  • This week I’m delighted to welcome friend and fellow GP, Dr Gemma Newman to the podcast. Gemma is someone who I really respect, not only is she incredibly knowledgeable, she always leads with kindness and compassion - values that I aspire to myself. Gemma has recently released her first book, The Plant Power Doctor: A Simple prescription for a healthier you. Gemma has been a doctor for 17 years and has learned a lot by interacting with her patients but like for so many of us, she has also learned powerful life lessons through her own life experience.
Gemma has a strong family history of heart disease and in her early days as a junior doctor, she found herself to be carrying excess weight and was exhausted. This led to her making some changes to what she ate and how she moved and this helped her lose weight. In fact, she dropped from a size 18 to a size 8 but when she checked her blood levels, she found some concerning results. Initially, Gemma put these results down to her genes and did nothing more about it until she started researching a wholefood plant-based diet. Following this research, Gemma decided to give this way of eating a go and she shares the transformative effect it’s had on her and some of her patients.
This is a wide-ranging conversation. We discuss how many of the chronic illnesses we face - including heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, hormonal dysfunction and obesity - can be helped with changes to our lifestyle. We also talk about Gemma’s own near-death experience and the topic of spirituality. Finally, Gemma shares her brilliant top tips, which you can put into practice immediately to change the way that you feel. At the heart of all Gemma’s advice is compassion and kindness and I’m sure you’ll enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

So important, especially now that every “like” in social media dictates our worth.

Dr. Rangan, thank you. Thank you for valuing all people and your willingness to understand that good health is a God-given right to all people, but some people, because of their circumstances, have more challenges than others. It is not an excuse but a realization. Your messages resonate with all people, but as you know, African-Americans suffer more health issues than any other group of people. Your podcasts are helping people in my community “feel better live more.” Thank you and your guest!!

Love for the greater good is truly the answer. That's what really brings the inner peace for so many suffering daily.. This was so touching And beautiful, mainly because it wasn't aggressive and pushed. That Never fixes things long term, you just end up faking it to makin it for all the wrong reasons ..

One of your best Rangan. Such a compassionate approach, oh that more GPs were the same. Also encouraged by what you recounted of your radio 4 interview. Saw a little clip of a TV interview a week or so back including a well known athlete who showed no understanding whatsoever of the challenges faced by people on low incomes and living in deprived areas in relation to food choice. Good to hear you speak up for them.

I LOVE seeing a "normal" plant based doctor, guided by science, common sense (based upon that science), and not extremist, i.e: raw foodist, low fat, restrictive, etc. these extremes are very dangerous because it makes people fail at being healthy long term, and of course, when they fail, they either suffer ill health for a lifetime, or they end up blaming plant based diets, while their restrictive diet was the culprit... Gemma is really in the know about how to properly eat a diet rich in plants and how to cover your nutritional needs. LISTEN TO HER! Not the extreme people who have absurd restrictive vegan diets.

Loved this, heard Dr Newton speak at Vegfest a year or so ago. She talked about a controlled study that improved mental health using a plant based diet. Please consider having her back to talk about this, given the craziness of the world right now?
Wondering if you might be persuaded to adopt this way of life & suggest it to your patients? 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

I don't know if you are looking for an improvement in mental health for yourself but whether you are or not, i can wholeheartedly recommend a plant-based diet for mental health. Saying that i have been plant-exclusive (eating only salad, veg and starches such as brown rice, potatoes with skin on and sweet potatoes and drinking only water) i am fructose intolerant so my mental health suffers massively if i eat fruit. I had suicidal depression from age 13 until 2017 when i went plant-exclusive. My depression disappeared in the 4 days it took to remove all the other foods from my diet. I also quit smoking 4 days after going plant-exclusive after having tried each year for 10 years previously to that. I had no cravings at all for cigarettes and never have had since. Quitting was a breeze after days 2 and 3 which are when the nicotine leaves your body. That was very hard but no problems at all after that. I also have no cravings for any foods at all and lost 128 pounds in less than a year and kept it off being my body's natural weight now. I dont eat any fat at all but i take omega 3 supplements every day for my brain health. Vegan supplements made from algae oil which is where the fish get their omega 3 from. They eat weeds that contain omega 3. But i have never felt so good in my entire life. I feel invincible and am happy 100% of the time. I've mentioned all of this for all sorts of people with different issues as i do not have my notifications switched on on youtube because of the insulting comments so many sick people make on here. So i wont be able to answer any questions I'm afraid. Follow chef aj for weight loss and the vegan medical doctors she mentions for health aspects. Hope i helped someone. Also you must take vitamin B12 on a plant-exclusive/based diet.

I'm a vegan not so much for the sake of the environment or animals, but rather for my own health. In that regard, what is the difference biologically speaking, between veganism and the Mediterranean diet - in terms of health outcomes?

In one breath she says pesticides are detrimental to gut health and in the next she says plants are beneficial for gut health - which is it, because it can't be both?
She also conveniently fails to mention the anti nutrients in plants such as oxalate, lectins, phytates, polyphenols, etc.
