I help at an English school in Laos. We decided to treat the students - they’d passed their exams - so we’ll hire some tuk-tuks and go to the Elephant Sanctuary for a picnic. Ajan Seng suggests we buy food from the morning market. “kin kin laiy laiy” I croaked in agreement. Ajan Seng, like most of our teachers is a good Buddhist boy. A list is composed. (Our school is run by falang so lists are the norm.) Ajan Seng starts: “Frog, Sticky rice, Gai, bamboo shoots…” “yes” I say - making a note of the mounting kip. “Is that it?” “Oh” Seng added “we need suffering”. “Ah, yes, suffering” I echoed. Not sure how we would implement that. The school has governance, child safety, and other rules. Suffering? I know this is a crucial tenant of Buddhism - but I want a fun picnic. “We cannot do suffering!” “Suffering boh dai, boh mii” I add in my weak Lao. “No, we need suffering!” Seng insisted. I was a bit concerned. All Lao I’ve met are good natured and easy going, stoic maybe, lazy perhaps, but never violent. May be Seng was ill. I called in the headmistress and the trustees. “What’s wrong with Ajan Seng - he is losing the plot!” Another Lao teacher explains. “Oh soft drinks! He wants soft drinks!”

I’m learning to speak the Lao language. Slowly. We were out walking to eat food. “What are we doing?” I ask. “ຍ່າງກິນເຂົ້າ” comes the reply. (walk eat rice) I thank him. (Sometimes I am rude and say “ຂ້ອຍຊັງເຈົ້າ” as a reply. (I hate you) So much more satisfying than “ຂອບໃຈຫຼາຍໆ” (thank you very much) We come to the bamboo bridge. (Not blidge) in the UNESCO heritage (not helitidge) city of Luang Pra Bang. Soon we will have food. We pass by some lads chatting. I hear “ບໍ່ຮູ້”. “Bow who?” “Bow who? What does that mean?” “Don’t know!” came my friend’s prompt reply. “You must know! I have even heard you use it - Bow who?” “Don’t know!” came a terse reply. “You sure?” “Don’t know!” came a curt reply. We’re quiet for a few minutes. I must have upset him. I know Lao people go quiet if there’s any confrontation about. “Bow who?” “Don’t know!” ( A pair of dark brown eyes glowered at me.) Then it dawned on me!
