I usualy run early morning (3-4 am). Bless the car drivers who stop at junctions and wait to let me run over, but for most of the year it's too dark for me to see into the car, so I can't make eye contact and be sure of their intention. Instead I'm left for 30 seconds or so stood at the junction, not knowing if the driver is waving their arms at me to cross, or distracted on the mobile phone.

Two: 1. Runners who wear earbuds and don't pay attention to traffic ( or me when I am cycling), simply jumping out on the road without looking. 2. Pedestrians or other runners coming in the opposite direction, who walk/run side by side and don't make room, on a narrow path or tight sidewalk with no extra side space other than the busy road.

Three runners (or power walkers) running, side by side, towards you, talking and they don't move out of the way until you are "on top of them".

Here in California, it’s culturally considered weird to acknowledge strangers upon passing them. It happens, but it’s not common. I’ve never had a runner acknowledge me in any way, and I haven’t initiated, either. Mostly we try to avoid eye contact while passing. So, I wouldn’t think it’s bad etiquette at all if another runner didn’t acknowledge me! In fact, I would be annoyed if they said hello, because I want to stay focused and preserve my breath 😅

That's honestly my only explanation. Around my area, I've had nothing but super nice/normal interactions with runners & bikers 😃

I live in the middle of nowhere so usually the annoying thing is cars. Especially some lorry drivers who don't leave big enough of a space between and you get hit by the wind or if you have bad luck stones. Summer annoying thing is horseflies though. This year they're everywhere thanks to a heatwave (annoying) so any kind of exercise outside is a frigging race. I was supposed to have a nice walk which ended up being a bloody sprint because of the amount of mosquitoes and horseflies. Which was especially annoying since it was 27C and humid, so... awful "walk". I counted 17 horselfy bites after 45min outside one day so... Surprisingly I've started to bike this year since it's too fast for the bugs. =D

Pet peeve of mine is running friends that claim to you that they are "not doing so well with fitness", "totally off form lately" or "I'm not very fast, you'll easily beat me" then proceed to consistently just annihilate any time, PB or pace you do and either on the same route, anywhere and at anytime. Like, don't make out you're slower than me when it's quite clear that you're a much quicker or fitter runner than me. It's not going to hurt my feelings - we all run at different speeds and strides. As someone mentioned dogs .... I absolutely HATE unleashed dogs. Especially when the owner is not in sight.
I do not know, and frankly don't care if the owner ASSUMES that the dog will be nice to everyone and there will be no runners or cyclists who might feel uncomfortable or even genuinely scared. I do not know where the dog comes from, how it will act around me running or cycling, and I had occasional run-ins with dogs who barked or even chased me for a while.
Now I am generally a fan of doggos and puppers and everything in between, but even then I sometimes get uncomfortable about this, especially if it's not obvious if the dogs want to play or are upset. And imagining someone who is struggling with a fear of dogs running into those situations... I think it should be common sense to AT LEAST have your dog in sight when outdoors, or on a leash, especially in areas with lots of foot traffic, runners or cyclists...
well, that was quite a ramble, I know ... but this really irritates me at times :-D

Since you mentioned cars, one that can go beyond annoying and into downright troubling: drivers who slow down to shout at you. I know several ladies that have been catcalled, and as an overweight male, I've gotten several "Run, Forrest, run!"s and one "Faster, fat ass!" Try and shrug it off, but it is humiliating.

That's horrible, Jeff, and we're so sorry to hear this has happened to you! We made a video recently about street harassment as this is something that seems to have increased during lockdown. We're hoping that by highlighting the issue more can be done to stop it happening.

I find this annoying - running a loop around my local lake I always acknowledge other runners with a wave. But if we are running the loop in opposite directions and pass each other multiple times I’m always thinking “Do I wave again? Is once enough? I don’t want to be rude, but maybe more than once is creepy? Did they even get a good enough look at me to realize I am the same guy? “. I know, I’m probably overthinking it. I am a runner literally annoying myself.

I run with my four legged pal on a short lead, so when I see someone coming towards me I put myself between them and the woofer out of courtesy. I’ve had a couple of people get upset because they have to go on the “ wrong side” of the path for me to pass….most people say thanks though…
Runner or not I think whining people are just going to whine no matter how much you try to do the better thing. Xx

A wet, rainy day and we were doing 1000m reps on a river bank loop. I pulled left to pass a guy on an uphill stretch. He held his finger on his right nostril and blew a major snot out the left right into my chest. That was annoying.

You could try making a noise on your approach, either a cough, saying 'on your left' or 'on your right' or make your footsteps louder? I think a lot of people have had this though, where you give someone the fright of their life running past them 😂

Here in France we actually have direction signs on paths but what a waste of paint, if there's one thing the French hate, is being told what side they should be on. Imagine if cars did the same, oh wait, did I mention I live in France 🤣

I'm going to rant now...so maybe stick on the kettle and make yourself a cup of tea, which you can then spit out cartoon style, as I call out some of our fellow runners.
OK, here goes, what really gets me annoyed about other runners, are the (deep breath Donal) people who rock up 5 mins before the off at a Parkrun. They don't bother being there on time for the Race directors brief, try every week for a PB and so get annoyed at slower runners near the start. Finish, get their token scanned and head straight for their cars and f*** off with out a thank you to anyone.
We all know and saw them, they've never volunteered and so miss out on craic at set up and afterwards. Honestly folks, if you've never volunteered at your local Parkrun make a point of doing so when they return. Volunteer say once every 10 runs, you'll thank me once you've done Marshall or Tail walker and witnessed the true Parkrun spirit in action.
I really miss Parkruns, the nervous energy of the newbies, the hesitant but proud hand raised in reply to "any milestoners here today", smiling as you watch a parent 'let' their kid beat them and seeing that extra spurt in responce to your shout of encouragement at the end.
Actually now I think about it, maybe I should feel sorry for those runners who just turn up, run and leave; look at all that they miss out on. But seriously folks, do volunteer at your local Parkrun. Now wipe up that tea and have an extra biscuit next time, you're a runner afterall and it's carb loading.

Hmmmmm ...... I have never done a Parkrun. I bought the armband last year, just before closedown.
I live in Denmark, where Parkrun started up again last month. Still haven't been there ..... 😖 .... My problem is, that I live quite far away from my nearest Parkrun. To be there at nine o'clock, I have to get up at 6 and spend more than 1½ hour on public transport.
I really want to go - but I think it is very unlikely that I will ever volunteer. Well, at least not if it means that I'll have to come earlier.
I would feel very uncomfortable if anyone should criticise me for this.
But I would love to be sociable after the run ..... if I ever make it to Parkrun. Usually I get up around 9. So getting up at 6 to go to Parkrun ..... not se easy. 😁

    • @abizern665
      @abizern665 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The first time I volunteered, I was the tail walker. It really humbles you to see the parkrun spirit when somebody just does their best to get around and how happy they are when they finish in whatever time. To see the encouragement of the marshalls towards the runners and especially the last runner. I never felt bad about not getting a best time after experiencing that, and I still haven't broken 30 minutes.
