Honestly listening to this song during the quarantine being a seventeen-year-old stuck from "real" high school experiences makes me contemplate the song in the context of two really pissed off seniors trying to go to prom and trying to enjoy the last year of their childhood.
One of my favorite musical songs. It's so real, and honest about the teenage psyche, giving it a raw feel. Veronica accepts that she's acting like a cliche dramatic, angsty teenager. And she just wants to be normal.
I agree - although it's not TOO cliche, especially considering the fact that she helps her psychotic and emotional boyfriend in murdering people and staging it as suicide.
Did anyone else notice that one of the activities JD mentions is poker. The point of poker is lying/bluffing and manipulating people's thoughts, which JD is doing here in order to keep or build up Veronica's trust again. Or am I just over analyzing it? Edit: Wow hey everyone! Never expected people to respond! I apologize for the stupid "the only activity" part that was... embarrassing. I'm glad that some of you thought this was cool too! I'm the type of person to look and listen to every part of a song/movie, etc. because I like to find hints, clues, Easter eggs, references and lots of fun things that people miss. Sure I'm that annoying person who will talk all day about things in the background but maybe that's good as not everyone has or wants too! :)
*Omigod* you’re right! 😰 That actually makes sense and i dont think ur over analyzing, maybe the creator(s) of the song did a little subtle thing there
I think this song really proves my theories on their relationships. Veronica just wants to help the underdog and to a slight degree she just wants to be loved because she doesn't get that with the Heathers, but this is literally all JD wants. There's never been anyone in his life who cares about him, so when this girl shows up he becomes fixated on her. Whereas Veronica may actually love him, JD is more fixated on her and the idea of someone actually caring about him
+Edwin Vel but I think he tried to kill her because he didn't want her to leave him. He's sacred that she'll leave him so if he kills her then himself then they would always be together.
Sophia Nicholas exactly! plus, he clearly realized after he saw her hanging that's not what he wanted. I think at first he wanted to kill her, then himself, but once he saw her 'dead' he realized that that's not what he wanted at all, that he wanted her to live. :(
I always get chills at the first seventeen at 0:29. I just love the note held there for some reason. The way Veronica sings it, she sounds so sad yet hopeful, almost like a cry for help.
listened to this soundtrack when I was 13, wanting to be 17 so badly. I came back to this song four years later, and I’m 17 now. I wish I could keep my youth just a little longer cause Veronica was right, it’s all I wanna do.
This is officially the first song I've heard as a seventeen year old. I opened up a browser and blasted this at midnight, and decided to come back and share this fact. I am pleased.
The saddest line in this song is "if we still have the right." Because Veronica believed that she didn't deserve to be a proper teen because of all they had done. Same with JD
does anyone else tear up the first time she says "cant we be seventeen?" for some reason it is so emotional to me maybe because high school was difficult for me and you can feel that all she wants is to love someone and be loved but it's not turning out the way she'd like it too...basically high school is summed up in a line... no matter how hard we try those years are lost between wanting to grow up and just stay a kid with no worries.
Elizabeth Minott this makes me emotional because it seems like all of my friends get positive treatment from guys, but I'm stuck in a loop of bad guy luck, like I want to be like a normal teenager with a boyfriend but I feel like I'm not worthy for anyone to treat me like I'm seventeen
I love how this song starts with saying that being damaged doesn't make you a better person. Mental health issues are romanticized so much nowadays, and you see quotes everywhere about how "the hurt one's are the kindest" or "I only ever care for others, never for myself" or "if you have depression, that makes you one of the strongest and kindest people" or "selfharming people are angels who want to return to heaven", and while some of these might come close to reality, it's actually not often the case. Damaged people often end up being toxic, and very exhausting, sometimes very self centered, or think that just because they have, for example, depression, means all their behavior is excused. That's a thing I love about this musical. J.D. was damaged, and he was psychotic, and if you think that what he did was a good thing, and you "wish you could do that too", that's mostly you being either edgy (most likely) or stupid or really fucked up. Same goes with the others in this musical: Heather Chandler was a mean, horrible person, and Me Inside Of Me is a wonderful example of how you can literally make anyone seem good (that's also what the Musical does with JD, ironically), if you just manipulate enough. She, Ram and Kurt, as well as JD and Veronica, and the other two Heathers did some really horrible stuff, but Veronica and JD managed easily to make it out to be very tragic and overly three-dimensional, to a fake extent.
Sorry, but you’re almost entirely wrong lol. First off, you’re wrong about the first part. And second of all, mental health is not romanticised for the most part at all. The only romanticised mental illnesses are depression and anxiety, and that’s because they’re the most palatable. Plenty of other mentally ill people are demonised beyond belief; our society is still rife with ableism.
This musical adds so much dimension to their relationship. In the movie it was kind of like they were bound to each other because they slept with each other, but here you can tell they never want to leave each other and would do anything for the other one.

