Man, hearing that opening “Put Put travels through tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime!” Really sent me back, that was my very first video game, that or Oregon Trail.
Thank you for these nostalgia trips. I just want to say that I specifically remember Travel Through Time's varying item locations added a lot as a kid - kids replay games a lot more than adults regardless of how dull they might seem to adults, so going the extra mile for people who replayed was something that really stuck out as memorable.
I brought this up in my updated Pajama Sam video, but there is a reason why Putt-Putt's color couldn't be changed in Pep's Birthday Surprise. See, at this point, the team had switched from using the S.C.U.M.M. engine to working with a new game engine called the Python (which was later dubbed the YAGA). However, because it was so new, they were literally figuring out how to use the engine while they were making the games. Because of this, they were left with little time to implement certain elements, and changing Putt-Putt's color was one of them.
It doesn't help that the game had a ton of FMV cutscenes (as opposed to in-game animation,) meaning they'd have to incorporate separate video files for every color in the game, which was far too much data for one CD-ROM.
Putt put was my very first PC game, Putt Putt enters the race was my very first Putt Putt game in kindergarten. My second was Putt-Putt joins the circus, and last was Putt Putt save the zoo
Honestly, my favorite Putt Putt title is ‘goes to the moon’ ! I understand it’s probably one of the easier ones, and you commented on not being a huge fan of the pixel style, but I think that’s why I like it. The art was so good! That’s obviously my opinion. Love these retrospectives! Very nostalgic.
Thank you for unlocking memories I didn't even know I still had... Played a few of these as a kid, and I recall Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo being my favourite. The theme song unearthed something in me, lol
One thing I remember about Travels Through Time (unless I overlooked this detail) is that whenever someone has a problem with something, and Putt-Putt would offer to help, he'd say something else if he/the player already have the necessary item. Such as picking up the coin at the beginning before visiting Firebird. Or when the Blacksmith's dragon is holding onto the lunchbox, Putt-Putt's dialogue would change if there's already a bag of Dragon Food in the glovebox/"inventory".
These sadly weren’t a part of my childhood, but fortunately, I recommended them for my cousin’s kids to my aunt, who lets them use her iPad. I like to think I did them a service.
puttputt saves the zoo was the hardest game me and my sister played, we could not BEAT IT. Playing it again makes me laugh seeing how guided the game is.
This is such a great retrospective on the series. Not only do you go into great detail on each entry but you even cover obscure things like one stop fun shop and the demos. Having played these games a million times, I still learned a few things watching and found a new appreciation for the little purple car. Great work!
I am savouring this video series. I have been a lifelong fan of HE games and I now own all of them on Steam and play often to get that nostalgia hit. These videos are so well researched and I'm learning so much about the games that I didn't know before. Thank you so much for putting them together! I am now even more of a fan of HE, and I also hope that one day the old team could come back together to create one last amazing game. Imagine a mash up of all the characters in one!
One thing that annoys me though - the Steam versions of the game don't seem to have multiple locations for items to spawn in, such as Putt Putt's things in Travel's Through Time. They always spawn in the same place for me. They need to fix that!! Same goes for PJ Sam's things in NNTH!!
The animation of these games is still gorgeous to me, so impressive and high-effort for an early children’s PC game. I played Travels Through Time all the time as a kid but had no idea that the items spawned in different locations each time until now! (I clearly didn’t pay very close attention back then)
I didn't think I'd find a honking Putt Putt retrospective coming out today, right as I randomly remembered that Putt Putt was a thing...but...here I am. Saved for later, I'll watch it tonight.
Putt-Putt is my homie bro, Travels Through Time is essentially one of the first games I ever played and I still have the soundtracks of the different worlds stuck in my head from the wild west to the medieval world. Also Putt-Putt's antenna thing that sounds like a fishing rod, still remember the sound
I may had not know what Humorous Entertainment was before, but I can tell you have putting a lot of passion in this video. Someday I will look into their gaming library.
The idea of games that teach you how to play through level design is mainly associated with Megaman X, but it’s funny to think that Putt-Putt technically did that just one year earlier in 1992.
I agree with the idea that Megaman X does this very well, but I have literally only seen Egoraptor associate it with that. I've seen more people associate Mario with that idea due to Miyamoto's quotes on "teaching the player" being his intent on 1-1's level design.
