    As a Electronics Engineer I have built many circuits in the past but this is the first time I have a built a ultrasonic Audio laser. I had a bit of trouble to get it to work using the Mic4427 driver chip so I used the L293DNE driver chip instead which has a much higher working voltage of 36v compared to 18v of the MIC4427 and the circuit works fine now I also replaced the preamplifier chip with the TL082 which is capable of operating of a split rail voltage supply. In the future I might use the raspberry pi pico which run at 100Mhz to upgrade the power and sound quality of the Ultrasonic audio laser further.

      Hi John, I'm making one of these for a university project and I decided to take your advice here and use a raspberry pi pico microcontroller! I'm very new to electronics and coding so I'm having a bit of a problem.
      With the .cpp file you get from github do I need to change the #include directories from 'arduino' and 'stm35 etc' to a header for the pi pico instead?
      Any help would be appreciated greatly!
      Thanks, Luke

      @@CaptainKandi You might have resolved the issue by now or moved on if it’s a project. But you would need to use pico-specific DMA and ADC libraries, as I doubt the functions / arguments are portable.

      ;version 4
      (if (and (soundp *track*)(= *sound-srate* 384000))
      (osc-pulse 40000 *track*)
      "Error.\
      Input must be a mono track\
      with 3,840,000 Hz sample rate.")

    Thanks for the fun project. It was quite painful to find the proper stm32adc lib, but eventually it worked. Maybe I messed something up in the soldering, but the sound is quiet, directionality is somewhat present but it's more of a bad speaker with noisy audio than an audio laser. At 18volts tc4427 overheats really quickly, so I had to wind down it a bit to have at least several minutes of working time. Probably I'll look for different components and try building v2 when I have some spare time.

At 18volts tc4427 overheats really quickly". I have managed to burn a few of tc4427. The weird thing is that he managed to make it work quite ok. Really great project. Some comments:
    this MCU is plenty fast for high quality sounds, it just needs to be programmed right. Arduino is crap for performance.
    STM32 uC have tons of timer modes, it could be used much more efficiently.
    Also the ADC, your code uses DMA but for one sample... so the interrupt rate is high. Would be much better to use DMA ADC to fetch a few KB samples at a time, then compute the expected response PWM required in a buffer and use another timer to schedule appropriate output frequency changes at the correct rate.
    All I am saying is that the code is way sub-optimal and could show much more improvement before anything hardware needs tweaking.

    There are other sound focusing videos using noise cancelation by generating signals that are inaudible to the human ear. The 2 signals are not the the same and when the signals reach the focal point only the difference in the signals are amplified. The focal point could have unthinkable amplitude of power and no one would even be aware of it. Your design could be the delivery device.

But for this pin, I would swap the last two arguments in the map() function for duty cycle which would invert the PWM output. First pin duty cycle: map(soundInput, 0, 4095, 0, overflow);. Second pin duty cycle: map(soundInput, 0, 4095, overflow, 0);. Or something like that.

      I have literally no experience in this, but I'd imagine you could get something like that working just with a directional beam pointed at the ears as long as its quiet enough. If its too loud the demodulated audio would bounce off your head and maybe allow other people to hear it, but quiet enough and maybe it'd only be audible in a small area around your ears, although it's not something I'd trust for privacy like headphones with this approach. Something work testing out lmk if you try anything

    The apparent bass response is miserable, but I suspect this may be caused by the microphone used to listen to it. Is bass response better to the human ear? What can be done to improve it? I have heard professionally made "Sound Lasers" that have impeccable bass but I suspect these are implemented as the dual beam interference type.

    • @kawrx2002
      @kawrx2002 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m wondering that also. I built this project (perf board prototype and PCB), but used a TLC 272 for the pre amp. Just with experimentation, bass sounded a little better by using a higher value cap for C3. I know other parametric speakers use different modulation, and possibly different filtering. I can also say the bass response is better on my PCB board, where I have them placed closer together (and many more) than on the perf board.

    • @MeanGeneHacks
      @MeanGeneHacks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure, its a bit tricky because the audio is quite directional and only can be heard when it hits something. And even after it hits something, its not very loud, so the ideal way would probably be to aim directly at the microphone or aim at a flat surface very close to the microphone.

      Unfortunately, thats very unlikely. The Nano is an 8-bit MCU that runs at 16Mhz. For comparison, the MCU I used in the video is 32-bit running at 72Mhz. I don't think you would be able to process the incoming audio fast enough to output a modulated 40Khz wave on an Arudino Nano using the method & code from the video.

Would that be an improvement or a downgrade? also what opamp would you recomend since you say there are better options? I have some IRLZ34N lying arround if those are any good. • @MeanGeneHacks
      @MeanGeneHacks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The beam width is mostly dictated by the parameters of the ultrasonic transducer you are using. Most 40kHz transducers will have similar beam widths. If you want a wider beam, you can go to 25kHz transducer, but you'll have to change the code so that the new modulated base signal matches.

      Try any one of the STM32 high performance series. They would give you a significant boost in sample rate (audio quality): www.st.com/en/microcontrollers-microprocessors/stm32-high-performance-mcus.html Or if you are on a budget, a good replacement would be the STM32F411CeU6. They are under $5 and are faster than the MCU I used.

    Can you create a circuit that converts the ultrasound into regular audio? I have five to seven directional speakers aimed at my house that are used as part of an online broadcast in extortion racket. In addition they use surveillance equipment illegally installed in my house to sim the directional speakers. An antenna system with an ultrasound and frequency analyzer costs in the $100,000’ so a simple detector system with audio speaker out would be helpful to record.

  • @ted_van_loon
    @ted_van_loon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I just simulated it with the transducers at multiple different distances from each other and noticed that while it does kind of work with almost all distances it does seem to work much better and more directional when all speakers are at exactly half a wavelength from each other. since the transducers are to big for this(wavelength below 1cm) some other distances have to be used.
    did you use a calculation or simulation to determine your distances and if so what are the distances between them in 2 axis. or did you just place them however you felt like, if so adjusting the distance might increase the distance and directivity.

    • @kawrx2002
      @kawrx2002 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think placing them as close as possible together is most effective. The transducers lose 6 dB of pressure at 30 degrees off center; and maximizing the pressure over distance takes advantage of all of the transducers feeding into a combined wave. For a perfect transmission you would need to individually control the timing of each transducer phase to “aim” at a specified distance.

    • @strandedoncat
      @strandedoncat 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ted_van_loon What about using speakers w smaller diameters? The transducers in the video are 16 mm but also come in 12 and 10 mm.

    • @ted_van_loon
      @ted_van_loon 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@strandedoncat I actually used 16mm ones in my build since they are cheaper, this comment however was based on simulating it and was done before building,
      so that means essentially not measuring the diameter but instead using the exact center of the speaker as the point from which the soundwaves come, technically seen based on the transmitter it's optimal behaviour should be like that, which is why I used it in the simulation.
      however luckliy for us the imperfect behaviour of the transmitters automatically increases directivity.
