Shoutout to Roger Ebert for recognizing it immediately: “This is the movie that proves Tarantino is the real thing, and not just a two-film wonder boy.”
I believe they are forced to customize their opinion to the climate. This was only 3-4 years after anyone actually kmew who on earth Quentin Tarantino is.
Everything about this intro, the airport frozen in time, the antiquated but appropriate text, the statuesque, gorgeous, strong woman running towards life and headlong into the film, and Womack howling like a dog, but oh so beautifully so, singing his heart out. Layer upon layer of metaphor. I fall in love every single time I see this. Perfect.
I swear, Pam Grier is one of the most beautiful, classy and charming ladies ever in movies even though she made a lot of B movies. She was almost 50 in this and still very sensual!
This film was such an incredible gateway into classic soul and R&B for me when I first saw it as a teenager. Bobby Womack, Delfonics, The Brothers Johnson, Roy Ayers, Bill Wither, Randy Crawford, and so many more. Across 110th Street, Strawberry Letter 23, and Street Life in particular will never fail to give me chills. Quentin has an exquisite music taste, and the songs were all incorporated masterfully in the film.
Most criminally underrated Tarantino film . Smart characters trying to stay ahead of each other, great chemistry between Grier and Forster, and even De Niro hardly speaking a word and still acting the perfect stoner nails that role. Pam looks like a million bucks and her role as Jackie is so well done. Only thing I hate about the film is Ordell’s gross hair 😂
Following Pulp Fiction was the only thing wrong with this movie. Probably his best film if you ask me. It's not an historical re-write trying to touch people's emotions over past wrong's by inserting a victim group identity and making them feel empowered for 2 1/2 hours (not that I have a problem with that but it's a bit hack). Just a great story extremely well acted about a group of people we can all relate to in one way or the other. They don't make 'em like this anymore (that includes Tarantino)
This is my favorite movie of all time. Banging soundtrack, blaxploitation homages but never derivative, amazing source material and one of the best ensemble casts of the late 90s. Plus, Pam Grier is a goddess.
@@cosmicninja8901 It was. From wiki about the movie: The film is set in Harlem and takes its name from 110th Street, the traditional dividing line between Harlem and Central Park that functioned as an informal boundary of race and class in 1970s New York City.
Upset that Pam Grier didn't receive an Academy Award nomination for this role! Not fair, she deserved to be nominated atleast! talented actress and very underrated outside of the blaxploitation films
Pam Grier gave a very subtle performance which is why the movie was so good. Samuel L Jackson was suppose to be the stone cold dude but she was the soft spoken strategic graceful but tough woman.
I gonna commit blasphemy but this is by far Tarantino's best movie. Every performance is gold. Every scene is essential. Every line of dialogue seems real.
A genuinely strong female character, no bullshit, no plot armour, no nonsense. A fantastic character portrayed by a woman at her peak. Jackie Brown is by far Tarantino's best.
i saw all of tarantinos films excluding deathproof and that was down the Weinstein debacle of putting the movie studios over a barrel re how that film was distributed and it in turn lead to their demise as a film company. but The opening of inglorious basterds is the best film moment of career.

lol yeah. sometimes I pretend I'm Pam Grier - so cool, calm ,together, gorgeous when I have to walk a long ways in front of other people - airport, street, mall .
Epic opening sequence. Tarantino movie IQ genius level. The music selection, the pacing, the color palette, the font, the uniform, the scarf, the beauty of Pam Grier, the rush build up at the end of the sequence, the vintage United plane in the background, all works together perfectly.
This opening sequence alone displays more talent, wit, flair and ability than the cumulative output of Hollywood in the last 20 years! Simply brilliant - and it's only the opening sequence!
This makes me cry every time I watch it. I have no choice in the matter. I'm overwhelmed by the beauty of it. I cry everytime. The Bobby Womack song is absolutely great in itself, but with the visuals and the editing - great visual elevated by a great song and vice versa. Watch it again - watch the visuals synced up to the beats of the song. I have some issues with Tarantino, but this is astonishingly, overwhelmingly, astoundingly, stunningly gorgeous. It's so precise!
Jackie Brown is a fantastic movie. People look to the meta-text of Birdman for Michael Keaton's career being resurrected. Please. Jackie Brown is the epitome with Pam Grier and Robert Forster.
You're right. I think this film is above all about a woman's courage and I see it as a sad but great love story, too. Whatever other people say, I suppose it's a great drama. I just love this movie!
I’ll always remember having breakfast in a hotel in Shepherd’s Bush, London with Bobby Womack. He was an absolute gentleman. We chatted for over half an hour. The funniest thing is he thought I was famous lol as I had a terrible hangover and was wearing big sunglasses and a hat in the restaurant. He was genuinely interested in the fact my husband and I were staying at the hotel as we were in London at a fundraising gala for #ReverseRett as our daughter has Rett syndrome. My kind of lady. Pam Grier…Bad to the bone.
Yes I agree 👍💯
Love how Quentin gave us the whole song here, you don't cut a song like this. Perfect blend of imagery and music.
Well anyone who’s walked through an airport knows it would probably take the length of this song played five times over.
Hell yeah
The second chorus is cut a little.
Can't cut up great music !

Pretty damn sad. The night earlier to his death i was watching El Camino. Great loss to Hollywood
When did he die? I keep forgetting that this film was made in the mid 90's, it always seems more recent for some reason.

Indeed a great loss to his many fans, in his twenties Robert was like a rugged version of Alain Delon.

I like how Robert Deniro put his stardom aside for a supporting role. Even his name shows up last as "and Robert Deniro"
I liked him for that even earlier, in Terry Gilliam's Brazil. Didn't even show his face, wearing a balaclava.