Same. You got this tho! If you practice i’ll bet you can hit it. Im able to hit it now after practicing a bit. I have to find a private area or be home alone to be able to practice it without embarrassing myself 😂
Practice higher notes. I'm an alto and I used to be only able to sing up to C5 without straining (ik that's low for a lot of other females) but now I can get up to A5 before strain
i love how when j.d says "or they vanish" it has two different meanings. the way veronica saw it she thinks they he means how they disappear from their lives, like j.d's mom. but i think that j.d meant they die because right before his says that veronica sings "people hurt us" and when heather, kurt and ram hurt veronica, j.d kills the three because he loves her. just a theory.
Listen closely to when Veronica says, "I'll stay if I'm what you choose." There is a certain dark-like drop on the beat. It happens to J.D. after they have killed Kurt and Ram when he says "Our love is god." Both beats happen to represent the control they have at that moment. J.D. over Veronica in "Our Love is God" as they have just killed again. In this song as it claims that Veronica has new control over J.D. stating that if he kills again with her, she will end the whole thing. Clever musical.
laura sinclair Noice icon Sorry I just wanted to point out that I have a really unhealthy obsession with musicals because of Hamilton Okay now I'm just having a conversation with myself This is why I don't have friends Okay nice talking to you BOOOOOIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!
i think it's strange how at the end, veronica says "if i am what you choose" and jd doesn't answer, simply repeats "can't we be seventeen". she asks again, he repeats "if we've still got the right." he only says he chooses veronica after she says she chooses him. he hesitated.
I like to think that at the end of the song where JD is saying, "can't we be seventeen" and "if we still got the right" that it's him replaying what Veronica has said to him. He's thinking about his decision, but when he says "you're the one I choose" it sounds rushed. It's like he doesn't know what he's agreeing with. He's saying yes because he just wants to be with Veronica. He's not really thinking about what she's asking of him. That she wants him to be normal, she wants them to be normal.
Professor Wright I love your interpretation of it, I totally hear it, she is repeating it as if she's trying to get a response then she changes to tell him that he's who she chooses even if he doesn't choose her and it's so emotional and beautiful I love it
"Maybe prom night-" "Let's make sure they never see their senior prom-" Okay JD. Alright. Fun fact: Veronica and JD never went to prom together. EDIT: How are people still thinking this comment is good tf- Also thanks ig this song hit me in the feels again lmao-
kinda upsets me that he kept his promise to kill the whole student body better than his prom promise is setting up bombs AND getting away with it actually easier..?
Every time I listen to that song it's that last bit that makes me think so deeply. Veronica repeatedly singing "If I am what you choose" before JD finally replies at the end just makes me realise that JD was still hesitant about choosing Veronica and that hesitance built up until he decided to kill again.
you just gotta have a good control over your breathing, i can hold most, if not all of them with ease (im not trying to 'flex' btw, just saying that if you practice you could do it too)
I turn 18 in 3 days. I lost my whole senior year (musical, prom, graduation) and continue to come back to this song. I am terrified, and would pay any amount of money to stay 17 for one more year. Please, wish me luck. Life hasn't been easy on me lately and I'm sure it doesn't get much better from here.
@@maxeyre2024 Been through some heartbreak and tough times still, but things have actually been getting better recently. Playing Veronica is so much fun! I played her in a production of Heathers near me. 462 people auditioned for her but they picked me... I felt so privileged. I think this was my favourite song
2:43 is absolutely heartbreaking for me I have no idea why, like it just has a really vulnerable tone to it, almost childlike. Seriously need to see this musical, shame I live in the UK hahah
+Meghan-Rose McKee Yes! The little change in the music there is what really nails it....like clinging to some hopeless longing, a last bit of optimism that is completely in vain...it's so fucking sad. :'(
Normal relationship drama in movies/musicals: are you cheating on me!?? How could you do this to me! Heathers: why can't we just be normal teens and not murder people!?!
I like to think that at the end of the song where JD is saying, "can't we be seventeen" and "if we still got the right" that it's him replaying what Veronica has said to him. He's thinking about his decision and when he says, "you're the one I choose" it sounds rushed because he's just trying to keep the only good thing in his life with him. He can't comprehend what he's hearing, but if agreeing will keep Veronica with him, he'll do it. I don't that's just what I think, haha...
I feel like JD's singing along and not just listening to Veronica because he wants that. He really wants that life with her, and he's trying to convince the voices in his head to just be normal, and to chose her. Idk I'm procrastinating chores.
This song always gets me. The line "can't we be seventeen" really hits home because that's when my life really started to fall apart. I wasn't really able to have a normal highschool life, couldn't even think of college until years to come. The relationship between Veronica and JD is very similar to one I was having at the time. This whole song just continually makes me cry every time I hear it.
Hula Giraffe what new movie? It's old, and it gives reason why he did it. He's a sociopath who thinks that killing bad people will make life better, and he's trying to compensate for the pain he feels about his mom's suicide
i honestly interpret this song as veronica as trying to love JD and attempt to convince him to stop being psychotic. While it may seem that JD is agreeing with her in this song, its quite clear that JD is copying what she says. JD isnt in love with Veronica, as we know, just the idea that someone loves him so he pursues her for that. JD copying the lines Veronica says shows that he's not actually agreeing with what she says or even listening, just repeating it as she says it so it sounds like he's all for "being normal"
Fera That’s really smart, but I think he’s copying just for the sake of being normal and not because he doesn’t love her. In the musical, I feel that he definitely loves Veronica. There were definitely sacrifices made for her. In the movie, on the other hand, he doesn’t. He stated it himself in the film. That’s definitely a difference between the play and movie. In the play, he loves her but has an abusive view on what love is. He does it the only way he knows how.
In the movie JD didn't love Veronica, but in the musical he did. In this song, I think he wasn't just copying what she was saying, he was...trying to be normal, I guess. But he was "too damaged" to love her in a normal way.
Fera JD was in love with Veronica, he just didn’t know how to maintain a proper relationship. He loved her but didn’t have the mental capacity to understand that what he was doing was wrong and hurting her, so he just continued to kill because he had no other way of living.
Now this is a Toxic Relationship! Regardless of how bad this guy is Veronica not obligated to FIX him. This is an amazing representation of this because just like the characters you want this relationship to work out but, deep down we know it Cannot.
As soon as Riverdale said they would do a Heathers episode, I knew all the comments would be “cAmE fRoM RiVeRdALe” and it really makes me upset that this is what has happened to such a great musical
I guess you’re right, but look at it this way: if it wasn’t for all the ppl coming from Riverdale, not as many ppl would know and enjoy heathers and it wouldn’t have gotten all the appreciation that it deserves.

