I just wanted to thank you for your video. Using the catch point and shaving/shaping the nail has been a game changer for us!! Our dog was a rescue from overseas and arrived on the plane with bleeding pulsing quicked nails on every toe. She was extremely traumatized and in pain, and wouldn't let us near her feet for weeks. Then she finally trusted us enough, and I blew it, not having good technique or knowing how to find the quick. It was a nightmare trying to maintain her nails for YEARS and we started having to sedate her for nail trims.
I finally found your video and have been trimming every 2-4 weeks rebuilding her trust for the past 6 months. It's still a struggle, and a 2 person job (hubby holds her and feeds her endless treats lol), but she's come a long way and will actually stay calm through a paw or 2. I feel so much more confident and even helped my mom trim her dog's nails. I see the light at the end of the tunnel and I know eventually we'll get to a point where she just sits for her trim without a fuss. I have also noticed that if we get off schedule and her nails start to get long, the toe joints get tender and she gets extra stressed about the next trim. So if someone has a dog that is flinching away, that toe or foot just needs extra patience. I hope my story is encouragement for others.
What a gorgeous well behaved dog
Thanks for watching
She is soooo calm. Almost unbelievable :)
She is a very calm dog, but we work consistently on nail trimming with our dogs so they can be calm and tolerant of handling and nail trims!
I could see the spot y'all were talking about, just so you know. Thank you for being so through with your descriptions on your tutorial.
By far the BEST nail trimming video ever!
Lol no. Far from it. So much rambling and a dog will not tolerate what she’s doing with the clippers and taking so long messing with each nail
Thank you so very much! This is the BEST video on dog nail clipping I have found.
Thanks for watching and being a fan!!
I followed your advice and I did my dog’s nails today !! He did really well and I am saving $$$ but the big plus is I can check the nails more often and get them to recede! So thank you !!
You are so very welcome! This makes us so happy to hear that you are having such great success with your dog and their nail trims!
I really appreciate this video. I feel like I truly understand how to clip nails properly. I am looking forward to watching your other videos.
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful!
This works for me, very informative. Gorgeous dog:)
Thank you! ☺️ Glad you enjoyed the videos!
Wow!!!!! Great video! Very clear instruction & nice video job as well...soooo calm and patient and such a sweet dog....Our almost 5 month old GSP will almost begrudgingly, let us hold her paw very gently, but nail trims are misery for all! Hope we will some day get her like Quest! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Lovely to see how much that dog trusts you. You must have a good track record of not hitting the quick. Does exposing the quick like that make it uncomfortable for them to walk though? I need to shorten my rescues quicks, but don’t want him to have to feel the quick as he walks.
Your nail trimming video is the best of all. Thank you for the instructions!
hello just have to tell you great video.I've just been watching several videos on youtube about clipping dog nails and your video has to be the best one yet great clear explanation and demonstration camera shots show clearly how to do it (once focused lol)
Paul
So glad I clicked on your video - very thorough - I may have to attempt it with my very calm Plott. Thanks.
Thank you for being so detailed!
Glad I found this video. Great tips! I will be looking for a video with a less compliant dog though because didn't help with my situation. I have a basset hound mix, he is 11 yrs old and I have not had him all of his life. He has high anxiety with nail clipping and I dont have the strength to keep him secure as you said.
What a good dog
I love your dog!
Thank you so much.
Just subbed to your page! Love all the informative videos! Thank you!
Mountain Trail Homestead thanks for watching and subscribing we really appreciate it!
Looked at your recommended list and clicked on the clippers which took me to Amazon but they are different clippers.Really enjoy your videos and being a GSP owner myself I am partial to them and standing stone kennels.
Just look for Safari brand clippers. Get the green ones as shown. They are the best you can get and even all the pros use them.
Thank you so much for the information! I was able to cut 12 of Chuly's nails until she screamed.
Keep it up! The more you trim them, the easier it gets.
Great work. Thank you. Any suggestions for a good pair of scissors ?
Great video! Thx! How about dew claws? Would you consider this to be a traditional nail trim or alternative cut line?
So many great tips. Thank you! And what an incredibly good and cute pup 😊
Really good video... My question is how do you trim the inner nail, thumb looking nail?
Can y’all make a video on how you give your dogs baths, and what you use please ?
I had watched the older video with Quest before we got our GSP and we’ve been flipping him over on his back like this since he was a pup so he’d get used to it. He’s almost 7 months old now and nail trims are a breeze! He basically falls asleep every time.
Great video! My black nailed dog doesn't seem to have that little ridge on the base of his nail. Do you have a recommendation for this situation? His clear nailed brother does have that ridge at the base of his nail.🤔
It’s important for owners to know that 99% of dogs won’t tolerate clipping, especially not the way it’s being done here. The clippers being rubbed around their nails and played with is incredibly scary to them. The nails need to be cut quickly or the dog gets even more scared and stressed.
I will be a subscriber. Thank you 🙏🏽
Your video is awesome but I was wondering if a large safari clipper will do the job? I'm getting a standard poodle and I'm going to foster a brown lab soon...I have hand problems so I thought the bigger one would be better? Can I use a nail file for my dog to get used to the nail touching? Should I get the smaller one too? Both dogs will be puppies!
How do you get them short if they are really long? In one trimming you can only so to the quick, does the quick then retract a little so you could trim again soon and get them under control?
