    I have one I'm trying to rebuild. The bed has a lot of wear within the first fit and a friend is going to build it up with his welder so we can grind and scrape it back down to true in that area.
    Glad to see this, even if it is years too late. Hope you're still getting good use out of it.

    Great score! I love the belt drive system on those. I have an 11" S series Sheldon from the mid 40's. It was made for the Army for use on the back of a truck. It has the motor below the bed. I have a few lathe videos uploaded but none of my Sheldon. Will need to correct that next month when I have time to strip my Sheldon down for repairs. Anyhow, looking forward to future videos on your Sheldon.

    I have a similar Sheldon lathe. Flat belt and all. I would highly recommend that you move the start switch to the front or end of the machine. I never like reaching over a spinning machine to turn it on or off!

    That thing is a carriage stop. There's a Sheldon group on Yahoo. You want to get a quick change tool holder. I have a 1945 Sheldon, it's used for production work every day.

      Matthew Randall it looks complete from here. I’ve got a ‘how to identify your Sheldon’ file here somewhere, I’ll send it tonight. First thing to do is move that switch - if something jams, you don’t want to be reaching over the chuck to shut it off...

    Travel gauge , shift gears only when off by rotating chuck to engage the feed on carriage. Should be oiled daily when used no grease , way oil is preferred. Great machine Sheldon , he will learn as you all terms of the lathe. I suggest the South end book on lathes n how to use them. Make a cover for the open top of the quick change gear box. The lever you engaged is for threading , the knob in middle engages feeds for cross and carriage feed. Other lever changes the feeds from to the other. Also on the end of the lathe the feed screw can he change for left or right feeds. Oh dont leave leather belt under pressure when not in use it stretches the leather .

    Strange world, I had called about this same lathe Nov 2018, and was going to go look at it, but found a South Bend 9c and bought it. We live just south of down town Boyd. Today, Feb 4th 2021, I go SW to Weatherford Tx to look at a Sheldon 10in. It is a cabinet model with catch pan...If we take it, will show on our channel. Boyd is small town, but has some good people,, Sure by know that Clay has made a lot of chips in 3+ years, Bear from Boyd, Check out our SB 9 on Bears Rod Shop, it may be up for sale soon.

      That lathe has done a lot of work since Clay got it. He has learned a lot with it.

    Approximately how much did this model weigh?

    • @matthewrandall6320
      @matthewrandall6320  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Initially we thought about 800lbs. I would put it at 400lbs max. Once we put on the floor of the shop I was able to move the light end by hand and two of us moved it to its current spot.

      The Coldest I have been in up here is -42 F, although we don't too often get below -30 being so close to a large body of water that tends to regulate our temperature locally. -20 is just a normal winter day in our neighborhood.

      @@djrand62 we are not prepared for that kind of cold in this part of the world. We get 1" or 2" of snow at 25 degrees and everything shuts down and all the food in the stores disappear.

      @@matthewrandall6320 Hi Matt, Just thought I would let you know. I took a drive this morning, -18 degrees, but it's supposed to warm up to -13 today. Tonight it is supposed to get o -20 with a wind chill of -30. We have had a relatively warm winter, with only a few short bursts of cold weather.

      @@djrand62 That's cold Dave, we are currently 41 degrees. Supposed to be in the middle 20s tomorrow. Wind is about 35mph out of the north and the wind chill will be in the single digits tomorrow. That is way too cold for us, you can have the cold weather back cause I know it came from way up where you are at. BRRR! Stay warm. Go watch Stephen Cox's new video. The boys and I are in it.