I grew up with travels through time alone. I heard all your praise of goes to the zoo in the main video and was worried you might dislike it, but then you said it was the one you were lost excited for and that made me more excited to hear your thoughts on this childhood favorite. Heck I’m not sure but it MIGHT be the first video game I ever played. Although I can’t say for certain
Putt Putt Enters the Race was the only non-Backyard Sports HE game I experienced. I was a bit out of the age range for it, but it was handed out as a free gift for visiting the Indianapolis Speedway when we went as part of a school trip. Even as a middle schooler, I was still able to get a decent bit of fun out of the game. This retrospective jogged some memories, and now I'm going to have to buy these games for my daughters to play.
I enjoyed this! I pretty much see eye to eye with you on all your opinions, right down to Travels Through Time and Enters the Race being my favorite two entries, but I still enjoyed watching this through overall! I should mention, one thing you didn't bring up -- in Travels Through Time, not only can you change Putt-Putt's color, you can also change the shade of it either to lighter or darker from the default using that little red slider at the bottom of the paint machine. This is the only game in the whole series to do this. Other than that, I really liked this video! I think you did the series a lot of justice and I can't wait to see the others!
So THAT'S what that slider does. Oh my gosh, been playing Travels Through Time almost all my life and I never even noticed that it changes the color shade. All these years later and I'm still learning new things about these games, that's awesome!
@@ShadowStreak Believe me, when Humongous was my hyperfixation in the early 2010s, I and several others like 831 here found all sorts of little things you wouldn't think would take this long to discover. Like, half the paths in Time are effectively 'unlockable', in that you can only encounter them after you've beaten the game enough times. I think Pajama Sam 1 works this same way. While Race just cycles through 6 combinations based on how much the game is reset. Just interesting to consider they even had a system like that.
The weirdness of the title "Pep's Birthday Surprise" bothered me even as a kid, giving me the impression that it was a spin-off game or birthday activity pack when I saw it in a catalog. That alone made me skip it and I'm thinking I probably dodged a bullet there.
Ah Putt Putt! This was one of my favorite Humongous Entertainment series. I owned and played most of the games you talked about here except for: Putt Putt's Fun Pack since I already got Putt Putt and Fatty Bear's Activity Pack that came with those games. Putt Putt's One-Stop Fun Shop and Putt Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise I remember having lots of fun times with the games I owned. Freddi Fish is up next. Keep up the good work Shadow.
My favorite childhood secret about the Putt-Putt games is that if you held down the control key while the characters spoke it would increase the playback speed by x2 (or whatever was fast enough to get these cars sounding like chipmunks) If you still have the CD-ROM for the game and windows 2000, give it a try!
Like I said before, Putt-Putt was my favorite series from Humongous Entertainment, next to Pajama Sam. Excluding "Dog on a Stick," I remember playing the pre-"Circus" games quite often as a kid. My top three favorite "Putt-Putt" games were "Goes to the Moon," "Saves the Zoo," and "Travels through Time." They all had the most intriguing environments to me and some of the challenges they had made them entertaining. "Travels through Time" is arguably the best for its variations on finding Pep and the items, and I love how they depicted the vehicles of each time period. Btw the dinosaur area is basically an amalgamation of all three periods of the Mesozoic Era (Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous), though it's far from the first to do this. Anyways, another thing I loved about these games was the color-changing aspect, along with the different setups for them in each game (i.e. the garage in "Parade" and "Race," the diner in "Moon"). Although, while I sometimes changed Putt-Putt's colors, I still often kept him in his original purple coat since that was, and still is, my favorite color. Can't wait to hear you discuss Freddi Fish!
Small editing thing, but I LOVE how you displayed the DOS games in 4:3 rather than settling for "square pixels." No hard feelings for the Windows/Mac ports, but even as a kid, I could tell everything looked a little squashed. Technical limitations, I know, but not even the Tommo releases would fix it.

Personal Ranking: 1. Travels Through Time - Perfect. Best scope of adventure, best characters 2. Saves the Zoo 3. Goes to the Moon 4. Enters the Race - Honestly considering the last adventure took place across time, seeing things move down to just Cartown again was kinda, 'not as cool' 5. Joins the Circus - The fact that EVERYTHING was always the same, I think except for the wood shape you needed to cut made it less replayable. 6. Joins the Parade - I can respect it as the first game, I just think it's too short and basic compared to the later games. 7. Pep's Birthday Surprise...... I think we all agree this one's crap.
I only remember Putt Putt Enters the Race because I had it when I was little with my old Dell system with Windows XP. I never knew about the voice change or... any of the other games for that matter, until I was older. Still love that game, and I'm glad it held up so well. Long live Humongous Entertainment!
