Metal pipe will break when frozen. Pex piping will expand and contract with freeze thaw cycles. If for some reason your generator were to fail and you used pex, all you would have to do is thaw the pipe instead of replacing it. I have a wood boiler with a pump to circulate the water. There is an inverter tied to a battery always charged to fall back onto if there is a power outage.
great idea for a watering system... I love the cycling and recycling of water so include filtering that would complete it for me... thanks for sharing... love your ideas, long time follower of your videos... thanks again, william, owner of urban gardening unlimited.
I installed these in my pig pen not sure if their using them might try the peanut butter thing i gave one to a friend i was curious to see if a dog would use it and low and behold it drinks from it so ill be setting it up for my dogs too
Nice work. While they're short you could make the pallet a bit more grippy for their hooves.. saw him slipping a bit.. they might drink more with sure footing. Thanks for a cool video.
Did the -30 - -50 temps last winter freeze this system up? I'm in WI, I'd like to implement a similar system but those low temps last year made me think it would freeze up still, even with the moving water.
Curious....and mostly because this is on my list for 2018....is this holding up to these frigid temps? How are you keeping this liquid? What heater do you use to heat the water? What pump do you use? How big a tank are you using? Hauling water in winter is a nightmare!
Seems like the hogs like the pipe insulation as well :) Have you considered adding a small solar and battery setup to make sure the pump and heater doesn't quit on a power failure? Even a decent sized computer UPS might work.
Great system. Will the goats be in the barn in the future? I see you had Summy out helping at the end. Looks like Allie and Cookie Dough are your permanent helpers, like it or not!!
use pex pipe it is far cheaper and can take being frozen and never brake, unlike pvc, a sytem like that don't work here were our winters are long and weeks at a time of -30 to -40 but it is close to what works, and has for me for over 37 years, what is filling your drum automatically? even today we are still at -6 the pigs and chickens will rip the foam all a part
I'm a plumber so I really think you did a great job!!!
Just FYI, marshmallow cream works really well to teach pigs to use the pig nipples. That's how I trained my AGH's to drink from them.
I hope summer comes to you quickly and last a long time my friend

That's a great system! I may have to implement something like this when I get our new goat and chicken barn up.

Some river stone would be nice in that area

Wow, it does get cold in Michigan. Great system.
Nice barn bro and really nice setup👍
What pump and water heater do you use I’m going to make one.
Do you have a link to how you keep this flowing water hot enough not to freeze, and your pump!? Thanks!
Sorry if I overlooked it...any thoughts on what type/size of pump would be best for this system? Thanks!

Rivers of water !!! Awesome stuff.
Im also trying to build water system, i wanna put 50 gallon water and portable transfer pump for returning water pipe, what do you think will it be ok

+TheGasPumper TJAT CIRCUIT Is HOOKED Up THE THE WHOLE House GENERATOR BUT IN The Future I Want To MAKE THE WHOLE BARN RUN Off Of solar/Wind For sure
Very cool. I'm thinking of DIY grid-assist solar myself. Also, scotch good. Keyboard bad. :) Rock on!
Not just a free range chicken but also a free range pig, 😍
That's genius.
The little guy wasn't too happy being hugged.
what about a french drain under the water dispenser?

Goats are in the barn now having their babies:) They will stay there during milking season this summer and then we will breed them again in the fall.
do the pigs & goats get along?
Cut some pvc pipe along the length and place that over the foam. They will have a tougher time tearing everything apart.
+Marcus Kloepping that is a great idea, thanks!
Did you change the pump yet?
What are the odds of them eatingthe insulation? This is a cool system. Kudos
+Thorzhammer70 KY the odds are 100%, they already ate it:)
Withthe water being heated and constant flow, it may not freeze. Really not sure.
looks like a sharp angle on the spout

Great solution.
Have you considered what's going to happen if you lose power and your pump isn't running
+A.L.L. Firewood my world will end:) but I have an automatic generator, thankfully
Scolding a hog
That's what buckets are for lol
I think you need at least a 300 or higher heater! It be worth while to add a ground to the water line!
I think you need to reduce the flow
Water pressure looks a bit high can you slow the pump a bit ?
He mentioned that in an earlier video. He is going to get a pump better suited for this system. This is just one he had on hand.
you mite want to think of away to get sloped water to drain
lol....great info...funny pigs
that oughta keep the pigpen less of a stye .ha. why cast iron is that the normal thing that people use for this because of stronger.
it's not of
You just going to put a point out there?
Looks like the ripped off some of your insulation too.
Unfortunately, the pigs will have ALL the pipe insulation off in no time. They are curious animals and don't leave stuff alone.
So you want your animals dinking rust