Grinding will be the key to this!
I have a 13wk old griffon. I’ve trimmed her nails like you recommend since she came home at 8 weeks, every week. She fights me and whines the whole time. I can calm her but as soon as I start trimming again she’s struggling. She’s getting stronger and it’s getting harder. She has made a little progress on how she handles it but not enough to balance out her increasing strength. Do I just keep on trucking every week and she’ll get better or is there something else I should be doing?
How do you do the dew claws on a small hairy dog? Big dogs are always the ones being shown. Great video by the way. I noticed you went back on the first nail because it wasn’t short enough. Do you have to go shorter? Can you leave it after the first cut.? I get so sweaty doing this. I have been doing it for years. It’s the hardest part of trimming a pup. Beautiful German wired hair Pointer by the way. Does she hunt?
The angle you are referring to, is a chamfer, the catch is a mismatch step
Thanks for the lesson 🤗. My 7 month old black Labrador has dew claws. Are they trimmed the same way? I am very green with nail trimming
I'm not a professional, but both my dogs have dew claws. We trim them the same way.
Yeah, the shirt, collar and your ink all match.
How to you suggest to use the hand nail files?
I have been using calipers and then shape the edges with the file afterwards.
Use files for acrylic nails instead, they will last longer.
The dog is remarkably good, please give lots of yummy rewards.
Where would I get that dog collar
Great video. Where did you get that collar? It would look great on my girl.
We sell them on standingstonekennels.com
StandingStoneKennels thank you
Aaaw such a lovely girl!
What do I do when he scratches at his kennel and keeps his nails trimmed down themself.
I've tried the clicker and treats to get Remy acclimated to clippers and the drimmel. It's a fight! He screams like a banshee and bucks like a bull. I have to lay on him.
Sorry to hear that. Have you tried with him standing?
@@StandingStoneKennels sitting, standing, laying down. He wants no part of it. I give him treats with his paw in my hand with the drimmel on or clippers touching him he's fine, but once I put one of them on a nail he screams and runs. Very dramatic lol. He is 5.5 months old so hopefully he'll get better.
Mindy Russell - try giving your dog “Rescue Remedy”. It is a naturopathic remedy for dogs (and people) when they are in a stressful situation or have suffered a trauma. You can purchase this “tincture” at a health food/natural health store. There are 2 kinds - one which has an alcohol base (the original formulation) and one made specifically for animals which has no alcohol. I have used both types for my dog. I prefer the original “tincture” as it is just dropped into her mouth. The one for animals is to be administered on a treat or put in their food/water. It is a bit more inconvenient if you are dealing with an acute situation where you need immediate treatment for fear/anxiety/trauma, etc. It might be advantageous when you can plan to offset or prevent a stressful situation beforehand. Anyway - “Rescue Remedy” is made by (I believe) the Bosch company and is the brand I choose to use for myself and my dog. I hope this helps. The best of luck with your puppy.
👵🏻🐾💕🇨🇦
I give my dog a bone, he is distracted and I can do the nails with a grinder.
How about when the dog bites you? I’d like to trim, however can’t stand being bitten or just mouthed. Don’t mind doing it, or the “stuff” they have between their toes from the dog run. Oh yeah, it rained, first time in south Texas. Have you Seen! how big and how many teeth they have!? YIKES!!
Isn’t weekly a little excessive?
Yes! There is ZERO reason to do this weekly. The nail doesn’t grow enough in just one week.
What do you do if you accidently quick the nail?
Hurry and put the nail in cornstarch or styptic powder and hold gently until all bleeding has stopped.
Informative video, but the metal piece "nail guard" is to prevent cut nails falling all over the place and not to indicate cutting length, but this misinformation is been spread in various - even from dog groomers - videos on TH-cam. 😂
Thanks for sharing
Quest is such a good girl
what do you do if your dog will not lay on its back
Train them so they do.
When he said “Blair Witch Project” it felt like inception because she definitely reminds me of Katie from Paranormal Activity
This is a good demo, however most dogs won't just lay there while the shaving occurs
Then work to train your dog so they do. It takes intentional effort and time.
Exactly
The camera guy wants to be in front of the camera. Too distracting; him interrupting you.
He is so behaved I can’t get my dog well behaved like that
Now demonstrate this with an animal that’s agitated and pulling! This video does not help my situation
I would subscribe if you did the nail cutting on an average dog. Let’s have some real life normal dog issues with nail clipping. Maybe you have a video more realistic that would be more beneficial to the average viewer. All in all it is a like.
Here is an entire playlist of trimming different dogs nails and how they behave. Thanks for tuning in.
Not watching a 25 minute video ok how to trim dog nails
It’s because they don’t stop rambling and don’t edit their videos. I couldn’t watch it either.
Too rough
Camera out of focus drives me crazy. I do not care for cameraman comments.
Thanks for watching!
Not trying to be rude but you really need to edit your videos before publishing. It’s frustrating watching a video trying to learn an important skill but having to get thru the cameraman trying to figure out what he’s doing throughout and a lot of rambling by the both of you. Imagine if someone is in the process of doing their dog’s nails but have to stop everything continuously for the video to just get to the point?
Find another video then instead of putting down the hard work that these two did together
Very annoying to watch, might be funny for those participating in the videos process but super annoying trying to watch
Thanks for watching