As a kid, I remember playing two of the Putt-Putt CD-ROM games I have back in the 2000s and it is still kept in my home for years. It's called Putt-Putt and Pep's Balloon-o-Rama & Putt-Putt Saves The Zoo. Balloon-o-Rama is okay for me in my opinion but I was so bored playing the game. My cousin gave me the game. Putt-Putt Saves The Zoo is my most favourite Humongous Entertainment game and I really loved it. In Putt-Putt Saves The Zoo, the rapids ride is one of my favourite things I've ever enjoyed the most in the game. I kept going there again and again! It was so much fun and so fascinating! Sadly, I cannot play both Putt-Putt games anymore because the times have changed. My parents have to buy a new PC for me. I wish Humongous Entertainment should come back to make more games or even create a TV series or movie with the same characters. That will be great.
Putt-Putt Travels Through Time lied to me. The back of the CD case had a screenshot of the end of the game where Putt-Putt got all his stuff back, but ONLY his stuff. No extra items. I played the game a hundred times when I was little trying to get that ending, but I never could. I hate the game. 10/10
As a kid, I had all of the hand drawn putt putt games, including Birthday Surprise. I'll be honest, as a kid I didn't see much of a difference. I found it weird that the box art was so different, but that was it. It wasn't my favorite, but I never thought it was bad.
Until the end of the HE retrospective video, I wouldn't have known there was more to this series. I'm going to enjoy every second of these next 7 videos.
Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon also has an entire arcade game--with 50 unique levels--called Bear Stormin'. It features Fatty Bear. You have to click on the arcade machine to access it.
I remember playing only the first three, along with the activity pack and Balloon-o-Rama. I still have yet to win Saves the Zoo though! Anyway, thanks for this nostalgia trip - sometimes I wish I could be 5 years old all over again.
Also, you forgot to mention that, along with the references of the H.E. characters through the telescope, if you go to the Future Museum and talk to the curator, Putt-Putt will ask him questions about items relating to the H.E. characters.
Wow love this video I appreciate the in depth look into something that was so big for me in my childhood!! I honestly sing the little jingle of put put travels through time almost every week
Will you cover the history of the humongous blues clues games? I never grew up with their original characters, but their blues clue games defined my childhood, and I'd love to revisit them
I may not have played any Humongous games, but the game I want the most to come back is Spy Fox. I'd love to see a Sly Coopery gameplay and setting with a new generation game.
Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon was my first Humongous game to be introduced to and it was very entertaining for me. Also, I have always had a good ear for music. For example, while being in the lobby section of the Airport game, I pointed out the music from Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon playing to my parents, and they have been happy about my ear for music ever since.
I just realized that Spy Fox is the only H.E. game series that doesn't have a One Stop Fun Shop activities game, or even a board game themed game like Pajama Sam, Freddi Fish and Putt-Putt! Now I really wish we DID have a Spy Fox arts and crafts CD game, for coloring pages and such!
Believe it or not, Putt-Putt 4 actually has 18 different paint jobs, but the game doesn't do a very good job of explaining this. You can choose to lighten or darken the colors in Ms. Electra's shop. It's a super unique feature that unfortunately never returned.
Talking about the Travels Through Time demo, The intro sequence where Putt-Putt introduces the game, I believe that's Putt-Putt's original voice actor. The recording of the intro must have taken place some time after production on the main game had been completed. And it was really starting to show that the actor's voice was getting deeper at that point. Much more noticeable there than during the actual gameplay. At least that's what I believe anyway.
This was my childhood i remember playing theses games back in elementary school growing up putt putt saves the zoo putt putt travels through time putt putt enters the race the circus one including pajama sam and freddie fish thoses games were great
I've got to be honest, Pep's Birthday Surprise was a game I really wanted to like, particularly because of the story (It's nice to have the entire game essentially revolve around helping out pep, considering his rather lackluster feeling role in the others). While I'd still say, at least as just a viewer of someone else talking about the games, I'd take this over Joins The Circus due to just feeling more unique and having a reason to feel as under developed as it does while having some pretty cool ideas (even if they don't work as well in the final product), you can just feel the pressure the team had to go through, plus I REALLY dislike the voice of Putt-Putt, even if I like the idea of its inclusion.
I grew up with putt putt goes to the moon it was my childhood game and the disk got glitched so it would always stop and never let me beat it once I got the Mars hotel part and it wasn’t until I was a teen and found the game on the App Store that I ever beat it :)
I started off with Joins The Circus and loved playing it so much. I remember waiting for another "joins the" release as a kid from that point on, heard about there being other ones somehow but time goes quick..
