or remembered the song. If I recall there was mixed reactions, since it was based in something relating to children. Hyuna, however, is known best for her scandalous and/or outlandish concepts, so while some may have felt offense for that specific reason, others most likely felt it was just "attention seeking" or "clever and interesting" being Hyuna. Eithet way, as it was meant to outside of biased opinions, the song recieved attention, which in turn gained her more views outside her fandom and continuous recognition.

2:39 i love this part of the "Red" video because usually in the music videos women are the ones in the cage, dancing or moving seductively. BUT Hyuna was like _hell no IM A BOSS HERE_ . i love her for doing that. every time she shows that women should be confident and know their place but sadly ppl just look at her body and not the message.
SO THE BACKSTORY ON THE LYRICS IS:
the lyrics are a twist on an old Korean nursery rhyme giving it a new meaning. For example how Eminem put a spin on the rhyme mockingbird and made the rap song about it. This is just the poppy and Korean version of that.