as someone who has a lower voice, just sing JD's part its lower than Veronica's
Practice higher notes. I'm an alto and I used to be only able to sing up to C5 without straining (ik that's low for a lot of other females) but now I can get up to A5 before strain
It’s easy kinda
i love how when j.d says "or they vanish" it has two different meanings. the way veronica saw it she thinks they he means how they disappear from their lives, like j.d's mom. but i think that j.d meant they die because right before his says that veronica sings "people hurt us" and when heather, kurt and ram hurt veronica, j.d kills the three because he loves her. just a theory.

And then he tries to blow up the whole school.

i think it's strange how at the end, veronica says "if i am what you choose" and jd doesn't answer, simply repeats "can't we be seventeen". she asks again, he repeats "if we've still got the right." he only says he chooses veronica after she says she chooses him. he hesitated.
I like to think that Veronica's repetition "If I am what you choose" is due to her wanting a response and JD is avoiding it
Professor Wright I love your interpretation of it, I totally hear it, she is repeating it as if she's trying to get a response then she changes to tell him that he's who she chooses even if he doesn't choose her and it's so emotional and beautiful I love it

Every time I listen to that song it's that last bit that makes me think so deeply. Veronica repeatedly singing "If I am what you choose" before JD finally replies at the end just makes me realise that JD was still hesitant about choosing Veronica and that hesitance built up until he decided to kill again.
jesus they can hold a note, like I can't even get halfway through some of those, and they do it flawlessly

"September 1 1989" (Beautiful)
"Go buy some summer clothes" (Seventeen)
I think it was almost summer when they killed Ram and Kurt but IDK.......
Rea Gelacio no because they are still in school for the rest of the musical it is not summer yet
This is Veronica trying to convince JD not to kill anyone else till summer because if he's in jail then he can't wear his new summer clothes
they're on sale!!!
time passes
I like to think that at the end of the song where JD is saying, "can't we be seventeen" and "if we still got the right" that it's him replaying what Veronica has said to him. He's thinking about his decision and when he says, "you're the one I choose" it sounds rushed because he's just trying to keep the only good thing in his life with him. He can't comprehend what he's hearing, but if agreeing will keep Veronica with him, he'll do it. I don't that's just what I think, haha...
That's exactly was I was thinking!
I feel like JD's singing along and not just listening to Veronica because he wants that. He really wants that life with her, and he's trying to convince the voices in his head to just be normal, and to chose her.
Idk I'm procrastinating chores.
Normal person: "aww what a sweet end"

Yup Heathers fans aren't normal lol
Yup when you know you know
but wouldnt a normal person have also seen heathers if they searched up the lyrics to one of the songs?

This song always gets me. The line "can't we be seventeen" really hits home because that's when my life really started to fall apart. I wasn't really able to have a normal highschool life, couldn't even think of college until years to come. The relationship between Veronica and JD is very similar to one I was having at the time. This whole song just continually makes me cry every time I hear it.

Leo Senpai yeah, the new movie just makes him crazy and has no real reason that Veronica would stay with him and no reason why he's not in jail
Leo Senpai
Really damaged

@Aitchtick but he's not in love with her???
I think he does love her but in a pretty toxic way. His idea of love is killing everyone who even dares hurt her in any way.
Fera JD was in love with Veronica, he just didn’t know how to maintain a proper relationship. He loved her but didn’t have the mental capacity to understand that what he was doing was wrong and hurting her, so he just continued to kill because he had no other way of living.