Putt-Putt Travels Through Time is an absolute masterpiece. While "Topiary Creatures" is great and iconic as hell, Time Continuum is just beautiful. I also quote Merlin's "Ahhh yes." often. Weird how some things just latch onto out developing vocabulary. My first experience with Travels Through Time was the demo on Pajama Sam 2 (the only one I had at the time). It wasn't until I met another kid who had all the HE games that I was able to experience it in full. Love it. Putt-Putt was never my favorite of the HE franchises though so I don't really have as much of an attachment to the others in the series. Amazing job on this retrospective!
I love it when other people share their stories with these games! Funny how I'm not the only one who found Merlin's line memorable haha! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Of all the Humongous IPs, I had the most Putt-Putt games out of the bunch. I didn’t have all of them, but a good chunk. Saves the Zoo was also my first in the series and I still have so much love for it. It may be a one and done, but I find all the unique animations and dialogue opportunities to be incredibly charming. Dog on a Stick was the only Junior Arcade game I ever owned as a kid and it’s very near and dear to my heart. Travels Through Time is my personal favorite Humongous game and to me is the poster child for everything amazing about the company’s library. I even had a copy of One Stop-Fun Shop and I do remember printing out some of the crafts. The music there is also some of my favorite in the series. I also had Joins the Circus, which was the last Humongous game I owned, and while it may be a step down from the previous two titles, I do consider it on par with Saves the Zoo. However, if I had to choose between the two, I’d pick the latter any day. While I have experienced all the Humongous games as an adult, Putt-Putt is still my favorite and will always be an important part of my childhood.
1:16:42 There's a reason why you think the graphics are blurry: witness the powerful YAGA engine. It was an engine Humongous started to use in 2002 as a replacement to the SCUMM engine which was used from the early 90's all the way through possibly 2001.
My goodness, last time I see this guy is when I went to my local library. Never got the chance to finish the games though, these are pretty much classics in my book and games to in the world of reading.
One of the cleverest jokes in the Putt-Putt series, that I DEFINITELY missed until I was an adult, was the leader of Moon City being named "Governor Moonbeam" - a reference to California Gov. Jerry Brown.
I actually grew up near the Humongous Entertainment headquarters in Washington state😂 I’m not 100 percent sure but I think my grandmother bought the games from catalogs directly from them. I had every single game they ever released. The only ones I recall getting from a physical store was putt putt joins the parade at Toys R Us and Fatty Bears Birthday Surprise from Costco.
I could’ve sworn that peps birthday surprise was my favourite…. But I thought it was a really early game in the series… come to find out it’s really late in the series
Maybe the parade isn't the same date each year, and is the first Saturday of a certain month, since putting it on the same date would cause it to happen on a weekday usually.
Man, hearing that opening “Put Put travels through tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime!” Really sent me back, that was my very first video game, that or Oregon Trail.
The problem I have with Pep's Birthday Surprise is that you have to constantly tell Pep to go away.
It's the most exhausting thing in my opinion.
Thank you for these nostalgia trips.

2. Saves the Zoo
3. Goes to the Moon
4. Enters the Race - Honestly considering the last adventure took place across time, seeing things move down to just Cartown again was kinda, 'not as cool'
I think Pep’s Surprise Birthday is underrated in my opinion.
I heard that Putt Putt was supposed to get his own animated tv show and a movie sometime in 1997.
Why does Ron Gilbert look like he's about to flip a table or pull out a Flintstones-esque club from offscreen and choose violence?
Also, you forgot to mention that, along with the references of the H.E. characters through the telescope, if you go to the Future Museum and talk to the curator, Putt-Putt will ask him questions about items relating to the H.E. characters.
Love it! I think I had a disc with Joins the Parade, Goes to the Moon and Fatty Bear's Birthday surprise.
Wow love this video I appreciate the in depth look into something that was so big for me in my childhood!! I honestly sing the little jingle of put put travels through time almost every week
Wonder what Pajama and Spy Fox look like If they were vehicles In The Putt-Putt Universe?
I... Don't Want to Know.
I'd some what remembered those Putt-Putt games ever since I was a kid
I just realized that Spy Fox is the only H.E. game series that doesn't have a One Stop Fun Shop activities game, or even a board game themed game like Pajama Sam, Freddi Fish and Putt-Putt!
Now I really wish we DID have a Spy Fox arts and crafts CD game, for coloring pages and such!
The re-release of putt putt goes to the moon, I remember having a different soundtrack than the original release
Believe it or not, Putt-Putt 4 actually has 18 different paint jobs, but the game doesn't do a very good job of explaining this. You can choose to lighten or darken the colors in Ms. Electra's shop. It's a super unique feature that unfortunately never returned.
Awesome! I can't wait to see the other retrospectives in the series.
Mr. Firebird's fireworks factory for a fun filled day
Also it took me YEARS to find the Hook in Enters the Race. For the longest time I just didn't get very far in the game because of that.
If a new a Smash game or an enhanced port of Ultimate comes out, I see Putt-Putt will be a DLC fighter.
This was a good video. Growing up I was only familiar with the MS DOS games.
Putt Putt On The Moon was my favorite one as kid.
I grew up with putt putt goes to the moon it was my childhood game and the disk got glitched so it would always stop and never let me beat it once I got the Mars hotel part and it wasn’t until I was a teen and found the game on the App Store that I ever beat it :)
I played Circus first then essentially played the other Putt-Putts backwards but not the early DOS ones.
I started off with Joins The Circus and loved playing it so much. I remember waiting for another "joins the" release as a kid from that point on, heard about there being other ones somehow but time goes quick..
Pep's Birthday Surprise is my favorite.
I always played 'putt-putt saves the zoo'.
I feel like I've played 'putt-putt travels through time' but I don't remember it.
I remember playing the joins the circus demo as a kid and thinking “wtf happened to putt-putt’s voice?!” (I only ever owned the first four games)

There's a reason why you think the graphics are blurry: witness the powerful YAGA engine. It was an engine Humongous started to use in 2002 as a replacement to the SCUMM engine which was used from the early 90's all the way through possibly 2001.
Putt-Putt Joins the Circus is so inferior to TRAVELS THROUGH TIME and ENTERS THE RACE!
So The chronological series of putt putt The purple car and pep The dog, where it All begins 😊
Putt Putt travels through the time was the absolute shit back then , anyone else agrees ?
Yes.
Oh shit, I actually remember those Clue Finder games.
Ah Yes, The One Where Mario Turned Evil who Wants to Use a Mummy To Takeover The World.
Bro I’ll still play these games Joe and again so I can help my future kids play it lol brings back great memories
I love all these old games for the computer.
This was my #1 favorite Humongous Entertainment franchise.
I wish Putt-Putt cameoed in the car movies
Would be kinda hard with the different art styles. Maybe a decal sticker?
damn now i want an entire review on the Clue Finder series.
Putt Putt Saves the Zoo! One of my favorites as a kid!
1: putt putt joins the parade, 2: putt putt goes to the Moon, 3: putt putt saves the zoo, 4: putt putt travels through time, 5: putt putt enters the race, 6: putt putt joins the circus, and 7: putt putt pep's birthday surprise. Plus: spin off putt putt games, swell.😊
Yooo Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo was my first Humongous Entertainment game!
If you give Putt-Putt lots of fuel more than once in Enters the Race, it crashes the game.
My goodness, last time I see this guy is when I went to my local library. Never got the chance to finish the games though, these are pretty much classics in my book and games to in the world of reading.
Great now when I think of Putt-Putt, I think of that Taco-Man review that he did years ago.
I second this.
I hope someone makes a spiritual successor to Putput one day. Call him Beepbeep or something.
an interesting fact in Russia is putt putt it was called beep beep
One of the cleverest jokes in the Putt-Putt series, that I DEFINITELY missed until I was an adult, was the leader of Moon City being named "Governor Moonbeam" - a reference to California Gov. Jerry Brown.
1:03:20 putt putt: are you sure you want to le-
This guy: *LEAVES ANYWAY*
I remember owning saves the zoo and goes to the moon
huchungus
also i remember playing these all the time as a kid lol, i think i had the zoo and the time travel one
Her: I bet he's cheating on me!
Me and the boys: 30:09
I could’ve sworn that peps birthday surprise was my favourite…. But I thought it was a really early game in the series… come to find out it’s really late in the series
I take it that Travels Through Time is your favorite game in this franchise both technically and from an enjoyment perspective?
Even the demo of Travels Through Time was dope
A new video! Im so hyped!
To me, the hardest Putt Putt time playtrough was Test in the future, Lunchbox in the dino area.... I only solves that recently
Well, it seems most franchises follow a bell curve when it comes to quality, honestly.
I Completely forgot about Dog on a Stick, it was the only Junior Arcade title I genuinely loved.
Maybe the parade isn't the same date each year, and is the first Saturday of a certain month, since putting it on the same date would cause it to happen on a weekday usually.
